Cydney Gillon Wins 2024 Figure Olympia

The 2024 Figure Olympia finals were held on Friday, Oct. 11, 2024, at Resorts World Theater in Las Vegas, NV. Prejudging featured all the qualified contestants who arrived in Las Vegas to compete.

Out of those competitors, the top 10 were invited to return to the stage for the finals to crown the 2024 champion. This group was led by seven-time winner Cydney Gillon, who was believed to be the favorite by many fans of the division.

The fans were right, but it’s going to be the final time. As she accepted her medal, Gillon told host Bob Cicherillo that she would be retiring from competitive bodybuilding after winning her eighth title.

“Last Year, I Wasn’t Impressed”: Samir Bannout’s Top 10 Mr. Olympia Predictions

Although 1983 Mr. Olympia Samir Bannout still penciled Derek Lunsford into his number-one slot for the 2024 Mr. Olympia, on Oct. 11-12, he left the door open for the 2023 champion Derek Lunsford to leave Las Vegas without a second straight Sandow trophy

In fact, if it were up to the Bannout, Lunsford wouldn’t have become the first bodybuilder to capture crowns in multiple divisions — a historic feat accomplished on Nov. 5, 2023.

Bannout shared his top 10 predictions on the Oct. 7 edition of The Muscle Maturity Podcast, which can be seen below:

[Related: Best Supplements for Bodybuilding]

Samir Bannout’s 2024 Mr. Olympia Top 10 Predictions

Bannout joined three-time Natural Mr. Universe John Hansen and co-host Marcus Guerrero to offer his best guess at how the 2024 Mr. Olympia will shake out. After forgetting to include Martin Fitzwater on his first go-around, his final top 10 featured plenty of familiar faces, along with some interesting commentary on those selections:

Derek Lunsford

Andrew Jacked

Hadi Choopan

Samson Dauda

Nick Walker

Brandon Curry

Martin Fitzwater

Hunter Labrada

Rafael Brandao

Mohamed Foda

Editor’s Note: Walker announced a last-minute withdrawal from the 2024 Olympia on Oct. 5.

[Related: Jay Cutler Spills On the Most Challenging Aspect of Olympia Prep]

Lunsford didn’t exactly receive glowing remarks from the “Lion of Lebanon.

If Derek shows up like last year, he won’t repeat. Last year, I wasn’t impressed.

Bannout acknowledged Lunsford belongs in the top spot when he’s on his game. Yet, the Men’s Open division has several worthy contenders who could topple the reigning champion from his throne.

There are two competitors with Olympia crowns on their resumes, and 2023 third-place finisher Samson Dauda is vying for the top spot.

Digging Deeper Into the Top Mr. Olympia Contenders

Bannout didn’t put Choopan, the 2022 Mr. Olympia, in his runner-up slot. He gave that nod to Nigerian bodybuilder Andrew Jacked, winner of the 2024 Texas Pro

If Andrew is 100%, that can change things, too.

Whether Jacked actually renders Choopan a bronze medalist remains to be seen. The former champion possesses an imposing physique, top-tier conditioning, and unmatched intensity.

That area from his upper thighs to his abs and chest are chiseled…will change the minds of some of the judges.

[Related: Hadi Choopan’s Final “Peak Week” Leg Day Before the 2024 Mr. Olympia]

Choopan seeks to avenge last year’s controversial second-place finish to Lunsford. He drew plenty of criticism for walking off the stage after losing the title to his fellow Evogen Nutrition athlete and Hany Rambod client.

Going from runner-up to third place, or worse, would certainly be a tough pill for Choopan to swallow.

Will “The Martian” Meet Expectations?

Despite leaving him off his initial top 10, Bannout corrected his mistake and delivered a bold statement about Martin Fitzwater.

He’s missing nothing.

Just 27 years old, Fitzwater won the inaugural Detroit Pro to secure his spot in the 2024 Olympia. He followed up with an impressive showing at the New York Pro by nearly beating Walker.

[Related: Best Barbells On the Market]

Four-time champion Jay Cutler called Fitzwater his dark horse. It’ll be fascinating to see if the rising star makes good on those predictions despite being one of the youngest competitors in Mr. Olympia history.

Samson Dauda Strips Down, Stuns Crowd at 2024 Mr. Olympia Press Conference

They’re ready and raring — the best bodybuilders in the world took to the stage on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024, during the pre-event press conference for the 2024 Mr. Olympia contest. With microphone in-hand, Samson Dauda seized the moment when he was asked why he deserved to be Mr. Olympia more than the men seated next to him:

“We’ve heard everybody’s speeches, but I’ve never been one for talking,” Dauda said before unzipping his jacket, removing his shirt, and hitting a few poses in front of the crowd while his competitors remained seated. “I’m a man of action.”

