Masters CrossFit Athlete Jolene Quirke Works to Beat Cancer a Second Time

Athletes who qualified for the 2024 Masters CrossFit Games were front and center, as this year’s competition was held completely separate from the elite individuals. The event itself was hosted by Legends and took place in Birmingham, AL, from August 29 to September 1.

Athletes qualified for this new version of the Masters CrossFit Games in multiple age groups and traveled from all corners of the globe to celebrate fitness.

It should have been the highlight of Jolene Quirke’s CrossFit career.

But Quirke didn’t make it to Birmingham. Instead, she was at home fighting cancer for a second time.

How It All Began

Quirke has been training in CrossFit since 2009, when a college rugby teammate introduced her to the sport.

She took to it quickly, opened an affiliate, and became a mainstay at Regionals starting in 2012.

“I was a gymnast, and I loved training more than anything,” Quirke told the Morning Chalk Up in an interview. “I was good enough to compete, and that was great, but the training was more important to me.”

After five years of competing as an individual at Regionals, Quirke finally punched her ticket and qualified in the 35-39 age group for the CrossFit Games. She finished ninth in 2019.

Unfortunately, then her life took a turn.

Quirke explained: “I had my daughter in August 2020 and was diagnosed in September with melanoma and a tumor in my leg. For about a year and a half, I went through immunotherapy to treat it. But I never stopped training. I just love to train.”

Quirke beat her cancer and began rehabbing her body. She started to feel healthier and got back to working out.

“I’ve always participated in the Open, but this past year,” she said, “I felt like I was getting myself back, and I was at the bottom of a new age division.”

Quirke felt that it was a good opportunity to make another run at the Games, so she stuck with the tried-and-true method that got her there the first time.

“I didn’t change my training that much. I stick to old-school CrossFit training,” Quirke said. “I don’t do a lot of volume — I just do the workouts I program for the gym. I don’t do anything different except work on a little additional strength.”

Quirke had a great Open and Quarterfinals and finished 13th in the 40-44 age group in Semifinals. This was enough to qualify her for the CrossFit Games again.

That was when she got a call from her oncologist.

A World Turned Upside Down

“I had been running a lot, but my runs were getting a little slower. I couldn’t figure out why,” she remembered. “I was also swimming, and I was slightly struggling. I could tell something was off, but I’ve had asthma my whole life; I thought it could be that and then didn’t think anything else of it. Then I got the call from my oncologist who told me I needed to get a PET [positron emission tomography] scan.”

During her time in remission, Quirke had been checking in with her doctor every three months, and at one of those appointments, they had found nodules on her lungs.

A lot of people have nodules, but because of her asthma, her doctor wanted to keep a careful eye on them. After quarterly CAT scans, he didn’t like the growth of one and told Quirke to get the PET scan.

“And there it was,” Quirke said. “It was positive for cancer.”

Things went from bad to worse. In late July, Quirke got a bronchoscopy — a procedure that examines the lungs using a thin, flexible tube called a bronchoscope — when her lung collapsed with the anesthesia.

This caused something called pleural effusion, where fluid accumulates in your lungs.

With the CrossFit Games scheduled to take place at the end of August, it quickly became clear that Quirke would not be making the trip.

They have been trying to remove the fluid, and Quirke now has something called a PleurX Catheter inserted in her chest wall.

It is not pleasant.

“I have a catheter, so I drain the fluid manually, and it’s been awful,” Quirke explained. “I just want to get this thing out of me because it’s been awful. I can’t believe how it was fine, and then that stupid procedure just took me down the wrong, crazy road.”

Embracing Her Therapy With Optimism

Movement has always been therapy for Quirke, and she has continued to try to incorporate it into her days, even in her condition.

“I tried to finally ride a C2 bike yesterday, and I didn’t have to stop, which was amazing! I think once I get moving and doing what I love, I’ll be better off mentally. No matter what’s happening, I feel like I need that and haven’t been able to do it. That tears your spirit down,” she shared.

