Fitness Certifications: How to Maximize the Return on Investment

Learn how and why to choose, leverage and continually benefit from making the choice to become certified.

In an industry as competitive as personal training, standing out means not just being good at what you do, but being the best. One pathway to achieving this status is through continued education and certification.

However, with the plethora of fitness certifications available, personal trainers may wonder: What is the return on investment (ROI), and how can I maximize it?

The Value of Fitness Certifications

At first glance, the investment in fitness certifications might seem steep. Costs can range dramatically, depending on the program’s prestige, scope and included resources. However, the value derived from obtaining these certifications goes beyond the initial expense.

Reena Vokoun, ACE-certified fitness professional, founder and CEO, Passion Fit, San Diego, says that obtaining a certification from a reputable organization is “extremely valuable and highly encouraged in order to maximize your earnings and ROI.”

“Investing in a solid education will earn you credibility and respect in the industry,” Vokoun says. “As a result, you’ll be empowered to set your fees at or above the industry average. And if you want to work for another company, you’ll be in a favorable position to negotiate for higher pay.”

Certifications serve as a badge of expertise and dedication. They signal to potential clients and employers that you are committed to your profession and possess up-to-date knowledge. This credibility is invaluable in attracting people willing to pay premium rates for high quality training.

Ami McMullen, TRX Master Instructor and owner, Studio Hustle, Louisville, KY, says that after nearly 20 years in the fitness industry, the ones who stay curious and keep learning are the ones who are most successful.

“As a fitness professional starting out in 2005, I couldn’t get hired anywhere in San Diego without a certification, and now, as a fitness studio owner myself, I don’t hire anyone without one,” McMullen says.

“Not only does a certification ensure that a person knows the minimum, someone who is willing to invest the money for their materials and their time to study for the exam is going to perform well at their job, and ultimately benefit the business.”

Maximizing ROI on Fitness Certifications

To ensure you’re getting the most out of your investment in fitness certifications, consider the following:

Choose Wisely

Research and choose certifications that are not only reputable but also align with your career goals and interests. Look for certifications that are accredited, have a track record of success and support, and provide ongoing resources as your career progresses.

Leverage Your Network

Use your certification as a networking tool. Participate in related workshops, seminars and online forums. Engaging with the community can open opportunities for collaborations, client referrals and insights into market demands.

Market Your Skills

Update your website, social media profiles and business cards to highlight your certifications. Articulate how your specialized skills can benefit potential clients, focusing on the unique results you can deliver.

Continuous Learning

View each certification not as an end goal but as a stepping stone. The fitness industry is constantly evolving, so staying informed and continually updating your qualifications can keep you relevant and in demand.

“Fitness is evolving rapidly, with new scientific discoveries emerging daily,” says Tricia Murphy Madden, co-founder of Fit Pro Programming, Seattle.

“By maintaining a certification, fitness professionals commit to ongoing education, typically on a yearly or bi-yearly basis,” she says. “Without continuing education, I might still be instructing with outdated methods, while wearing a thong over my tights and shouting ‘kick higher.’”

Calculating the ROI of Fitness Certifications

While the cost side of the ROI equation is usually straightforward, quantifying the benefits to accurately calculate the ROI requires a more nuanced approach.

Quantifying the benefits of fitness certifications involves looking at both immediate gains and long-term growth. Here’s how to approach this step:

Increased Earnings: One of the most direct benefits is the ability to charge higher rates due to your enhanced qualifications. Estimate how much more per session you can charge and multiply this by the number of sessions you conduct annually.

Employment Opportunities: Certifications can open doors to positions that specifically require such credentials, often at a higher salary bracket. Compare the average salaries for certified versus non-certified trainers to gauge this benefit.

Client Acquisition and Retention: With advanced credentials, your marketability increases, attracting more clients and, importantly, retaining them. This can be measured by calculating the increase in your client base and the improved retention rate after obtaining your certification.

Networking Opportunities: The connections made through certification courses and associated events can lead to partnerships, referrals and other opportunities. While harder to quantify, estimate the monetary value of these opportunities based on past experiences or industry standards.

Skills and Knowledge: The intrinsic value of the knowledge gained and its application in training sessions can lead to better client outcomes, testimonials and referrals. Assign a value to this based on the potential increase in business and client satisfaction.

