Transparent Labs Casein Protein Review (2024): Athlete-Tested and Dietitian-Approved

We all know — and if not, now you do — one of the best ways to support your work in the gym is by consuming enough high-quality protein. (1) But when there are only so many hours in the day, a product like Transparent Labs Casein Protein, which is among the best protein powders we’ve tested, can aid with protein supplementation to help build muscle — even as you sleep.

We had our team’s registered dietitian give us the lowdown on what you can expect from this slow-absorbing protein powder, while I — in the midst of working to increase my vertical jump and improve ballistic core strength — added the product into my nighttime routine while adhering to the BarBend supplement testing methodology. Overall, we think this casein powder is a delicious and texturally unique alternative to standard whey protein, and believe anyone looking to shake up their protein intake could benefit from giving this product a shot. Read on for more of our thoughts on Transparent Labs Casein Protein.

Transparent Labs Grass-Fed Casein

Main Takeaways

Unlike whey protein, casein protein is absorbed by the body at a slower rate, and studies have shown it can improve protein synthesis and muscle recovery while sleeping. (2)

There are 25 grams of micellar casein protein per serving.

Transparent Labs uses third-party testing to keep the consumer informed about the quantity of ingredients and any contamination or presence of heavy metals.

Transparent Labs Casein Protein Specs

While you may be more familiar with whey protein, one of the most popular types of protein you’ll find in supplements, the casein protein found in Transparent Labs 100% Grass-Fed Casein Protein is also a milk protein. However, unlike whey proteins, casein protein is broken down more slowly in the body, which can help fuel your muscles when you haven’t had a meal or a nosh in a few hours. A serving size of rapidly-digestible whey, as opposed to casein, gets broken down and used by the body in about two hours, while a serving of casein can take about six hours. (3)(4)

One scoop of Transparent Labs Casein Protein.

This is why Transparent Labs Casein Protein is marketed and often used as a pre-night-night protein supplement, so that while you’re catching some shut-eye, your body can continue to process and use protein for muscle protein synthesis, a key part of recovery after a workout.

Each serving size provides 120 calories, with those calories coming primarily from protein. “With 25 grams of protein and only 0.5 grams of fat and 4 grams of carbs per scoop, you’re able to boost your protein intake without skewing your other macros,” says BarBend expert contributor and registered dietitian Chelsea Rae Bourgeois.

While the flavor offerings are limited — you can only get this in Chocolate— it tastes so good that perhaps they thought, “Why mess with perfection?” I mixed in a blender bottle with water and blended some up with tofu to make a high-protein late-night-craving pudding, and let me tell you, this chocolate flavor is where it’s at. However, knowing how protein-flavor fatigued I can get, especially when I’m focused on hypertrophy, I can see myself wanting to eventually switch up flavors down the line. At that point, I’ll need to look at other brands to get my fix.

Pros

Slow-digesting casein protein ideal for nighttime use

Third-party lab tested

No artificial sweeteners, coloring, or added sugars

Transparent ingredients
Cons

Only one available flavor

Pricey compared to other options

May not be suitable for those with dairy sensitivities or milk allergies

Who Should Use / Who Shouldn’t Use Transparent Labs Casein Protein

While the studies on slow-digesting casein protein when used before bed are mixed, there’s no denying that elevated protein content in your diet (along with training) can support muscle growth, weight loss, and post-workout recovery. (5)(6)(7) With that in mind, here’s who we think is best-suited for this product.

Recommended for:

Bodybuilders and fitness fans wanting a slow-digesting protein before bed

Health-conscious athletes looking for clean ingredients

Anyone wanting high protein but low fat and carbohydrate macro splits

Not Recommended for:

Those who have milk sensitivities or are lactose intolerant

Anybody who doesn’t like chocolate

Individuals on a tight budget

Our Experience Using Transparent Labs Casein Protein

We got our hands (and countertops) dirty while testing Transparent Labs Casein Protein by adding it to our bedtime routine. While I usually indulge in the best greens powders, creatine, pre-workouts, and branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) during the day, I’d never tried downing a casein protein shake at night to support my recovery. However, as someone who’s always trying to put on more muscle mass, I was more than willing to extend my wind-down ritual, all while scoring this product on a scale of 1 (not good) to 5 (we love it) in categories such as taste, formula, solubility, and side effects.

