That said, the calories in Legion Protein Bars aren’t the lowest in our lineup — in fact, they are the highest-calorie of the low-calorie bars here. The reason is the higher fat content, which is around 57% more fat compared to other bars in our lineup.

Registered dietitian Chelsea Rae Bourgeois is a fan. “I love that, in addition to the 20 grams of protein per bar, you also get 7 grams of fiber. Protein is getting a lot of well-deserved hype these days, but we can’t forget about fiber and all the good it does for our bodies. So many of us fall short of our daily fiber needs, and this one protein bar can provide a huge chunk of the recommended intake.”

And it’s not just about the fiber content. “As a dietitian, I also appreciate Legion’s transparency in their products,” Bourgeois explains. “They break down the percentages in their protein blend, telling customers just how much of each type of whey protein is in the blend.” Overall, Bourgeois gives these bars a 4 out of 5 for formulation.

And they taste good, too. “It’s chocolate-forward, and the chocolate chunks remind me of a Hershey’s Kiss,” our expert tester Ben Emminger says of the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor. “I didn’t really notice any hints of peanut butter while eating it; only hints as an aftertaste.” He notes that because the bar is so dense, it takes a bit of a workout to bite into — but it’s worth it. “Each bar is 250 calories, making it a worthwhile solution for quick breakfasts or satiety in-between my normal meals.”

Our product tester Kate Meier (a certified personal trainer and member of our BarBend editorial team) raves about the flavor, saying: “Based on taste alone, I’d eat this again! I had about 8 other people try these bars, and all 8 said they enjoyed it. That’s pretty solid.”

Meier tried the peanut butter chocolate chip flavor: “Overall, it tastes like a “healthy” peanut butter bar. The flavors are there, but not fully there, like you’d get in something loaded with fat and sugar. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 for taste.” For texture, Meier gives Bulletproof Protein Crisp Bars a 4 out of 5: “For a bar advertised as “crisp,” this is a little chewy, but in a good way.”

I also like that this bar utilizes protein from high-protein vegetables like peas and are loaded with fiber and free of added sugars. Still, the amount of protein is a bit lower than I normally strive for in a protein bar, especially given the price of $3 per bar. Fellow registered dietitian Chelsea Rae Bourgeois agrees, nothing: “These protein bars provide more calories from fat than protein. Considering these are considered a protein supplement, I would have expected more emphasis on protein.”

Meier also would have liked more protein, saying: “Just 11g of protein is a bummer; I would love to see that protein content higher.” 

This protein bar is low in net carbohydrates (the total carbohydrates minus the dietary fiber), which is the amount low-carb dieters usually focus on. Kate Meier, certified personal trainer and BarBend editorial team member, personally tested Pure Protein Bars and says: “We tried Chocolate Peanut Butter. I think these are probably the most candy-bar-like bar I’ve ever had. Texture is similar to something like a Snickers or a Milky Way — very nougaty (is that a word?). I give them a 4 out of 5.”

Meier summarizes her overall impression of Pure Protein Bars: “I’m someone who likes a bar for like three servings and then I hate the bar. But this is probably one bar I could see myself eating more often because I really like the taste, and it isn’t dry like many other bars are (RXBAR, Quest, etc.).”

As an RD myself, I prefer protein bars with natural sugar substitutes like stevia and monk fruit sweetener over sucralose when possible because of the digestive upset some people experience. In terms of sugar alcohols, they aren’t necessarily “bad” — maltitol acts as a prebiotic, meaning it feeds the healthy bacteria in your digestive tract! (4

While it’s not the lowest in calories among our lineup, the days of going solely off of calories are long gone. Instead, the higher protein and fiber content help promote satiety, which can aid in weight loss efforts. (5)

I’m a big fan of this vegan protein bar containing so much iron. Iron is a nutrient that many vegans can become deficient in, given that the most absorbable form of iron comes from animal products. (6

No Cow Protein Bars are free of added sugar and are high in protein with 20 to 22 grams of protein per bar. It’s also incredibly high in fiber, which makes its net carb count low enough to be keto-friendly for those following low-carb diets. Overall, I’d give the formulation a 4 out of 5, deducting a point for the sugar alcohol content. (Sugar alcohols can cause digestive upset such as gas and bloating in some people.) Fellow RD Chelsea Rae Bourgeois gives the same rating, saying: “These bars have a pretty impressive macros ratio, but the use of sugar alcohols may be a deal breaker for some people.”

One of our product testers Kate Meier (a certified personal trainer and a member of our BarBend editorial team) personally tested No Cow Protein Bars in the sampler packand has this to say: “Out of all of them, the Birthday Cake and the Chocolate Fudge were the best out of the variety pack among the people I shared them with. The flavors were just that — a flavoring, clearly not close to the real thing. It was suggested that I put one in the fridge, which actually did help the taste a little. It didn’t seem quite so dry. It does still leave that grainy feeling on your teeth, but I actually did eat the entire thing. It still wouldn’t be my go-to bar, but I do think that refrigerating helps!”

Registered dietitian Chelsea Rae Bourgeois likes the high fiber content (6 grams per bar), but notes that the overall formula might not be for everyone. “If you’re falling short of your protein needs and need a boost of protein between meals, 10 grams may not cut it. Plus, these bars contain added sugar and are also sweetened with sugar alcohol, which isn’t ideal for every gut.”

Overall, I’d give the formulation a 3.75 out of 5, subtracting points for the higher added sugar content given the lower protein content. I do like that the ingredients are organic and contain whole foods like almond butter and chia seeds.

What do our expert product testers have to say? They are big fans of the taste and texture, with one saying, “I had the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough flavor, and the texture really reminded me of cookie dough — that nostalgic chewiness of raw dough. Definitely 5 out of 5 from me for both taste and texture.” Another one of our first-hand testers adds, “Honestly, I didn’t expect to enjoy a vegan protein bar, but I did, quite a lot. You do get a bit of that erythritol aftertaste, but it wasn’t a bad experience by any means.”