To calculate the ROI for fitness certifications, add up all the financial benefits you expect to gain, outlined above. Once you have the total sum of these benefits, subtract the initial cost of obtaining your certification. This difference gives you the net benefits – essentially, what you’ve gained financially after covering your initial investment.

Then divide these net benefits by the original cost of the certification. This shows you what fraction of the cost you’ve gained back as benefits. To express this as a percentage, which is how ROI is typically presented, multiply that fraction by 100.

For example, if the total financial benefits you’ve calculated amount to $8,000, and your certification cost $1,000, your net benefits are $7,000 ($8,000 in total benefits minus the $1,000 cost). Dividing $7,000 by the $1,000 cost gives you 7. Multiplying by 100 to convert this into a percentage, your ROI is 700%.

This means you’ve gained back seven times the amount of your original investment, highlighting the substantial value of pursuing fitness certifications.

This calculation shows a substantial return. Keep in mind, however, that the exact numbers will vary for each individual and situation. The key is to carefully consider and conservatively estimate each component to ensure an accurate and meaningful ROI calculation.

Know Your Worth

The path to becoming certified is a strategic investment that can yield big returns. By selecting certifications that align with market needs and personal passions, and committing to ongoing education, personal trainers can ensure that their investment pays off, securing a competitive edge.

Murphy Madden points out that, with the “rapid rise of the Ozempic revolution,” certified fitness professionals have a chance to offer significant value to clients and potentially collaborate with medical professionals.

“This opens up doors to finally earn a living through teaching and training,” she says. “Holding a nationally accredited certification holds greater significance than ever before.

“The industry is evolving, increasingly intersecting with healthcare, medicine and wellness sectors. As we move forward, the wellness community will increasingly rely on fitness professionals to offer invaluable contributions beyond just medical expertise.”

Study Challenges Traditional Strength Training Wisdom

Florida Atlantic University’s latest findings suggest that training closer to failure might be essential for muscle growth but may not be as critical for strength gains

Is training to failure the secret to bigger muscles, or could stopping a few reps short of failure yield the same results? This question is at the heart of a new study from Florida Atlantic University, which uncovers surprising insights into how close to failure you really need to train to maximize muscle growth and strength.

Published in the journal Sports Medicine, the research is the first of its kind to conduct a meta-analysis exploring the relationship between training to failure and its effects on muscle strength and hypertrophy. This study provides actionable data that fitness professionals can apply to enhance client training programs.

Study Details: Analyzing the Impact of Training to Failure

The researchers conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of 55 studies that focused on how different levels of proximity to failure—measured as repetitions in reserve (RIR)—affect muscle strength and hypertrophy. Repetitions in reserve refer to the number of additional reps an individual could perform before reaching the point of muscle failure, where they can no longer complete a repetition.

The analysis aimed to determine whether training closer to failure yields better results in terms of muscle size and strength. The researchers scrutinized the impact of varying RIR levels on key muscle groups engaged in specific exercises, such as the quadriceps during leg presses.

credit: Nike

Key Findings: Muscle Growth vs. Strength

The study uncovered that training closer to failure significantly impacts muscle hypertrophy. The closer an individual trains to failure, the more substantial the muscle growth observed. Conversely, the research found that the effect on muscle strength was not as pronounced. Whether an individual stops several reps short of failure or pushes to the brink, strength improvements appeared similar across the board.

Michael C. Zourdos, PhD, the senior author of the study and professor and chair of the Department of Exercise Science and Health Promotion at FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, emphasized the importance of these findings.

“If you’re aiming for muscle growth, training closer to failure might be more effective. In other words, it doesn’t matter if you adjust training volume by changing sets or reps; the relationship between how close you train to failure and muscle growth remains the same,” said Zourdos.

“For strength, how close you push to failure doesn’t seem to matter as much.”

Practical Applications for Fitness Professionals

Based on the study’s findings, fitness professionals can design programs that optimize muscle growth by encouraging clients to train closer to failure. Specifically, guiding clients to work within a range of 0-5 reps short of failure may maximize hypertrophy while minimizing injury risks. For clients focused on building strength, programs can prioritize heavier loads while stopping 3-5 reps short of failure, avoiding unnecessary physical strain without compromising strength gains.