Our tester incorporated Transparent Labs Casein Protein into her night-time routine.

So, how did it go? Did I build a monster dump trunk? Did my vertical jump increase so that I could finally become a blocker in beach volleyball? Sadly, no — these things take time — but there’s plenty to love about this product. Read on for more details about our experience with Transparent Labs Casein Protein.

Ingredients and Formulation

Transparent Labs Casein Protein scores a 4.75 out of 5 for its formulation, with high marks for its ingredients list and macronutrient ratios,” says BarBend expert contributor and registered dietitian Chelsea Rae Bourgeois. “I’m a fan of the macro breakdown that Transparent Labs offers with their Casein Protein powder. You get a whopping 25 grams of protein without an overwhelming amount of carbs or fat. It helps you meet your protein needs without overdoing it in other areas.”

While there’s some discussion about casein powder being more difficult to digest for those with milk sensitivities or a lactose intolerance, both myself and an additional tester experienced no bloating, GI issues, or stomach discomfort after use. (8)

You won’t find any preservatives, fillers, or artificial ingredients here. The gluten-free ingredient list is simple: instantized grass-fed micellar casein, sweetened with stevia, and flavored with cocoa powder, natural flavors, and Himalayan rock salt. However, one thing to note is that the inclusion of Himalayan rock salt provides about 13% of what the FDA says is the maximum amount of sodium an adult should consume a day. (9) “This protein powder contains 300 milligrams of sodium per scoop, which is a significant amount of your day’s recommended total,” says Bourgeois.

Transparent Labs Casein Protein nutrition label.

Additionally, while amino acids aren’t necessarily ingredients, they’re essential nutrients worth noting since casein protein is a complete protein, providing all the essential amino acids — in fact, more histidine, methionine, and phenylalanine than you’ll find in whey protein —and BCAAs. (10)(11) You’ll also be consuming 60% of your daily recommended calcium intake with this supplement — we love this, as it’s higher than the average 10% you’ll find in many whey proteins.

Solubility

This Transparent Labs product is soft, light, and fluffy, and mixing it in a blender bottle is super easy. Unlike some of the best vegan protein powders, which can sometimes leave a ton of product that settles to the bottom of your drink, this powder stayed smooth from the first sip until the last. Solubility scored a 4.5 out of 5.

Transparent Labs Casein Protein, as seen here, mixed really well with water.

However, due to how light and airy this powder is, it also made a wee bit of a mess on my countertops. Thankfully, the plastic bin kept the mess mildly contained — except for a couple of poof explosions that occurred when I dug into the bin too hastily — but if this product had come in one of those upright bags, there would have been more powder on the floor and counter than in my cup.

Third-Party Testing

Rest assured that what you’re putting into your body is exactly as advertised. Not only does Transparent Labs pride itself on the transparency of ingredients — no proprietary blends here — but each supplement is also third-party tested for purity.

On their website, you’ll find a certificate of analysis that gives insight into contaminants and tests for heavy metals, as well as a certificate of composition detailing the actual ingredients and amount of ingredients within the product. For fitness professionals needing to avoid banned substances, this is the easiest way to know exactly what you’re putting in your body. This third-party testing scored a perfect 5 out of 5.

Taste

I’ve tried some of the best-tasting protein powders, and as a self-proclaimed protein savant, I was a little peeved that Chocolate was the only flavor available. Bourgeois agrees, “I wish Transparent Labs offered their Casein Protein in more flavors. If you’re not a fan of chocolate or vanilla you’re out of luck.” (Transparent Labs previously offered the Vanilla flavor, but at the time of this writing it’s not available.)

To be honest, I’m sick and tired of chocolate-flavored protein shakes. I need spice in my life, or at least a unique flavor that’s going to make me excited to wash out my blender bottle from the previous day’s fix. However, not only did Transparent Lab’s Casein Protein Chocolate flavor not disappoint, but it impressed. Flavor scored a 5 out of 5. While I wouldn’t use this powder in a smoothie, I did mix up a high-protein tofu pudding with it, which was fab-u-lous! I could eat this stuff every night. It tastes that good.

For those interested in my tofu pudding high-protein snack, here’s the recipe:

Put tofu block into blender.