Peloton vs. Echelon: Two Indoor Cycling Titans Square Off

Exercise bikes have undoubtedly come a long way from the model my grandma had in the corner of her basement when I was young. Not only has the functionality of bikes improved, but the best exercise bikes’ features have provided fitness enthusiasts an home gym experience they can actually enjoy. (And we all know that’s half the battle of getting a workout done.) In this article, we’re pitting two of the top contenders in the exercise bike arena against each other — Peloton vs. Echelon. 

Peloton might hold the title of being the “OG” of premium exercise bikes, but Echelon has gained steady traction in the market by offering many of the features Peloton owners have gone ga-ga over — and at a lower price point. Who will win the battle of the bikes, Peloton or Echelon? It won’t be a TKO, but we’ll help them duke out their differences so you can choose the best exercise bike for you.

What is Peloton?

Peloton had somewhat humble and slow beginnings in 2012 with its concept of combining high-quality exercise equipment with interactive cycling classes. Whether the rise of Peloton was inevitable or fueled by the pandemic is debatable, but the brand remains a household name in culture and a favorite among cyclists and fitness enthusiasts. 

The brand’s two bikes, the Peloton Bike and the Peloton Bike+, both offer a high-quality build, a large HD touchscreen, a magnetic resistance system, integrated stereo speakers, and some of the most motivating online classes known to (wo)man. While the Peloton Bike is a premium bike, the Peloton Bike+ is premium on steroids. We’ll venture into the details later, but you can also read more in our Peloton Bike review.

In addition to Peloton’s ever-so-popular bikes, they’ve extended their product lineup to include treadmills and rowing machines, although those products haven’t quite gained the same amount of traction. 

But above all else, much of Peloton’s continued success can be attributed to something that has absolutely nothing to do with the bike — the content. Peloton’s classes and instructors are top-notch, and when you combine that with the real-time leaderboard to connect and compete with others, it’s a dopamine hit like no other.

What is Echelon?

Echelon differs from Peloton in that it offers a broader range of high-quality fitness equipment at differing price points. Echelon’s cardio product lineup consists of the Stride (a treadmill), the Echelon Rower, the Echelon Ellipse (an elliptical), a stair climber, and the Echelon Reflect (a smart mirror that offers interactive fitness classes and real-time feedback).

We’ll be stacking up three Echelon Connect bikes — the Echelon EX-5, the Echelon EX-5s-22, and the Echelon EX-8s — against the Peloton bikes. As far as the motivation factor, Echelon offers a subscription service with a wide variety of live and on-demand classes. And just like Peloton, their app integrates with their equipment to enhance the workout experience. 

Echelon bikes rank are among the best types of exercise bikes we’ve tested and are a laudable Peloton alternative. They offer a quality product both in content and the products themselves but with a lower price tag than Peloton for certain models. (We’ll get to the bottom of why.)

Many of Echelon’s offerings seem similar to Peloton’s however, there are differences both in price and product.

Now that we’ve looked at the overall specs from a bird’s eye view, let’s zero in on how those specs can impact your workout — and your wallet.

Pricing

If you’re comparing prices between Echelon bikes, Peloton bikes, or some of the best Peloton alternatives, make sure you’re comparing similar models. Peloton has a reputation for being pricey, but depending on the Echelon bike, you could pay more than a Peloton bike. Take the Echelon EX-8s for example, coming in roughly $500 more than the Peloton Bike+. 

Although Echelon offers a range of bikes at different prices, I’m picking Peloton bikes as the winner on pricing. The price difference between the Echelon-EX5 and the Peloton Bike is roughly $145. In my opinion — though it might be contested — the heavier flywheel, the 100 micro-adjustable magnetic resistance levels, the warranty, and the HD touchscreen make those extra dollars worth it.

Construction and Durability 

In terms of construction and durability, Echelon bikes may take the cake. (Although it’s close.) Generally speaking, product reviews (from sources like Amazon, the Echelon website, and our testers) consistently note the heavy-duty steel frame, ease of assembly, and stability during intense workouts.

“The durability factor is an A+,” says our tester of the Echelon EX-5s. “There was no noise and I felt stable while standing in the ride position and riding at high speeds. There was some instability when I was manually shaking it to test this out, but it was easily adjusted with the floor stabilizers. The floor stabilizers are a key aspect of this machine when it comes to the smoothness of the ride.”

Peloton bike frames are constructed with a powder-coated, welded steel frame which should make anyone feel warm and cozy. However, they’ve had significant issues with the seat that resulted in a recall of 2.2 million bikes (with model number PL01). (1

But don’t let that deter you from purchasing a Peloton. Randall Colburn, BarBend editorial member, shares “I’ve had my Peloton Bike for years and think it’s an extremely well-built machine. The only issue I’ve had is an annoying creak when the bike’s been sitting in one spot on my fitness mat for too long. It’s a pain to readjust it, but it does the trick.”

The Winner: Echelon

Display and Technology

All Echelon Connect bikes and Peloton Bikes come with Bluetooth connectivity. You can put on your favorite playlist, monitor your heart rate, and integrate the best fitness trackers and health apps. The display and technology built into exercise equipment can also be a key factor in motivation.

Our expert and certified personal trainer, Amanda Capritto, says, “People who struggle to find the motivation to exercise can benefit greatly from a bike with a TV screen. Being able to watch a television show, documentary, or movie while exercising can make it something to look forward to (and make time seem like it’s flying by).”

While the Echelon EX-5 doesn’t come with a touchscreen, the EX-5s has a 22-inch screen. The Echelon EX-8s, meanwhile, boasts a curved 24” HD touchscreen. But does it matter? 

Here’s what our reviewer of the EX-8s (our pick for one of the best bikes with virtual courses) has to say: “As for the display itself, it’s quite large at 24 inches, which is bigger than the screens on the Peloton and S22i by 3.5 and 2 inches, respectively. We found the size to be cumbersome, with our tester noting that the screen wobbled slightly during rides. And while studies suggest that curved screens can be easier on the eyes than flat screens, we didn’t find it that much more immersive during our rides.” (2)

Here’s a key feature that may be a selling point for some: Echelon Connect touchscreens can rotate for off-bike workouts. This feature is only available on the Peloton Bike+, not the Peloton Bike. It’s a useful feature, since both the Peloton and Echelon apps boast on-demand strength and mobility workouts in addition to spin classes. 