The study also found that training closer to failure enhances the accuracy of self-reported repetitions in reserve.

“When people estimate how many reps they have left, this perception influences the weights they choose,” explained Zac P. Robinson, PhD, the study’s first author.

“If the estimation is off, they might use lighter weights than needed, which could limit strength gains. On the flip side, our meta-analysis shows that training closer to failure also leads to greater muscle growth.” This suggests that accurate load selection, informed by close-to-failure training, can help clients achieve better outcomes in both strength and hypertrophy.

The research indicates that performing sets closer to failure can mimic the conditions of maximal strength tests, aligning with the principle of specificity. Zourdos highlighted this, stating, “As the load increases, motor patterns change, which means performing sets closer to failure can more closely mimic the demands of max strength assessments.”

Fitness professionals can use this approach to better prepare clients for strength testing and performance scenarios, ensuring they are both mentally and physically ready to meet these challenges.

credit: Echelon

Challenges and Considerations

While training closer to failure may enhance muscle growth and improve the accuracy of self-assessments, the researchers also caution against the potential downsides. Training to failure can be physically demanding and may hinder long-term performance due to increased recovery needs.

This aspect of the study may resonate with the ongoing debate within the fitness community about the best approach to resistance training. Some trainers advocate for pushing to failure to maximize results, while others emphasize the risks of overtraining and the importance of recovery.

While this study provides valuable guidelines for optimizing training programs, the researchers note that the precise relationship between training to failure and strength gains remains ambiguous. Zourdos and his team advocate for future studies with larger sample sizes to further explore these effects and refine training recommendations.

AI-Powered Retention Strategies for Gym Owners

Zen Planner is turning the tide on gym member retention by providing personalized communication and strategic touchpoints during critical membership phases

For 10 years, Michael Wuest successfully managed a CrossFit gym in Columbia, Missouri. Despite generating 50-100 new leads per month, he faced a stark realization about retention in his first year: 50% of his membership base churned, predominantly around the six-week mark.

This alarming trend prompted a deeper investigation into the customer experience. Wuest discovered that the primary reason for member departure was the overly busy classes, which led to inadequate individual attention and a disconnected experience. To address this, he focused on the critical first 100 days of membership, identifying key communication needs to enhance personal engagement.

He found that 30% of departing members felt neglected in the bustling environment. He designed a framework for the first 100 days, mapping out the customer journey to identify key interaction opportunities supported by strategic touchpoints via email and SMS. He created feedback loops, prompting member check-ins at the 2-week, 30-day, 6-week, 60-day and 90-day marks.

These comprehensive measures significantly improved member retention by seamlessly integrating new members into the gym community and ensuring a consistent and personalized client experience throughout their journey.

Being Solution-Oriented

For a CrossFit owner or any gym owner or operator retention is the castle, and the right type of deeply customized communication at the right time is the key.

The issue then becomes time. What CrossFit owner or yoga studio operator has the bandwidth to maintain highly personalized strategically-timed communication with every member? 24/7?

Enter artificial intelligence (AI).

Wuest set out to develop a solution, and 4 years later, co-founded UpLaunch, a marketing automation and CRM platform that utilizes AI for personalized communication, marketing campaigns, and more.

Using UpLaunch, his retention rates jumped to 90%. UpLaunch – now called Zen Planner – grew to $1.5MM annual recurring revenue (ARR) and was acquired by Daxko in January 2020 with Wuest becoming the vice president of marketing for the SMB Division.

Wuest says that given his past, he is determined to help gyms win at the retention game, and he believes AI is a key component to making that happen.

Michael Wuest, VP of Marketing, SMB

Creating Stickiness

“AI can be used in so many ways, and can act like an owner or operator’s right-hand man, picking up much of the work that goes into communication, marketing, follow up and more so gym owners can be on the floor – where they want to be – working with members,” he says.

He points to the critical first 100 days of membership previously mentioned.

“When I realized the impact of the right communication and touch points in those first 3 months, I saw a huge opportunity to transform new members into brand ambassadors rather than losing them.”