Add two scoops of Transparent Labs Casein Protein Powder.

Add in some water, milk, or milk alternative when the blender refuses to do its job well.

Blend until smooth.

Add in chia seeds and a little peanut butter if you like being extra.

Let sit in the fridge for an hour to let the chia seeds plump up and the pudding to chill.

Enjoy and give your partner a taste before telling them it’s made out of tofu.

For those without any tofu on hand (how do you live this way?), you can mix this casein protein powder with a little bit of water (about a 3:2 ratio) for a quick and simple protein pudding.

Price Per Serving

At $59.99 for a tub that provides 30 servings, that comes out to about $2 a serving — yes, I mathed. This price per serving scores a 2.25 out of 5. This is on the higher end of what we think most users are comfortable spending on a single supplement, though it’s worth noting that casein protein powders tend to cost more than most whey protein powders. Additionally, this price can be partially attributed to the extra cost of third-party testing.

What to Consider Before Buying Transparent Labs Casein Protein

We’ve gotten our hands on nearly 150 protein powders — from whey protein isolates to plant-based options — and have dabbled with casein protein, trying and testing more than 10 different options from top brands. After scoring various categories, Transparent Labs Casein Protein Powder came in third place with a 4.18 score out of 5, following on the heels of Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Casein (4.53 out of 5) and Legion Casein (4.5 out of 5). While we think it’s a top choice, the following are key areas you should consider before bringing this product into your rotation.

Type of Protein: While whey protein is typically best-suited for post-workout shakes and plant-based protein an option for vegans, casein protein is “a slow-digesting milk protein that can help to prevent muscle breakdown when consumed at bedtime, [or]… can promote satiety throughout the day when consumed as part of a meal or snack,” says registered dietitian and BarBend expert contributor Austin Bou. Consider which type of protein is most conducive to your diet and training regimen.

Price: This isn’t a budget-friendly option, and at $2 per serving it’s at the top range of the $1 to $2 per serving cost of our favorite casein protein powders. If you’re looking for budget supplements, you may want to consider another protein powder.

Flavor: Currently Transparent Labs only offers this casein protein in Chocolate, which may not be ideal for those who tend to suffer from flavor fatigue.

Solubility: Unlike whey or plant-based proteins, casein powder turns into a pudding-like substance with the addition of a small amount of water, milk, or milk substitute. If you’re looking for a new texture or a way to diversify your protein intake, this could be a good option.

Transparent Labs Casein Protein Vs. Competitors

The best casein protein for you depends on your personal preference and your susceptibility to particular side effects, including bloating or GI distress. As such, we’ve put together a little chart with how Transparent Labs Casein Protein stacks up against the competition, so you can see what’s what from brand to brand.

We chose a similarly high-end product, Legion Casein+, and one of the most budget-friendly options, Naked Nutrition Micellar Casein Protein Powder, to go toe-to-toe with Transparent Labs Casein Protein.

Each option provides a similar amount of protein per serving, with Naked Nutrition squeaking out a win in this category with 26 grams compared to Transparent Labs and Legion’s 25 grams. Legion and Naked also provide a wider range of flavor offerings over Transparent, so if you’re not a fan of chocolate, you may want to consider these other options.

However, Transparent Labs scored a perfect 5 out of 5 for taste with our team, while Legion Casein scored a 4.5 and Naked Casein scored a 4 out of 5. Additionally, while Naked Nutrition’s Micellar Casein Protein Powder does provide gluten testing, this limited testing doesn’t compare to the breadth of third-party testing done by Transparent Labs and Legion, which may mean that these two brands provide a higher quality casein supplement over Naked.

Transparent Labs Casein Protein poured from a Blender bottle into a glass.

Transparent Labs is a trusted brand in the sports nutrition industry, praised for their choice and transparency of ingredients in products ranging from protein powders, greens powders, mass gainers, pre-workouts, and even the best creatine supplements. There are thousands of positive reviews on the website, and Transparent Labs doesn’t appear to remove the good, the bad, or the ugly — so you can see any reviews whether it has 5 stars or 1 star.

Our Final Verdict on Transparent Labs Casein Protein

The worst part about this job is being introduced to products that you now know you don’t want to go without. Ignorance is bliss! Transparent Labs Casein Protein tastes good, has 25 grams of protein, and caused me no GI issues or bloating throughout my testing.