In summary, if you want the rotating screen, you’ll have to fork over the extra money for the higher-end models no matter which brand you choose.

The Winner: A tie

Adjustability

Adjustability is an important factor, especially for those who are on the shorter side. Most Echelon bikes come with four-way adjustable handlebars that can make a big difference in your ride. This means you can adjust the handlebars vertically, horizontally, at an angle, and tilted, resulting in a more comfortable, ergonomic ride.

Unfortunately — and somewhat surprisingly — this feature isn’t offered on the Peloton bikes.

“I’ve commonly found exercise bikes offering horizontal settings for the handles, so I was surprised to see this option left off the Peloton Bike profile,” says our tester. “I definitely struggled to find that optimal setup at times, particularly when hopping on for a ride after my husband had just used the machine.”

The Echelon EX-5, meanwhile, received glowing reviews about its adjustable handlebars from our tester. “The grip placements might be my favorite part of the ergonomics of the bike. Not only are they comfortable with a texture making the grip easy to hold on to, there are also multiple different holds you can use while switching positions, making the ride that much more enjoyable,” they say.

Also notable in the adjustability department is the pedal design. Little costs can add up, so take note that you’ll need specific shoes for a ride on a Peloton. 

“Do not expect to hop onto this Peloton Bike with your favorite pair of cross-training shoes, as the pedals are designed for cycling-specific footwear,” reads our review of the Peloton Bike. “This does mean that in order to get the most out of your workout experience, you’ll need to pay a little extra for a pair of Delta-compatible cleats, which Peloton sells for $125.”

Echelon Connect Bikes, meanwhile, are compatible with SPD shoe clips, but also include toe cages for those who’d rather ride in their sneakers. 

And lastly, let’s talk about the bike seats. If I’m being honest, I think even good bike seats get a bad rap sometimes because indoor cycling can be just plain uncomfortable (especially if you’re new to it). Based on product reviews, our tester reviews, and the above-referenced seat recall, Peloton seats could use a little tweaking. Echelon seats, on the other hand, are built for adjustability and comfort with padding and/or ventilation. This can make a big difference on longer LISS cardio rides. 

Here’s what our tester of the Echelon EX-5 says of the seat: “The bike seat was moderately comfortable with good padding and squish. I noticed the seat was considerably more comfortable in a leaning position as opposed to an upright position. The bike seat was easy to adjust forward and back, and up and down with no problem.”

Overall, Echelon wins for adjustability with its options for adjustments, as well as the ease of making them. “I thought all of the adjustment points were easy to find,” says our tester. “The actual adjustments were smooth and easy to twist without being too tight or too loose. Compared to other bikes I’ve tried, the Echelon was one of the most user-friendly and straightforward.”

Peloton App vs. Echelon Fit: At a Glance

Peloton didn’t rise in popularity because people love staring into space while they ride on their indoor bikes. It’s fair to say that the Peloton app is the reason indoor cyclists fell in love with the brand. Let’s see how the Echelon Fit app stacks up against the Peloton app.

Peloton App vs. Echelon Fit: The Nitty-Gritty

On paper, the two apps appear to be pretty similar. Both offer hundreds of options to get your workout in and provide multiple formats to keep you motivated in your at-home workout.

Our expert, certified personal trainer Amanda Capritto, explains the motivation factor of fitness apps like the Peloton App and the Echelon Fit app: “Fitness apps help guide you to reach your goals. They can keep fitness fun and interesting, expose you to types of training you may not have thought of yourself, and at the same time, keep things simple so you don’t get distracted by all of the noise around fitness online.”

Pricing

For $12.99 a month, you can get Peloton’s basic membership, which allows access to strength, yoga, outdoor running, and HIIT workouts that don’t require a cardio machine. The App+ tier ($24 a month) also offers cycling, rowing, and treadmill workouts and more detailed metrics. Both of these tiers, however, can only be accessed via a compatible mobile device — they are not compatible with Peloton machines. 

If you own a Peloton machine, you’ll need the All-Access membership to integrate the app with the equipment. This premium membership gives access to all live and on-demand classes on the Bike, Bike+, Tread, Tread, and Row), as well as multiple user profiles, gamified workouts, and special features like detailed metrics and leaderboards. The All-Access membership costs significantly more at $44 a month but is ranked among the best fitness apps.

The Echelon Fit app’s basic membership is comparably priced at $11.99, with the premium membership costing $39.99. As with the premium Peloton membership, expanded class access, enhanced metrics and tracking, and equipment integration are all additional perks of the premium Echelon Fit membership.

The Winner: A tie

Workout and Instructor Variety

As noted above, the specs on paper seem to be pretty comparable. However, the workout and instructor variety is likely where most users will say Peloton wins — hands down.

Our Peloton bike review sums it up nicely: “While we don’t think the Peloton Bike is the greatest exercise bike on the market, the biggest reason we’d recommend this spin bike over another is the level of quality across the available live and on-demand fitness classes. Every instructor brings a unique sense of energy to the screen, and we think just about any Peloton newbie will be able to find a trainer that makes them want to tune in for a sweat session day in and day out.”

That’s not to say that the Echelon Fit app has nothing to offer. The content library has great variety, but may not have the wow factor that the Peloton classes and instructors have acquired over time.

Here’s what our tester from our Echelon EX-8s review had to say about the app and Echelon classes: “As for the Echelon Fit app, it evokes the Peloton and IFIT fitness apps with its own library of live and on-demand cardio, strength, yoga, HIIT cardio workouts, and Pilates classes. We like the app’s variety — 30-plus instructors and more than 40 daily live classes a day — and how it tracks workout metrics like speed, distance, and calories burned. We do, however, struggle with the cluttered feel of the metrics as they’re presented onscreen. In general, we find the production design and overall sense of immersion provided by the Echelon Fit app to fall short of what you’ll get from Peloton and IFIT.”