He was met with raucous whistling and applause from the crowd. Dauda talked a big game at the presser, and judging by his on-stage demeanor, he isn’t playing things close to the chest this year.

[Related: Best Pre-Workout Supplements]

The 2024 Olympia press conference is bodybuilding’s cold war; plenty of choice words thrown back and forth, the occasional chest puffery — made literal by Dauda this year — and usually little else.

It’s an opportunity for the athletes to stake their claim in advance, and a chance for fans to watch their favorite competitors rattle their sabers.

On occasion, tensions from the Olympia presser boil over. In 2014, longtime rivals Phil Heath and Kai Greene exchanged words at the conference and, shortly after, engaged in a physical altercation on the Olympia stage itself.

[Related: Best Whey Protein Powders]

Can Samson Dauda Win the 2024 Mr. Olympia?

Dauda is a strong competitor, but the 2024 Mr. Olympia boasts an extremely competitive climate. Dauda placed third in ’23, — the gap between bronze and silver is a long leap, not a short hop.

Last year, Dauda took third by way of a 28-point card; well above fourth-placer Brandon Curry’s 41.

However, 2023 runner-up Hadi Choopan ended ten card points above Dauda, and only five behind that year’s winner, Derek Lunsford.

[Related: Best Supplements for Bodybuilding]

The 2024 Olympia will be Dauda’s first appearance without coach Milos Sarcev since the pair parted ways back in March. Despite the changing of the guard, Dauda seemed confident about improving his placement this year.

Dauda turned to his colleagues, taunting them to disrobe and join him in an impromptu pose-down. No one obliged, though Lunsford was seen with a big smile. Choopan sat with his arms folded.

The Men’s Open competitors won’t have to wait long to settle the score.

Prepare for the New Year Rush: Effective Q4 Social Media Strategies

Data-driven insights and strategic planning can set the stage for social media strategies’ success

As the New Year approaches, there is a marked increase in interest as everyone sets resolutions to get fit, eat healthier, improve their mental well-being, and lead more active lifestyles. You know the drill.

For brands in these spaces, this period presents a prime opportunity to attract and engage new leads. However, to fully capitalize on this, preparation must begin well before the clock strikes midnight on December 31. The fourth quarter (Q4) is critical for strategizing and laying the groundwork for successful New Year campaigns.

“Preparing in Q4 is essential for fitness and wellness brands looking to make the most of the New Year surge,” says Saskia Topp, founder at ekhos (echoes) agency, a leading digital marketing agency for the health, wellness, and fitness industry.

Topp says this preparation allows brands to position themselves effectively, ensuring they are top of mind when consumers embark on their fitness and wellness journeys in January.

“Many brands overlook the importance of Q4, assuming that the influx of clients will naturally come,” Topp continues. “However, without strategic positioning, they risk blending into the noise of the New Year rush. The opportunity to capitalize on the January surge is quick, and those who are prepared are the ones who will maximize their growth during this critical time.”

Topp adds that digital marketing is where brands are seeing the greatest success—whether through social media, strong media buying strategies, SEO, or email and automation marketing.

“By leveraging these tools, we help brands connect with their audience and drive impactful results,” Topp adds. “At ekhos, we specialize in crafting impact-driven digital wellness strategies, ensuring your brand not only stands out but thrives in the most competitive season of the year.”

Leveraging The Last Quarter

Q4 holds particular strategic importance compared to other quarters because of the long view it offers. From this perch, fitness and wellness brands can analyze the past year’s performance, identify trends, and set clear goals for the upcoming year. Decision-makers are usually well-armed with metrics and data at this point.

“Data-driven insights are invaluable in guiding the preparation process for Q1,” Topp explains. “Yet, many digital marketing strategies fail to fully utilize the wealth of data available. We rely exclusively on data when creating digital strategies, ensuring that every decision is backed by solid insights.”

Topp says that by analyzing digital metrics such as online consumer behavior, engagement rates, and ad performance, brands can pinpoint what has worked and where there are opportunities for improvement. This detailed data analysis enables ekhos to craft highly targeted and effective campaigns that align with the audience’s New Year goals.

“In the competitive digital wellness landscape, those who leverage data to its fullest potential are the ones who will truly stand out and drive impactful results,” Topp says.