While my heart wants to repurchase this product once my bin runs out, my head may argue that the $2 per serving price tag is a little too pricey to maintain. However, for those of you who value third-party testing and are willing to spend what it takes to support your muscle gain goals, this casein protein powder may be exactly what you’re looking for.

Hadi Choopan Final Peak Week Leg Day With Coach Hany Rambod Before the 2024 Mr. Olympia

The road to Olympia is a year-round endeavor, with training evolving dramatically through different stages. Bodybuilders transition from the bulking season to the cutting phase, prioritizing muscle preservation and definition as they enter peak week (the final seven days before a competition).

On Oct. 7, 2024, coach Hany Rambod offered a glimpse into former Olympia champ Hadi Choopan’s final peak week quad-dominant leg workout before the 2024 Mr. Olympia, scheduled for Oct. 10-13 in Las Vegas, NV.

Unilateral Movements For Better Isolation

Peak week is about refining existing muscle and enhancing definition rather than building new tissue. Unilateral exercises enable targeted stimulation, maximizing muscle contraction and stretch for sculpting. Choopan points his toes inward during leg extensions to bias the quad sweep.

Rambod gently taps Choopan’s quads during the concentrics as tactile feedback to enhance mind-muscle connection, which Rambod believes boosts force production, leading to sharper contractions.

Rambod explains that tactile feedback allows him to assess muscle fullness, providing crucial information for adjusting nutrition and training to improve muscle conditioning and separation.

Maximize Muscle Pumps

After three sets of leg presses with a shoulder-width stance, Choopan transitions to a narrower stance and performs more repetitions to increase blood flow to the quad sweeps and boost definition and vascularity. (1)

“We are not going crazy heavy; just getting that really good pump.

Rambod cautions against lifting too heavy or aiming for new personal records in the final week before a bodybuilding show to limit injury risk. Instead, he advises prioritizing a deep mind-muscle connection, increasing the time under tension, and focusing on the weakest muscle groups. (2)

Improve Glute & Quad Definition

Striated glutes have become the hallmark of peak conditioning. Full range of motion (ROM) squats can help achieve that sculpted aesthetic. Choopan uses the Panatta super squat machine, which allows for depth without straining the lower back.

Choopan transitions to Smith machine front squats to bias the quads, employing a narrow stance to zone in on the vastus lateralis. Rambod emphasizes controlled eccentrics and precise form to maximize muscle activation.

2024 Mr. Olympia

The epic rematch between Choopan and the reigning champion, Derek Lunsford, will headline the 2024 Olympia. While these two are the favorites to win the coveted Sandow trophy, former champion Brandon Curry, Samson Dauda, Andrew Jacked, Martin Fitzwater, and the always-dangerous Hunter Labrada are all vying for the title.

Should Choopan emerge victorious at the 2024 Olympia, he will etch his name in the annals of bodybuilding by becoming the second bodybuilder after Jay Cutler to reclaim the Olympia throne after losing it.

Samantha Briggs’ Path to Becoming a CrossFit Legend: What Every Athlete Needs to Know About Resilience

Samantha Briggs is a true powerhouse in CrossFit, known for her unmatched endurance, mental toughness, and incredible career. From firefighter to CrossFit Games Champion, her journey is full of grit, resilience, and victories over injuries that would have stopped most athletes. Discover how she dominated the 2013 Games, overcame setbacks, and continues to inspire a new generation of athletes. What makes her training unique? How has she remained at the top into her late 30s? Let’s dive into the story of a CrossFit legend who redefined what’s possible in the sport.

Early Life and Background

Childhood and Upbringing

Born in Manchester, UK, in 1982, Samantha Briggs showed a strong affinity for sports from an early age. Growing up, she was heavily involved in football (soccer) and swimming, two sports that laid the foundation for her endurance and discipline. Her athleticism in childhood gave her a head start, but little did she know that her greatest athletic achievements would come later in life.

Career as a Firefighter

Before becoming a household name in CrossFit, Samantha worked as a firefighter, a career that required strength, mental fortitude, and a commitment to public service. Her experience in this physically demanding role fostered the resilience and fitness that would serve her well in the grueling world of CrossFit. The mental toughness honed in high-pressure situations would later be a key asset in her athletic career.