The Winner: Peloton

Gamified Workouts

Generally speaking, Peloton’s gamification features are more extensive and integrated into the overall user experience. Peloton excels in detailed leaderboards, a wide variety of badges, and lots of interactive features that encourage competition. In particular, we like Peloton’s Lanebreak, a video game where your score corresponds to your effort. While Lanebreak is only available on the Bike, the rest of Peloton’s interactive features are available on the Peloton Tread and Peloton Rower as well.

Echelon also has a gamified racing platform in Worlds, which can get your blood pumping as you try to best your high score. However, features like leaderboards, badges, and challenges aren’t as immersive and interactive for the user.

The Winner: Peloton

Live Classes and Community Features

Both apps offer live classes and community features, but most users who’ve tried them both will tell you that Peloton’s system is more elaborate and personal. Peloton excels with its clubs and special interest groups, providing more opportunities for users to join communities based on shared interests. And don’t forget those virtual high-fives.

“Peloton is all about community. In the live workouts, I love that there’s a leaderboard with everyone else from the class who you can high-five during the workouts,” says our tester. “You can also friend people so you’ll be notified if your friend is on at the same time, or you can schedule a workout together. The challenges are another huge motivator for me because I love having the little badge collection to represent my hard work.”

The Winner: Peloton

What is the difference between Echelon and Peloton?

Choosing between Peloton and Echelon will depend on your budget, preference for equipment features, and the importance of specific community and app features in your fitness routine. Both models of the Peloton bike come with a built-in HD touchscreen. Not every Echelon model does, but they do come with a lower price tag. There are also plenty of Echelon discount codes available.

Does Echelon have a monthly fee?

Interview: Brian Shaw Previews 2024 Shaw Classic & Strongest Man on Earth Contest

One year after Brian Shaw ended his competitive strongman career as the 2023 Strongest Man on Earth, he is preparing for the 2024 edition of the Shaw Classic, exclusively as a promoter.

Held in Loveland, CO, from Aug. 16-18, the 2024 Shaw Classic features Men’s Open and Women’s Open contests. Then there’s the main event: the 2024 Strongest Man on Earth competition, where sixteen of the world’s elite strongmen will vie for the title.

Shaw joined BarBend for an exclusive interview about the contest’s growth and future. Shaw also put on his analyst hat and spoke about each event.

Brian Shaw’s 2024 Shaw Classic Predictions

BarBend (BB): How does it feel prepping this contest as a promoter, not as an athlete?

Brian Shaw (BS): It’s definitely different. At this point, I don’t know how I did it last year because at this time last year, I was still very involved in setting up equipment and getting ready. It was a massive task to take on, and I’m not sure how I did it, but I did it.

This year will probably feel different once the contest gets going because I love strongman and I love competing.

BB: How do you feel about the contest’s growth in the first five years?

BS: I don’t start anything that I am not trying to become the best at. I’m very driven to do things the best I can. I think that has shown in competition in business.

Starting the Shaw Classic, now the Strongest Man on Earth at the Shaw Classic, was in my head for a long time. There are some shows where the promoters took the lion’s share of everything, and athletes were left with the leftovers, so to speak. I never agreed with that.

Last year was the fourth year. We gave the second biggest amount of prize money ever. I saw the opportunity in 2020 when nothing was happening, and I am very excited about the growth since. This started and still is a contest started by athletes for athletes.

BB: How do you feel about the contest’s future over the next five years?

BS: We will keep working. We still have a lot of growth to go through. We can strive for perfection and try to get close to that. There is always room for improvement. Every year we learn, and we get better.

Our growth is a testament to how we care for the athletes competing and fans flying in from around the world to watch this. This has been pretty much my wife, Keri, and I, along with our small team, but a lot can be done with determination and hard work. I hope it continues because we want to keep raising the bar for the sport.

BB: A portion of the pay-per-view livestream buys contribute to the prize money, giving fans a sense of investment in the contest. Will that continue?

BS: Yes, that started the very first year. We don’t have a massive bankroll behind this. We are not a big corporation. When we started this, we told the competitors that if they promoted it and helped bring more fans in to buy it, then we would increase the prize money.

When I walked in that first year and said we were bumping it up $10,000, their faces lit up. They thought I was kidding. Every year, we have been able to do that, which is incredible. The fans know that when they buy tickets or the live stream, a good portion goes to the athletes. I feel that is the right way to do it. Overall, it has been a very good thing.

BB: Events this year that differ from years past. How do you choose the events?

BS: This year, I put in a lot of events I always wanted to see in my career but never got to. With the Strongest Man on Earth last year, I was very careful not to put events that were just good for me.

I wanted to make events harder in some ways so people didn’t say that I was promoting and setting myself up to do well. I haven’t heard that, which I am proud of. I now get to put on events that I want to have, and the competitors are excited about them.

2024 Strongest Man on Earth Events

There are eight events over two days to determine the 2024 Strongest Man on Earth.

Max Raw Deadlift

The opening event of the contest is a max deadlift; no suits allowed. Lifters will be allowed basic lifting straps. Competitors call their own weights across three rounds and weights go from lightest to heaviest.

Shaw: This was another event I wanted to see in my career. There is some strategy in what weights are called. Fans will see who can deadlift the most weight without a dialed-in suit or figure-8 straps. Most people view Hafthor Björnsson as the top dog, but we could see a few 1,000-pound deadlifts.

Overhead Medley — Log Lift and Axle Press

There will be three logs and two axles. The top weights for each implement are 405 pounds for the axle and 420 pounds for the log. This is a timed event.

Shaw: The dynamic of changing from a log to an axle will be a challenge. Conditioning will also be a factor because the cleans on the axle can take a lot out of the guys. The other interesting aspect is if guys can’t finish, do they go for speed and put up the fastest times for each implement? This is a tough one to call. It will be a heck of a battle. 