For instance, ekhos recently worked with Shred415, a leading HIIT fitness studio, to refine its social media strategy based on detailed consumer insights. The result was a highly engaging campaign that led to a significant increase in customer interaction and conversions. From March 2023 to March 2024, the brand saw a 154% increase in engagement, a 22.3% rise in organic search over six months, and an overall 15% increase in average revenue from October 2022 to October 2023. Another client, Power Plate USA, has experienced a 42.6% increase in organic followers across all social media platforms and a 55.1% increase in video views.

Aligning Social Media Content

A fresh year is an ideal time to align (or re-align, as the case may be) social media content with common intentions and resolutions. Here’s how fitness and wellness brands can effectively create content that resonates with these goals:

Identifying and Addressing Key Goals:

Target Key Resolutions: Identify common and trending wellness goals like strength building, recovery, convenience, mental health, and adopting a healthier lifestyle for longevity.

Targeted Content: Develop content with practical tips, humanized stories, and achievable milestones that motivate your audience, while leveraging UGC (User Generated Content) and ekhos’s budget-friendly influencer strategy to amplify reach and engagement through UGC.

Engaging Content Formats:

Diverse Content Types: Utilize various content formats like videos, LinkedIn and Instagram carousels, social media trends, infographics, and interactive posts to keep your audience engaged. Each social media platform should feature varied content tailored to its audience.

Staying Current with Trends:

Incorporate Trends: Stay current with social media and industry trends, optimizing captions for SEO and engaging with challenges and trending topics to boost visibility and engagement.

Campaign Examples:

Intention and Goal Challenge: If you’re a fitness studio, launch a challenge that encourages your audience to commit to their fitness goals. Offer incentives such as discounts, branded partnership gifts, free trials or branded merchandise for participants who stay engaged throughout the challenge.

Refer a Friend Campaign: Kick off January with a “Refer a Friend” campaign, offering rewards like discounts or free incentives when customers refer a friend. This can be combined with a challenge for fitness studios, encouraging participants to engage alongside their friends. This strategy expands your brand’s reach, builds community, and drives sales during the New Year surge.

Brand Partnerships: Collaborate with recognizable, complementary brands to offer bundled promotions, joint events, or giveaways in January. This expands your reach, introduces your brand to new audiences, and creates added value for customers, boosting engagement and sales during the New Year period.

Strategic Planning and Storytelling:

Maintain consistent messaging across all social platforms to reflect your brand’s voice and values. Strategic planning ensures each piece of content aligns with your brand identity. Use storytelling to make your content relatable, sharing personal transformations, behind-the-scenes moments, and client success stories to build an emotional connection with your audience.

Clear Calls to Action:

Ensure every piece of content has a clear call to action, such as purchasing a product, signing up for a class, downloading an app, or participating in a challenge. Guide your audience towards taking the next step in their fitness journey with your brand.Credit: ekhos agency

“Creating meaningful connections and crafting compelling digital strategies that drive engagement is central to our mission,” says Topp. “Our goal is to empower health, wellness, and fitness brands to develop impactful campaigns that not only attract customers but also build lasting relationships.”

By leveraging Q4 for strategic preparation, aligning digital marketing, such as social media content with New Year resolutions and trends, creating anticipation for purchasing products that lead new programs, and analyzing successful initiatives, brands can maximize their impact. Start planning now to ensure your brand is ready to make the most of the New Year surge in health and wellness interest.

Elisa Alcantara joined the three in the final callout, but Nunes and Mattos remained in the center. The crowd favored the judges’ call.

Nunes and Mattos were compared directly in a final callout. Judges declared them the top two, but it was unclear who would take the overall title.

Commentary

2023 Olympia runner-up Learmont had her share of fans cheering her on. However, the majority of the fans supported two-time winner Missy Truscott, who returned after suffering an injury during the 2023 contest.

The first and final callouts featured Truscott and Tamara Vahn in the center, meaning the judges considered them the best. Pre-judging (i.e., the Physique round) counts for one-third of the Fitness competitors’ scores. Truscott had great width and definition and appeared the overall favorite.

2024 Fitness Olympia Finals Preview

The Routine round, the final round of this competition, is part of the Friday night show at the Resorts World Theater in Las Vegas. If you are not in Las Vegas, you can order the 2024 Olympia pay-per-view to watch the action live on the Olympia Productions website. Stay tuned to BarBend for continuing coverage of this and all 11 pro divisions of the 2024 Olympia.