Wuest touches on the psychology involved in the onboarding process, and how critical it is to be supportive.

“Anyone joining a new gym typically has a little anxiety,” he says. There are thoughts of ‘Am I fit enough?’ “Do I view myself as a CrossFitter or a student of the Dojo?” These individuals are vulnerable, but they joined the gym for a reason. If you keep fueling that fire, you can turn it into an inferno.”

Wuest created a way to communicate and share information that makes it easy for fitness business owners to understand and use. It is Zen Planner’s Engage feature, and it meets each new member where he or she is and cultivates them with highly personalized content at just the right pace and cadence.

“This playbook helps gyms virtually walk alongside members, orienting them, checking in, and more,” he says. “After 6 weeks, once members have found their footing, we prompt them to write a social media review, solidifying their membership mentally and publicly while promoting the gym. It continues from there.”

Clearly, once a member moves past their first 100 days, retention measures don’t stop. Wuest says AI gives gyms the power to execute highly personalized life cycle marketing campaigns that continue strategically throughout each membership.

“It’s important to remain in lockstep with members even when they aren’t in the gym, and AI can do this by delivering customized content, check-ins and more,” said Wuest.

AI Assistant

Wuest says AI is a valuable asset that provides operators and owners with continuous, critical feedback on each member’s experience, allowing for refinements and enhanced retention rates.

“AI can monitor a member’s attendance consistency, results, engagement in different areas, and more,” he says. “If a member’s attendance drops, AI can alert the owner or operator and even handle communication to get that member back. It’s a built-in trigger.”

AI-powered chatbots are another valuable tool for gyms.

“Bots can handle typical Q&A, answer questions about the gym, membership packages, pricing, and more, and identify leads, placing them into the sales funnel immediately.”

Wuest sees great value in this for both gym owners and prospects.

“The name of the game is speed to lead,” he says. “The faster a prospect’s questions are answered, the better. Often, these questions come in late at night. It’s impossible for a gym owner to respond 24/7, but a bot can.”

Bonus: The bot also compiles the types of questions they receive so the owner can address pain points in their marketing.

Digging into the Data

Gyms have long used CRM tools and software to gather data on their members. That’s marketing 101. Now, gyms can use AI to act on that data, eliminating time spent pouring over reports.

“AI can build predictable models to determine when someone may be considering canceling their membership, versus an owner or staff member mining the attendance data and guessing when a member might be on his or her way out.”

Beyond retention, this ability can translate to upselling.

“These predictability models can help gym owners identify which members might be ripe for PT, or other services the gym offers.”

The Virtual Road Ahead

So what does the future of the fitness industry look like, with AI?

“AI will continue to unlock more tools for gyms to build profitable businesses,” Wuest says. “It will save owners an immeasurable amount of time while helping to foster deeper, more personal relationships between members, the staff and the gym.”

He also says AI can feed into other marketing resources for significantly better results and efficiencies.

“Systems like Zen Planner can be integrated with paid media for deeply-targeted prospecting – reducing costs and delivering superior results,” he says.

In the end, Wuest holds true to his passion and mission to help gyms win.

“I have lived the life of a gym owner and it’s not easy. Not by a longshot. So we use technology and AI now to make gyms more profitable, buy back time for owners and operators and help them to live a better life. That’s been my mission for many years.”

2024 CrossFit Games Event 9 & 10 Results: Champions are Crowned

The individual athletes take the floor for their final events at the 2024 CrossFit Games

There are 200 points up for grabs, as the final workout is a two-parter.

While Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr’s coronation is once again locked, only 69 points separate sixth place and first place on the men’s side, so it is anyone’s championship to win.

Final Results Event 9

Final Results Event 10

Recap

Women’s Division

This event seemed eerily like a harder version of Fran, which we know is every CrossFit athlete’s favorite.

In the first heat, Kyra Milligan took an early lead.

Milligan moved the yoke with ease, showing off her strength. She won part one in the first heat.

The women enjoyed a two-minute rest after the five-minute cap, and during that time they prepared themselves for a heavier barbell and yoke.

The barbell weight of Event 10 caused the women to move slower as they headed into the more complicated gymnastics.

Chloe Gauvin-David made her move on the second set of bar muscle-ups, going unbroken and managed to hold off a surging Lexi Neely.