Power Medley

A bailer will be converted into a wheelbarrow. Athletes will push it across the line, then transition to a tractor arm-over-arm pull. The fastest time or farthest distance determines the winner. The weights of the implements were not shared.

Shaw: This is a unique event. It will be a heck of a test of grip strength and conditioning. It will be tough to finish. It is a head-to-head event; a spectacle to watch. I think the fans will love seeing it.

Manhood Stones

The final event of the first day is the Manhood Stones. The heaviest stone weighs 600 pounds, which would be a record for competition. One rep with a heavier stone beats multiple reps with a lighter stone. If the competitor misses a heavier stone, they can attempt a lighter stone. Heaviest stone, or fastest time if weight is tied, wins.

Shaw: This was an event that I asked to have during my career. It has some strategy, but you just have to be brutally strong. It will be fascinating to see how they attack it.

Fans talked about the battle between Tom Stoltman and Hafthor Björnsson on this one. Tom claimed he would be good for reps on the 600-pound stone. I hope that happens because the roof will come off the place.

Keg Toss

Competitors will be scored for their last successful toss for height.

Shaw: This will be a shootout. We have a brand new custom keg toss set up with a net that will bring the kegs down. I believe we have five guys who can break the world record and potentially push it a decent amount. The favorites are Hafthor Björnsson, Tom Stoltman, and Mitchell Hooper, but there are others like Wesley Derwinsky and Maxime Boudreault who could shine in this event.

Squat

The squat apparatus holds weighted barrels above the athletes. The event is for reps, and athletes must touch a bottom position for reps to count. The weight was not revealed.

Shaw: This will be a fun one because we are incorporating some sports science into it. The guys will be squatting on force plates, and we can record their max force produced in each leg.

That will be part of the live stream. This has never been done before. This was our biggest project build this year.

Circus Dumbbell Overhead Medley

A second pressing medley is the penultimate event of the second day. Weights go from lightest to heaviest, and the fastest time determines the winner.

The heaviest dumbbell will be 285 pounds. This is also a head-to-head event. Shaw emphasized that extra attention will be paid to how the lift is performed.

Shaw: I think four or five guys can finish this. I am interested in seeing what type of shape Oleksii Novikov is in. Historically, he has been very good in this event.

Some other competitors have looked great too. I think Björnsson posted a 286-pound dumbbell press. A winner is tough to predict, but it will be exciting. 

Fingal’s Fingers Into Power Stairs Medley

This was also the final event in the 2023 Strongest Man on Earth contest. Athletes face off in pairs based on their placing. Whoever lifts two Fingal Fingers and completes the two Power Stairs in the quickest time wins.

Shaw: This is such a neat way to finish the contest because the guys face each other and stand atop the stairs looking out to the crowd. It will be a heck of a battle, and who knows what the storyline will be at that point.

Even if someone has a lead of a few points, I don’t know if it will be safe. They will have to really push to do well and come out on top. Tom Stoltman did very well last year. Björnsson has historically been good at both but has never done them combined. That said, he can probably do well.

Other guys to watch are Maxime Boudreault and Aivars Smaukstelis. Evan Singleton could shake it up. It is a very exciting way to finish the contest.

Inside the Decision to Continue the 2024 CrossFit Games Following Lazar Đukić’s Tragic Death

As we continue to digest what happened last Thursday when Serbian competitor Lazar Đukić died during the swim portion of Event 1 at the 2024 CrossFit Games, more and more details are coming to light.  

We are learning more about what happened that day from athletes and other eyewitnesses, both immediately after the event ended and in the ensuing hours.  

We are documenting all of this below to better understand what ultimately led to the decision to resume the 2024 CrossFit Games on Friday.

Here’s the timeline of the events that took place that day based on the facts available to us right now.

The Morning

7 a.m. CT.: Event 1 of the 2024 CrossFit Games kicks off at Marine Lake Park in Fort Worth, TX, starting with a 3.5-mile run followed by an 800-meter swim.

7:37 a.m.: Đukić is seen for the last time above the water before disappearing into the lake.

Read: Former lifeguard and 10-year affiliate owner Rudy Trevinos gave us an eyewitness account of what we saw as he watched the event from the finish line. 

7:37-8:00 a.m.: As more and more athletes cross the finish line, Đukić’s girlfriend Anja and his brother Luka, who has finished the event, grow concerned as Lazar, a former water polo player and strong swimmer, hasn’t been seen crossing the finish line.

Word starts to spread that Đukić may be missing, and his name is not on the leaderboard.

At 7:51 a.m., MCU managing editor Joe Genetin-Pilawa, who was standing on the boat ramp at the finish line, alerts the MCU team via Slack message that “Lazar is missing at the moment.”

At that point, however, people are still hoping that his chip timer just isn’t working, which was also the case for athlete Henrik Haapalainen.

8:00 a.m.: Police arrive on sight, and media and spectators are ordered to leave the area. 

At 8:25 a.m, CrossFit announces Team Event 1 has been canceled.

Shortly after that, by 8:27 a.m., CrossFit’s live feed of the competition is removed online.

8:35 a.m. (approximately): Search and rescue arrives on site and begins searching the water for Đukić.

During this time, athletes know something is wrong and are growing more concerned. Nothing has been confirmed, so for the most part, the athletes carry on as if everything is normal and start making their way back to Dickies Arena to begin their preparation for Event 2, which is set to kick off at 11 a.m.

10:30 a.m.: CBS News Texas and Morning Chalk Up staff on-site in Fort Worth, TX, report that a body has been pulled out of the Marine Creek Reservoir.

CrossFit CEO Don Faul and Director of the CrossFit Games Dave Castro appear on the local Fort Worth news station WFAA and confirm that an athlete has died. Faul says:

“CrossFit is deeply saddened by the death of one of our athletes during the swim portion of our event this morning. We’re doing everything in our power during this tragic time to support the family, to support our community. We are collaborating, working very closely, with the authorities…We have canceled the rest of today’s events and activities in the CrossFit Games, and we will continue to be focused on supporting our community and the family through this tragic set of circumstances.” 