Transition to CrossFit

It wasn’t until 2009 that Samantha discovered CrossFit, a sport that combined the endurance of her prior experiences with the intensity she craved. She was instantly hooked. Alongside CrossFit, she also dabbled in triathlons, showcasing her versatility and strength. Her diverse athletic background helped her develop the stamina, power, and determination that set her apart from the competition early in her CrossFit career.

Dominance in CrossFit Games

Early Years in CrossFit

In her first years competing, Samantha faced several challenges. She competed in her first CrossFit Open in 2010, experiencing a steep learning curve. However, her tenacity saw her rise from a struggling athlete to a force to be reckoned with by 2012. That year, she finished fourth in the CrossFit Games, a preview of the success that was to come.

2013 CrossFit Games Victory

Samantha’s career-defining moment came in 2013 when she claimed victory at the CrossFit Games. Known for her exceptional endurance, she dominated events that pushed athletes to their limits, such as the “Burden Run” and the “Sprint Chipper.” Her rigorous training regimen, which focused on both strength and endurance, paid off. Samantha not only overcame the brutal events but became one of the few non-American athletes to win the Games, cementing her place in CrossFit history.

Injuries and Comebacks

Her career hasn’t been without setbacks. In 2012, she suffered a knee injury that nearly ended her journey in CrossFit. But true to her resilient nature, Samantha made a triumphant comeback in 2013, winning the CrossFit Games shortly after her recovery. Further injuries, including shoulder surgeries, posed additional challenges, but each time, she returned stronger. Samantha’s reputation as the “Comeback Queen” solidified as she repeatedly proved her ability to overcome adversity.

Other Podium Finishes

Even after her 2013 victory, Samantha remained a dominant figure in CrossFit. She consistently placed in the top 10 in subsequent Games and continued to compete at an elite level well into her late 30s. In the Masters category, specifically for athletes aged 35 to 39, she proved that age was no barrier, achieving top finishes and showcasing the longevity of her career.

Training Philosophy and Approach

Endurance Focus

One of Samantha’s defining qualities is her unmatched endurance. While many CrossFit athletes focus heavily on raw strength, Samantha has always prioritized stamina. Her training often includes long-distance running, cycling, and swimming, elements that allow her to outlast many of her competitors. This focus on endurance has consistently set her apart from others in the field.

Strength and Conditioning

Samantha’s training balances strength work with cardiovascular fitness, making her a well-rounded athlete. Functional fitness is at the core of her workouts, and she emphasizes mental toughness alongside physical strength. Her approach includes varied training, mixing heavy lifts with high-rep conditioning work, to ensure that she’s prepared for any challenge thrown her way during competitions.

Unique Methods and Recovery

Samantha is known for using unconventional training methods, often preferring to train outdoors in extreme conditions. She has cycled across countries, participated in ultra-endurance events, and regularly trains in harsh environments to prepare both mentally and physically. Additionally, she places great importance on recovery, incorporating ice baths, proper rest, and a strict nutrition plan to maintain her peak performance.

Key Achievements and Competitions

2013 CrossFit Games Champion

Samantha’s win at the 2013 CrossFit Games remains the pinnacle of her career. This victory was a breakthrough moment not just for her, but for international athletes in the sport, as she became one of the few non-Americans to claim the title.

European Regionals

Samantha has consistently dominated the European Regionals, earning the top spot multiple times. Her performances at these events have been a key factor in her qualification for the CrossFit Games year after year.

CrossFit Open Competitions

In the CrossFit Open, a worldwide online competition that precedes the Games, Samantha regularly finishes among the top athletes. Her results in these competitions reflect her incredible consistency and commitment to staying at the top of her game, even as she faces new generations of competitors.

Masters Competitions

As Samantha transitioned to the Masters category, her performances continued to impress. Competing in the 35-39 age group, she has consistently placed at the top, demonstrating her ability to maintain a high level of fitness and competitiveness despite the increasing physical demands of aging.

Her influence reaches far beyond her own competitions, inspiring athletes to push their limits in all areas of life.