The second heat was full of women who were only around 15 points away from a top-10 finish.

The women came out quickly and Gracie Walton and Claudia Gluck got to the pull-up bar first.

Madeline Sturt poured on the gas, but a moment too late and Gluck won the heat in Event 9.

[Related: Best Bodyweight Exercises]

Claudia Gluck held on to her barbell to start the thrusters in Event 10, where most of the other women dropped between sets.

The fight continued between Gluck, Sturt, and Alex Gazan through the final thrusters as Gluck came out victorious with back-to-back heat wins.

The final women’s heat took place, and although Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr had first place locked up, the finishes were unclear after that. Alexis Raptis and Toomey-Orr raced neck and neck during the first event, and Raptis grabbed the heat and event win.

Migała was not far behind but got called back by her judge to finish her thrusters.

Rookie Aimee Cringle was last to finish, and the horn was blown prematurely, minutes ahead of the time cap, causing her to stop moving. She was able to finish the workout but lost precious seconds. Expect an appeal.

Event 10 began, and Migała took the early lead but was caught by Toomey-Orr on the first yoke.

Toomey-Orr continued with her lead for the rest of the event and finished with an event win.

Raptis came in just after Toomey, getting second place in the event.

Toomey-Orr won her seventh CrossFit Games title and became the Fittest on Earth, and perhaps ever.

Men’s Division

The first men’s heat looked like they were shot out of a cannon on the first set of thrusters.

Bayley Martin and rookie Jack Rozema jockeyed back and forth to start. Four men got to the second set of thrusters at approximately the same time.

Aniol Ekai snuck by everyone and grabbed the heat win, with Martin and Rozema to follow.

Ekai took his Event 9 finish and used it to start Event 10 strong. Harry Lightfoot caught him on the second set of bar muscle-ups.

Cole Sager tried to catch Ekai at the end in classic Sager form, but Ekai held on and went two for two in the heat.

Henrik Haapalainen got to the pull-ups first but was quickly passed by our resident rabbit farmer, Austin Hatfield.

Hatfield’s shorter range of motion played in his favor as he won the heat. Haapalainen and Chris Ibarra followed closely behind.

Hatfield looked like another athlete who could win both events as he came out swinging in Event 10 and was first off the rig and onto the yoke.

He practically ran the yoke down the floor and began to battle Bjorgvin Karl Gudmundsson on the bar muscle-ups.

Hatfield beat the time from the previous heat by over a minute.

The final heat of men took the floor and Jayson Hopper jumped out in front immediately, but all the men stayed close. Brent Fikowski caught up on the yoke carry.

It was a fight to the end, with Dallin Pepper pulling out the win in the heat just ahead of Sam Kwant.

Fikowski, currently in first place, finished in 11th place and lost almost all of his lead.

Pepper cut into the lead by finishing first in his heat in Event 9, and the men continued to battle in Event 10. Vellner got to the yoke first, but Pepper moved it first. Fikowski tried to catch Pepper on the second set of bar muscle-ups.

Vellner put his foot on the gas, and he and James Sprague got to the thrusters together.

Sprague pulled out second place in the heat and with it, the top of the podium.

One Last Thing

That’s a wrap for the 2024 CrossFit Games.

James Sprague Wins the 2024 CrossFit Games

James Sprague is the Fittest Man on Earth.

The final day of the 2024 CrossFit Games in Fort Worth, TX, saw the second-year Games athlete log consistent performances over the tremendously difficult weekend — both physically and emotionally — to claim the throne.

There were 200 points up for grabs in the final two events on Sunday, and 22-year-old Sprague took full advantage.

He knew what he needed to do to beat out Games veteran Brent Fikowski, who had a 60-point lead with eight events in the rearview.

The youngster went full send to end the weekend.

“To just be able to come out here and prove whatever hits me mentally, physically, I know that my spiritual strength is going to carry me through any challenge,” Sprague said during his post-event interview.