The Afternoon

1:32 p.m.: Athletes receive an email from CrossFit letting them know that there will be an optional meeting at 4 p.m. at Dickies Arena to “discuss our path forward.”

4 p.m.: Athletes and coaches arrive at Dickies Arena, where Castro initiates the conversation. He quickly tells the group that he has spoken to both Luka and Anja and that they both have effectively given their blessing, or their permission, so to speak, for the CrossFit Games to continue.

Emily Rolfe, who went on to compete and place third overall, recounts the moment.

“I observed Dave prior to speaking to the athletes. He appeared to be struggling to contain his emotions and was clearly distraught. He was trying to put on a brave face, but had a hard time speaking,” Rolfe remembers.

At first, she said, nobody really said anything. But then the silence was broken, as people started to fire questions at Castro, asking them why there weren’t more lifeguards on the lake, among other concerns.

Some athletes, including last year’s champion Laura Horvath, leave the meeting.

“Dave then realized the athletes were not happy with what had been suggested, and it was decided we break into small groups. We broke into these mini ‘pow wow’ groups, and the idea was that, as a group, we needed to come to a consensus,” Rolfe says. 

A consensus, however, was impossible. 

Rolfe explains there were essentially three polarizing options:

1. Carry on with the CrossFit Games on Friday.

2. Cancel the Games entirely.

3. Continue with the Games, but only as an exhibition. No leaderboard. And split the prize money, donating some to the Đukić family.

“Nothing was really getting solved,” Rolfe remembers, adding that it felt like “an impossible situation.”

With no consensus, the next plan of attack is to select five individual women, five individual males, five team athletes, and five coaches to act as representatives of their group and continue the conversation.

It’s also decided that CrossFit will send out a survey to the athletes and poll them anonymously about their opinion as to what the final decision should be.

Some athletes begin nominating other athletes, while others volunteer themselves. In the end, the representatives are chosen.

Women: Danielle Brandon, Haley Adams, Victoria Campos, Emily Rolfe, and Alex Gazan

Men: Jayson Hopper, Saxon Panchik, Brent Fikowski, Cole Sager, and Jay Crouch

Teams: Royce Dunn, Elliot Simmonds, Khan Porter, Jessi Smith, and Noah Ohlsen

Coaches: Jami Tikkanen, Caroline Lambray, Adam Neiffer, Joakim Rygh, and Facundo Etchecolatz

The Evening

7 p.m.: The survey to athletes is sent out, and they’re told they must reply by 8:30 p.m.

It was not sent in the form of a traditional email, so Rolfe no longer has access to the questions verbatim. She says there were just a few questions, the first one being:

Are you planning on competing this weekend as of now? Yes? No? I’m not sure.

A second question was: If you are planning on competing, are you comfortable with the competition starting at noon, shortly after the tribute for Đukić, or do you want to start later in the afternoon?

“There were one or two more questions, but I don’t recall the exact nature of them,” Rolfe says, adding that the main thing was about whether or not the athlete wanted to compete.

Also, during this time, the 20 representatives reconvene in a room upstairs in Dickies Arena to continue the conversation.

The meeting begins with Chief Brand Officer Nicolle Carroll making a short speech.

Approximately 8:30 p.m.: The survey results are in, and Castro opens his laptop and reports the result to the athlete and coach reps: 78 percent of athletes say they will compete.

9:09 p.m.: The CrossFit Games sends out an email to the athletes saying “The 2024 CrossFit Games will continue tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. with a tribute honoring Lazar. Gates to the venue will be opening at 9 a.m. Competition will begin with Teams at 11 a.m. and Individuals at 12:20 pm.”

The Most Important Thing To Do After a Knee Injury (From an Expert)

Injuries, be they small or serious, happen to just about everybody. For super-jacked rehab specialist Jordan Shallow, rehab starts on day one.

“The real danger in the rehabilitation process is losing your fitness,” Shallow said while outlining his protocol to bounce back from a minor accident that led to a not-so-minor knee injury.

The operative word Dr. Shallow (DC) used to describe the state of his meniscus was “shredded.” But there’s no bed rest for the wicked. If you want to bounce back from an injury, you might want to pay heed to what Dr. Shallow is doing in his first two weeks.

What To Do After a Knee Injury

As Shallow tells it, in early August, he stepped off a curb and, by unhappy chance, severely injured his meniscus. “A few weeks ago I shredded my right meniscus slipping on the sidewalk,” Shallow said on social media on Aug. 14, 2024.

“Since then, I’ve had my rehab hat on.” Here’s what Dr. Shallow is doing immediately after his meniscus injury to help speed up recovery:

Passive Movement

“You literally can’t sleep on rehab,” Shallow noted while endorsing moderate amounts of unloaded movement; passive flexion and extension of the knee, “…early and often. The days of ‘R.I.C.E.’ are long gone.”

A 2020 literature review argued that the “rest, ice, compression, elevation” protocol is antiquated and, in some cases, may even slow down recovery due to limiting blood flow as well as the production of helpful hormones. (1)

Passive movement could entail activities like yoga or swimming, bending and straightening the knee while clasping your thigh, or something as simple as walking.

Walking

Shallow noted that he has been “walking…a lot” immediately following his knee injury. Walking is considered passive movement and, provided it does not cause or significantly worsen pain, can be a great way to restore confidence while also aiding recovery.

A 2018 study argued that continuing with a workout routine after injury can help provide structure to your health habits and maintain a positive outlook. (2)

Getting your steps in will also help you maintain your general physical activity levels instead of resorting to sedentary behaviors while injured.

Exercise (to Tolerance)

“A couple days after my injury, I limped to the gym,” Shallow said. Not so he could wear a badge of honor or brag about how tough he is — training and rehabilitation are simply closer cousins than most people think.

“I pushed my threshold for comfort on the injured leg and then trained my ‘healthy leg’ to failure,” Shallow continued. “In the next week or so, I should be back to where I was pre-injury without losing any strength.”