“I don’t need a carrot to chase,” Quirke said, “I just want to train.

Although her family pushes her to fight her illness even harder, Quirke is careful with how much she shares with her three children. All she’s told them is that her lungs are sick, and she is trying to get them better.

Still, she continues to find the good in a horrible situation.

“I think with CrossFit and competitors, we forget sometimes that there is more to life than that,” Quirke said. “I don’t know why we’re like that, but this has opened my eyes. I don’t put all my eggs in that basket — the competing isn’t all I care about.”

Upset: Derek Lunsford Drops to Third at 2024 Mr. Olympia

In a surprising twist, reigning Mr. Olympia Derek Lunsford placed third at the 2024 Mr. Olympia on Oct. 12, 2024.

Heading into the weekend, Lunsford was considered a conservative favorite to repeat his historic victory in 2023.

Last year, Lunsford became the first man in history to win both the Mr. Olympia and 212 divisions.

When Lunsford’s name was called, fans in the Resorts World Theater audibly gasped. In character, Lunsford accepted his bronze medal with humility and composure. Second place was claimed by Hadi Choopan; Samson Dauda walked away with his first Sandow.

Derek Lunsford Gets 3rd at 2024 Mr. Olympia

Lunsford’s one-and-done was a surprise, but commentator and seven-time Mr. Olympia winner Phil Heath offered some real-time explanations for his placement.

“Let’s work on those shoulders, hamstrings, and upper chest,” Heath said. He remarked that Lunsford may have too much back development at the expense of other muscles.

If Lunsford can smooth out his rough edges and bring back the conditioning that supported his win in 2023, another Olympia title is surely on the table. Lunsford’s backpedal reinforces a mounting trend in the Men’s Open division: No dynastic ruler.

Since Heath’s last win in 2017, only Mamdouh “Big Ramy” Elssbiay has been able to clinch more than one win at bodybuilding’s biggest show. Dauda deserved his victory this year, but one thing is clear: the competitive climate in Open bodybuilding is hotter than ever.

Chris Bumstead Announces Retirement From Bodybuilding

No king rules forever. On the evening of Oct. 12, 2024, social media superstar and now six-time Classic Physique Olympia winner Chris Bumstead announced his retirement from competitive bodybuilding

“This is going to be my last time on this stage,” said Bumstead, 29, shortly after the Finals of the 2024 Classic Physique Olympia in Las Vegas, NV.

Bumstead’s illustrious career began in 2017. Since then, “CBum” has blossomed into one of the most recognizable fitness celebrities on the planet and bagged more wins at the Classic Physique “O” than any other athlete in the division’s history.

Chris Bumstead on Retirement: “I Hope I’ve Set the Standard”

Bumstead’s retirement from Classic Physique did not come as a surprise. Fans have long suspected that Bumstead, nearing 30, would hang up his lifting belt after clinching another win at the sport’s most prestigious competition.

In the past, Bumstead signaled he would pull back from bodybuilding after his 30th birthday. He’ll hit the big 3-0 in Feb. 2025.

[Related: Best Pre-Workout Supplements]

Moreover, Bumstead has spent the last few years filling his cup with business ventures and an expanded family.

Beyond partial ownership in the Florida-based RAW Athletic Club, gymwear brand Gymshark, and supplement and meal prep lines, Bumstead and partner Courtney King welcomed their daughter, Bradley, in 2023. He also suffers from Berger disease, which can be progressively damaging to the kidneys.

“I’ve sacrificed a lot the past few years, and it’s been rewarded,” said Bumstead on stage. “I’ve been so grateful, and now it’s time to step down.”

The Classic Physique Olympia has been Bumstead’s only competition appearance since he first won in 2018. The rapidly growing Classic Physique division, a crowd favorite, owes much of its ascent to Bumstead’s presence in the bodybuilding industry.