Conclusion

Her journey from firefighter to CrossFit Games Champion highlights her incredible physical abilities, mental resilience, and influence as a role model. As she continues to compete, coach, and mentor, her legacy in CrossFit will only grow stronger. Athletes worldwide can draw inspiration from her example, learning the value

The 2024 Olympia, scheduled for Oct. 11-13, 2024, in Las Vegas, NV, continues to see roster shakeups across several divisions. Most of these changes have come in the form of withdrawals, thus far, from Men’s Open competitors Nick Walker and Nathan De Asha and Men’s Physique athlete Diogo Montenegro.

Former Olympia champions Brandon Hendrickson, Jennifer Dorie, and Mamdouh “Big Ramy” Elssbiay are taking the 2024 Olympia off.

While more athletes have voiced their dismay or content for not competing, one athlete is set to surprise. Powerlifter turned pro bodybuilder Hunter Henderson will compete in the 2024 Ms. Olympia contest.

[Related: Best Pre-Workout Supplements]

Henderson has competed twice so far in 2024. She ranked second at the 2024 Chicago Pro and scored the gold at the 2024 Titans Grand Prix Pro. To qualify for the 2024 Olympia, athletes needed to win a pro show before the qualifying cutoff date of Sept. 15, 2024.

The 2024 Titans Grand Prix occurred one week after that cutoff, on Sept. 21, 2024. Therefore, Henderson’s win was believed to qualify her for the 2025 Olympia. However, BarBend confirmed that Henderson was in the athlete meeting for the 2024 contest in Las Vegas to compete in Women’s Bodybuilding — i.e., the Ms. Olympia contest.

[Related: Best Whey Protein Powders]

There was no word about how Henderson was slotted to compete, given the timing of her pro show win and the qualifying cutoff. At the time of this article’s publication, Olympia promoters have not announced that Henderson received a special invite to compete in 2024.

Regardless of the details surrounding Henderson’s last-minute entry, her presence on the Ms. Olympia stage certainly spices up the possibilities of that contest. Initially expected to be a battle primarily between defending Olympia champion Andrea Shaw and her number one contender, Angela Yeo, Henderson might bring a package strong enough to send shockwaves through Las Vegas.

The Science (Or Lack Thereof) Behind Chris Bumstead’s Olympia Physique

A wave of devotion to science-based training is sweeping the bodybuilding world. Athletes optimize every aspect of their training, diet, and sleep regimens, from exercise selection and technique to rep ranges and periodization, with an intensity that rivals their most demanding sets.

On Oct. 8, 2024, five-time and reigning Classic Physique Olympia champ Chris Bumstead criticized the conventional understanding of science-based hypertrophy training. He stressed the importance of mental resilience and intuitive training in sculpting an Olympia-worthy physique. Check it out below:

[Related: Intuitive Eating for Strength & Physique Athletes]

Bumstead argues that an excessive focus on technical perfection and overthinking can lead to mental fatigue, hindering an athlete’s ability to push their physical limits.

I’ve noticed that if you’re so focused on getting an absolute deep stretch with a four-second negative and perfect execution, it can be mentally fatiguing.

Bumstead contends that this hyperfocus on technicalities can become counterproductive, especially when fatigue sets in. Instead, Bumstead believes that when physical or mental fatigue sets in, it’s better not to overthink and go full-send.

If you are holding yourself back by thinking too much, then you’re not doing good enough.

Bumstead argues that even the perception of mental fatigue can be a significant barrier, preventing athletes from realizing their maximum potential. Athletes often underestimate their physical capabilities, especially when they feel mentally or physically drained. (1)

The Canadian bodybuilder admits that he feels completely exhausted on some days during a bodybuilding contest prep.

I’ll literally think, ‘I can’t even lift that can,’ but then I’ll go to the gym and dumbbell press 150-pound dumbbells.

Bumstead advises against overcomplicating training when it interferes with performance and increases overall fatigue. While intelligent training is essential, over-optimization can become detrimental to results. He trusts intuition and experience, particularly when fatigue and mental strain threaten to derail workouts.

I know what my body needs as I’ve been here for 10 years, and I can just feel it. I pick up a weight and know what I need to do.

GLP-1s Present $6.8B Opportunity for Gym Industry, Report Finds

As more Americans start to take GLP-1s and lose weight as a result, they should be more inclined to join gyms. But the fitness industry has some work to do to capitalize on the opportunity

For all the fitness industry’s growth as of late, the vast majority of Americans still don’t belong to a gym. GLP-1s might hold the key to changing that calculus.