As long as you don’t overdo it, studies do show that continuing to train the injured area can speed up recovery. (3)

Other Voices: “Exercise increases blood flow, helping to shuttle inflammatory chemicals and waste products,” says Dr. Zachary Long, DPT and owner of The Barbell Physio. “Physical activity also releases endorphins, which have a pain-relieving effect all their own.”

Your First Move

What’s the common thread here? Taking an active role in your own rehabilitation, rather than letting time do all the work. Contemporary best practices for injury rehab align with the old adage; motion is lotion.

Before you pack up your gym bag, remember that all injuries are different, and what works for Dr. Shallow may not be relevant for you. Your best bet is to consult with a qualified physician instead of trying to mend an injury yourself.

Still, it’s helpful to see how the pros tackle things. For Dr. Shallow, falling off a curb is just a speed bump.

In his latest video, fitness expert Jeff Nippard dives into a question that’s been on the minds of many gym-goers: Does having more muscle make you more attractive? 

To get to the bottom of this, Jeff surveyed 50,000 people, asking them about their preferences, perceptions, and romantic experiences related to muscularity. 

The results were surprising and offer a fresh perspective on whether those hours spent lifting weights really translate into more success in the dating world. 

Let’s explore what the data reveals about the true impact of muscle mass on romantic attraction.

Survey Insights: Do Muscles Really Equal More Dates?

To explore the connection between muscularity and romantic success, 50,000 people were asked whether strength and muscle mass correlate with attracting more partners. 

The results were revealing: men with greater bench press strength generally reported having more intimate partners. This trend wasn’t just limited to men—stronger women also experienced a higher partner count.

However, the data showed that having a stronger bench press wasn’t the only factor at play. 

The survey highlighted that while strength can give you a leg up, it’s not the sole predictor of romantic success. Many participants with lower bench press numbers still reported thriving romantic lives. 

This suggests that while being strong might improve your chances, there’s more to the story than just lifting heavy weights.

The Role of Muscularity in Attractiveness

While the survey confirmed that strength could boost romantic success, the relationship between muscularity and attractiveness is more complex. 

When participants were asked to choose the most attractive body type from a range of physiques, the results were surprising.

 The majority of women preferred men with moderate muscle mass—specifically, Level 3 on a five-point scale. 

This physique strikes a balance between being fit and not overly muscular, suggesting that most women find a middle-ground body type more appealing.

Interestingly, many men set their sights on achieving higher levels of muscularity—Level 4 or even Level 5—despite this not aligning with what most women find attractive. 

This discrepancy indicates that while muscle can indeed be attractive, there’s no need to aim for extreme levels of muscularity to impress. In fact, a well-toned but not overly bulky physique may be the sweet spot for those looking to boost their appeal.

Specific Body Parts and Attractiveness

The survey and study results discussed primarily focused on overall muscularity, strength levels, and body types rather than breaking down attractiveness by specific muscle groups. 

However, other studies and general fitness research have provided insights into which muscle groups may contribute more to perceived attractiveness. 

Here’s a breakdown of how certain muscle groups are often viewed in terms of attractiveness and their impact on romantic success:

Shoulders and Chest

Significance: Broad shoulders and a well-developed chest are often seen as markers of masculinity and strength. These areas create a V-tapered physique, which many studies suggest is a desirable trait for men.

Impact: A strong upper body, particularly the chest and shoulders, contributes significantly to the overall perception of strength. Men with broader shoulders and a defined chest are often perceived as more dominant, which can be attractive in a romantic context.

Arms

Significance: Well-defined biceps and triceps are commonly associated with fitness and strength. Visible arm muscles are often one of the most noticeable indicators of a man’s overall fitness level.

Impact: Strong arms are not only a symbol of strength but also of protection and capability. This can subtly influence perceptions of attractiveness, especially when coupled with other well-developed muscle groups.

Back

Significance: A well-developed back, particularly the lats (latissimus dorsi), enhances the V-taper and contributes to a powerful, athletic look.

Impact: While less visible than other muscle groups, a strong back is crucial for creating the overall silhouette that many find attractive. It also complements other muscle groups, enhancing the overall physique.

Abs

Significance: A six-pack or defined abs are often seen as the pinnacle of fitness and health. While they are visually appealing, their impact on long-term attractiveness is more nuanced.

Impact: Despite the popular belief that a six-pack is necessary for attraction, the survey indicated that abs don’t significantly impact the number of partners or relationship satisfaction. Abs are more about aesthetics than long-term attraction, where personality and other traits matter more.

Legs

Significance: Strong, muscular legs (quads, hamstrings, and calves) contribute to overall athleticism and balance in the physique.

Impact: While legs are often overlooked in casual assessments of attractiveness, they play a crucial role in overall fitness. Strong legs indicate a balanced approach to fitness, which can be subtly appealing.

Glutes

Significance: Strong glutes are often associated with power and athleticism. For both men and women, well-developed glutes can enhance physical attractiveness.

Impact: While glutes are often more emphasized in women’s fitness, they contribute to an overall balanced and powerful physique in men, making them an important muscle group for holistic attractiveness.

The Influence of Body Fat on Romantic Success

While muscle mass plays a role in attraction, body fat adds another layer of complexity. The survey explored whether having a lean physique or carrying more body fat affected romantic success. 

Surprisingly, the results showed that body fat levels had little to no impact on the number of intimate partners a person had. Whether participants were shredded with a six-pack or carried a bit more weight, their partner count remained relatively consistent.

However, when it came to romantic satisfaction—how happy people were with their love lives—a different story emerged. 

Those with higher body fat levels reported lower satisfaction in their relationships. This trend was true for both men and women, indicating that while body fat might not affect how many partners you have, it can influence how content you feel in your romantic life. 

The takeaway? While maintaining a healthy body composition is important, it’s more about how you feel in your own skin than achieving a specific look.

Beyond Muscle: The True Determinants of Long-Term Attraction

While muscle and strength can boost your appeal, they’re only part of the equation when it comes to long-term romantic success. 

The survey data, alongside existing research, highlights that non-physical traits often play a more significant role in maintaining a healthy relationship. 