Event 1 “Lake Day” — 7th Place

Event 2 “Midline Climb” — 7th Place

Event 3 “Firestorm” — 4th Place

Event 4 “Track and Field” — 4th Place

Event 5 “Chad” — 1st Place

Event 6 “Clean Ladder” —21st Place

Event 7 “Push Pull 2.0” — 17th Place

Event 8 “Dickies Triplet” — 2nd Place

Event 9 and 10 “Final 2421, Final 1815” — 4th Place

A Recap of Sprague’s Big Weekend

Sprague started his competition weekend off with a top-10 finish in Event 1: “Lake Day.”

The young teen-athlete-turned-individual continued to lead even after a tumultuous first day when it wasn’t clear if the competition would even continue.

After a day of canceled events, the athletes who chose to continue competing made a somber return on Friday for Event 2 “Midline Climb.” Sprague did well here, finishing in seventh place.

The next event “Firestorm” was a great event for him as he held onto fourth place by dominating the Echo bike and fast burpees.

Athletes closed out Friday with a Friday Night Lights track event, where he also finished fourth, thanks to his speedy sprint capacity and ability to dig deep into the pain cave.

Saturday brought about its own set of challenging workouts, including Event 5 “Chad,” a clean ladder, and a twist on an iconic Games workout.

Sprague was a bit all over the map in terms of his finishes on Saturday, but his crowning achievement was his first-place finish in “Chad.”

This event was Sprague’s first Games event win as an individual athlete and proved to the entire field of competitors he was here to fight.

The clean ladder was his worst placement all weekend, 21st, but it didn’t hurt his overall scores that badly. He took 17th in “Push Pull 2.0,” a new and improved version of the 2014 event

Sprague, known more for his aerobic capacity than strength, was able to pull out a second-place finish in the “Dickies Triplet,” which was a workout that tested the athletes’ grit and overall willingness to hurt, especially during those 200-meter runs.

The final two events of the weekend proved to be a condensed version of “moving day,” with 200 points up for grabs.

Sprague came into the event in second place and 41 points behind Fikowski.

He knew he had to make some major moves on the workouts and he did just that to clinch the title of Fittest Man on Earth.

USA, USA

The title returned to the United States after Canadian Jeffrey Adler was crowned Fittest Man on Earth at the 2023 CrossFit Games.

Prior to that, Americans dominated the top spot, including Justin Medeiros, Mat Fraser, Ben Smith, and Rich Froning.

Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr Wins the 2024 CrossFit Games, Her 7th Overall

Sports are unpredictable.

Except when it comes to Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr.

She wins. Every single time.

And on Sunday, after a long, emotional weekend, 30-year-old Toomey-Orr did it once again en route to becoming the seven-time CrossFit Games champion. It’s a feat no man or woman has ever achieved before her.

“I think this is definitely the best one yet. Ever,” Toomey-Orr said in a post-event interview. “I have always had a really strong support network, but this year we have really had to lean on my family to make sure [my daughter] Willow had everything she needed throughout the season…I have no regrets.”

Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr at the 2024 CrossFit Games

Toomey-Orr, who sat out last season because she was pregnant and gave birth to Willow last May, logged six event wins and two other top-five performances in what can only be considered a dominant performance from start to finish in Fort Worth, TX.

Toomey-Orr never had a finish outside of the top 10, her lowest placing being seventh on both “Firestorm” and “Push Pull 2.0.

Here’s how her placings broke down:

Event 2 – 1st

Event 3 – 7th

Event 5 – 4th

Event 6 – 1st

Event 7 – 7th

Event 8 – 1st

Event 9 – 2nd

Event 10 – 1st

One big thing: Toomey-Orr won by a considerable margin — 151 points ahead of second-place finisher Gabi Migala. That being said, on three occasions, she has won by considerably more than that.

Toomey-Orr’s largest margin of victory was in 2020, when she won by 360 points. In 2021, she won by 256, and in 2019, she won by 195 points.

Her three other victories were in 2017, 2018, and 2022. In 2017, she won by just two points over Kara Saunders. In 2018, she won by 64 points and by 113 in 2022.

In her career, Toomey-Orr has 41 total event wins at the CrossFit Games.

Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr’s CrossFit Games History

We have said it before, and we’ll say it again: Toomey-Orr is the G.O.A.T.

As a quick reminder, here is her Games podium record:

2015 – 2nd

2016 – 2nd

2017 – 1st