The champ did not explicitly mention his immediate plans after the 2024 Olympia wraps up. One thing is certain — next year, it’s a whole new ball game.

How It Happened

The live crowd was educated on the differences between the athletes, whose previous injuries might inform their aesthetics. The judges knew each athlete’s story and considered that during comparisons.

The judges put all 12 athletes through multiple posing rounds throughout the first two callouts. Clearly, the field was dialed in, and the finer aesthetic details would make the difference. The third callout started with four athletes, but Monteiro and John were added at the last moment.

Urs Kalecinski’s Big Surprise at the 2024 Classic Physique Olympia

German bodybuilder Urs Kalecinski had perhaps the most unexpected showing at the 2024 Olympia so far, at least among the Classic Physique Olympia competitors.

Fans packed into the Resorts World Theater on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024, to watch the Classic Physique Olympia pre-judging event. This was the first real opportunity to see how the division’s leaders look at this year’s “O.”

Kalecinski took a different approach for this year’s Classic Physique Olympia than he’d done in years past. “The Miracle Bear,” as he’s known, went into hibernation during his contest prep to both preserve his mental health and surprise the crowd at the Olympia.

It seems to have worked.

[Related: Best Pre-Workout Supplements]

Urs Kalecinski 2024 Classic Physique Olympia Pre-Judging

While most of the Classic Physique Olympia superstars, including five-time champ Chris Bumstead, publicize the ins and outs of their prep diet, Kalecinski went “shadow mode” in 2024.

Less than a month out from the big day, Kalecinski touched on the rigors of prepping to compete on bodybuilding’s biggest stage. “Put yourself in my shoes,” Kalecinski said on Sep. 22. “If you wouldn’t feel any pressure, call me and tell me your secret.”

Kalecinski could be seen shrouded in a large, oversized sweatshirt in the weeks leading up to (and during) the 2024 Olympia. His strategy is reminiscent of Bumstead’s iconic Carhartt jacket from 2022 or Dorian Yates’ penchant for concealing his physique backstage (that’s how he earned his nickname, “the Shadow”).

Climate Change: The Classic Physique Olympia is a pressure cooker. While Bumstead’s sixth consecutive win seems a foregone conclusion, a resurgent Wesley Vissers has dominated the airwaves this year as the man who may assume the throne once Bumstead abdicates.

[Related: Best Whey Protein Powders]

Kalecinski, just 26, has long been regarded as the division’s “little brother,” despite placing fourth, third, and third at the Classic Physique Olympia between 2021 and 2023. But Kalecinski’s package this year seems to signal a new era for the Bear.

Kalecinski made first and last callouts during the Classic Physique Olympia pre-judging session, and he deserved it. Kalecinski seems to have added significant muscle mass, particularly to his arms which historically had been a weak point for him.

He was joined in the final callout by Bumstead and Mike Sommerfeld, who appears poised to leap from 8th in 2023 to a top-five finish in ’24.

Is Kalecinski in shape enough to improve his placement at the Classic Physique Olympia? Hard telling, but fans won’t have to wait long. The finals are set for Oct. 12 at 10:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Stick with BarBend for up-to-the-minute results.

One thing’s for sure — the Miracle Bear emerged from hibernation looking bigger and badder than ever.

The three former champions in the lineup — Ashley Kaltwasser, Angelica Teixeira, and Elisa Pecini — all had crowd support. However, Lauralie Chapados occupied the center of the first callout with Kaltwasser. The judges frequently moved the other contenders around to get the best evaluations.

The competitors in the final callout were Kaltwasser, Chapados, Aimee Leann Delgado, and Jasmine Gonzalez. They are your top four heading into finals.

Nothing is guaranteed yet, but the top ten will move on to the finals at Resorts World Theater to determine who will leave Las Vegas as the new Olympia champion. Fans can watch from home via the live stream available on the Olympia Productions website, and BarBend will provide updates throughout the day as the 2024 Olympia Weekend continues.