Qualities like kindness, intelligence, and confidence consistently outrank physical attributes when it comes to what people value in a partner.

Interestingly, the notion of the “nice guy” being less desirable is a myth. Studies show that kindness is actually one of the most attractive traits a person can possess. 

In fact, when comparing “nice guys” to those who are more self-centered, only 7% of women preferred the latter. 

Even when the so-called “jerk” was more physically attractive, he still fell short in desirability compared to a kinder counterpart.

So, while working on your physique is beneficial, focusing on personal development—like being kind, setting goals, and building self-confidence—is equally, if not more, important for securing and maintaining a happy, long-term relationship.

Conclusion

The quest for the perfect body might drive many to the gym, but when it comes to attracting and keeping a partner, the data suggests that a balanced approach is key. 

Building muscle can certainly enhance your appeal and improve your chances in the dating world, but the pursuit of extreme muscularity isn’t necessary—or even preferred by most. 

Women tend to favor moderate muscle mass over a highly bulked-up physique, and body fat levels don’t play a significant role in determining how many partners you might have.

Ultimately, long-term romantic success hinges more on who you are than on how you look. 

Qualities like kindness, intelligence, and confidence are what truly count when it comes to forming deep, meaningful connections. So, while staying fit and strong is a worthwhile goal, remember that developing your character and treating others well are just as crucial for a fulfilling love life.

In the end, becoming the best version of yourself—both inside and out—will make you far more attractive than any amount of muscle ever could.

Sadik Hadzovic Is Going Back to Classic Physique; Shares Why Men’s Physique Didn’t Work

American IFBB Pro bodybuilder Sadik Hadzovic’s most recent Olympia appearance was in 2017 when he ranked seventh in Classic Physique. Although Hadzovic qualified for the Men’s Physique Olympia in 2022, he withdrew a few weeks before the contest. 

Following a year-long hiatus from competition, Hadzovic returned to the stage, aiming to qualify for the 2024 Olympia. However, his sixth- and fifth-place finishes at the 2024 Chicago Pro and 2024 Tampa Pro, respectively, did not garner him an Olympia qualification. 

On Aug. 9, 2024, Hadzovic announced that he would return to the Classic Physique division. He attributed the move to the limitations imposed by the weight cap in the Men’s Physique division. Check it out below:

The IFBB Pro League introduced weight caps for the Men’s Physique division after the 2023 Olympia, setting them 10 pounds lower than those in the Classic Physique division for corresponding heights. The rationale behind the weight restrictions was to ensure that Men’s Physique athletes don’t appear bigger than the Classic Physique competitors. 

The Classic Physique division was introduced as a middle ground between Men’s Physique and Men’s Open bodybuilding. Although the new regulations established a clear distinction between Men’s Physique and Classic Physique competitors, they hindered Hadzovic.

“The things I learned during these past two shows is that the weight cap for Men’s Physique is pretty difficult to make,” Hadzovic admitted, believing the Classic Physique division’s 219-pound weight cap for his height is where he would look his best. 

Hadzovic gained 13 pounds in a week following the 2024 Tampa Pro — two pounds lighter than where he feels he looks his most aesthetic.

Sadik Hadzovic’s Competitive Bodybuilding Career

Per NPC News Online, Hadzovic earned his IFBB Pro card in the Men’s Physique division in 2012 and competed there until the introduction of the Classic Physique division in 2016. He won the bronze medal at the inaugural Classic Physique Olympia but switched to the Men’s Physique division in 2019.

National Fitness Chain Files For Bankruptcy: Plans to Close 10% of Locations Amid Financial Struggles

Gym chain seeks to restructure debt and optimize operations after pandemic-induced financial distress

A popular budget-friendly gym chain owned by Equinox Fitness, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The filing, made in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, aims to restructure the company’s debt after financial difficulties stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

As part of the restructuring, Blink Fitness will close approximately 10% of its over 100 locations, with most closures affecting gyms outside the New York City metro area.

The fitness industry has never fully recovered from the pandemic’s impact.

According to the Health & Fitness Association, 25% of gyms in the United States were forced to close permanently due to the lockdowns and other restrictions.

Blink Fitness was no exception, suffering significant revenue losses during the pandemic when all its locations were temporarily shut down for nine months. The loss of membership revenue during this period created lasting financial challenges for the company.

In its bankruptcy filing, Blink Fitness cited “liquidity constraints” and a backlog of rent payments as significant factors contributing to its financial distress.

Additionally, the company has been struggling with underperforming locations, which have negatively affected profitability over the past year. The bankruptcy petition listed between $100 million and $500 million in both assets and liabilities, including $280 million in debt.

To maintain operations during the restructuring process, Blink Fitness secured $21 million in debtor-in-possession financing from its existing lenders.

CEO Guy Harkless emphasized that the Chapter 11 filing was a necessary step to optimize the company’s footprint and ensure its long-term success.

“After evaluating our options, the Board and management team determined that using the court-supervised process to optimize the Company’s footprint and effectuate a sale of the business is the best path forward for Blink and will help ensure Blink remains the destination for all people seeking an inclusive, community-focused gym,” Harkless said in a press release.

As part of the restructuring plan, Blink Fitness will close about 10% of its gyms, focusing on those that are non-core to its operations and primarily located outside of its core New York City market.

Despite these closures, Blink Fitness assured its members that their gym experience would not be impacted and that the company is taking steps to minimize the effect on employees and members.

In an email to members, the gym reiterated its commitment to continue operating as usual, prioritizing the needs of its members and communities.

Despite the financial challenges, Blink Fitness has seen positive momentum in recent years. The company reported a nearly 40% increase in revenue over the past two years, a sign of its resilience in the face of adversity.

Looking ahead, Blink Fitness remains focused on its strategic initiatives, including reinvigorating its most popular locations, enhancing member experience, and strengthening its community connections.

As Blink Fitness navigates the bankruptcy process, the company aims to emerge stronger and more resilient, continuing its mission to democratize fitness for all.