The rise of GLP-1s as weight-loss drugs is just getting started, and experts believe increased adoption over the coming years can be a huge boon for the fitness industry, finally getting a bigger swath of the U.S. population into gyms and studios.

According to a new report from investment banking firm Harrison Co., the total addressable market for U.S. fitness clubs (including gyms and boutique studios) is expected to increase by $6.8 billion as a result of more people taking GLP-1s.

That’s an increase of around 20% from the fitness club industry’s current addressable market of $35 billion, the firm reports.

“I think it’s one of the biggest opportunities to come along for the industry in a long time,” Paul Byrne, a partner in Harrison Co.’s Fitness & VMS practice, tells Athletech News.

The Case for GLP-1s as a Gym Booster

The argument, which has been advanced by Byrne and other analysts, is that as more Americans start to take GLP-1s and lose weight as a result, they’ll be more inclined to want to join a gym.

For gyms across America, this would be good news, especially since the GLP-1 wave is just getting started.

Around 12% of Americans have taken GLP-1s at some point, and around 6% currently use the drugs. Those numbers are expected to increase significantly over the next few years as GLP-1s become more affordable thanks to more generic options and wider coverage from health insurance. JPMorgan estimates that the GLP-1 market will exceed $100 billion by 2030

While it’s too early to make a definitive judgment on whether the hypothesis advanced by Byrne and others will prove true, the early returns seem promising.

“Once people go on GLP-1s, the data shows that they’re much more likely to adhere to a (fitness) program,” Byrne says, citing data gathered by Harrison Co.

What’s more, people’s motivation for going to the gym tends to shift from extrinsic to intrinsic, meaning they become self-motivated to work out rather than chase external validation like acceptance from peers or potential dating partners.

“Once you flip into this intrinsic mode, you’re much more likely to go to the gym, and the data shows that you’re more likely to go more frequently,” Byrne notes.

Designing Gyms for GLP-1 Users

But the initial momentum of more people losing weight might not be enough to measurably increase gym membership numbers in the long run. The fitness industry likely needs to take deliberate steps to encourage GLP-1 users to stick to a workout regimen.

Americans are famously overweight. They’re also highly averse to stepping foot inside the gym.

Under 2o% of Americans currently own a gym membership. The fitness industry has long struggled to increase this figure. There’s even a term for these non-gym-goers in industry circles, the infamous “80%.”

“I’ve been in the fitness industry for over 40 years now, and I’ve been able to see the continued challenges we’ve had with breaking through the obesity epidemic,” Jeff Zwiefel, the director of Life Time’s Miora Performance & Longevity Clinic, tells ATN. “What we’ve been doing isn’t working. We’re not reaching the most at-risk people.”

Zwiefel believes GLP-1s can be gamechanger for the fitness industry, but only if operators around the country work to make people taking the drugs feel welcomed inside gyms by providing ongoing support that spans fitness, nutrition and overall wellness.

Essentially, gyms should position themselves as the link between medical practitioners who prescribe GLP-1s and the people who take them.

“We’re better-positioned than anybody to connect the dots for consumers,” Zwiefel says. “Who has better access to fitness professionals, equipment, nutrition programming and supplementation than gym operators?”

How can gyms do this? There are already a couple of examples, and some ideas for the future.

Under Zwiefel’s guidance, Life Time launched Miora in 2023. Miora is a comprehensive program that gives Life Time members access not just to GLP-1s, but to physicians, nurses assistants and personal trainers to ensure they’re getting personalized, expert advice on how to work out, eat and generally take care of their bodies while losing weight.

Luxury fitness brand Equinox has created a personal training program designed for its members who take GLP-1s, offering fitness and nutrition advice to help them form long-term, healthy habits around weight loss and fitness.

Democratizing Access to Weight-Loss Advice

So far, and perhaps unsurprisingly, high-end fitness brands are taking the lead when it comes to designing programs that support GLP-1 users.

It may be unfeasible for gyms on the lower end of the pricing spectrum to offer their members the type of white-glove service found at Life Time. But that doesn’t mean these brands have to sit on the sidelines.

“There are other ways to access these customers without having doctors and nurses on staff,” Byrne believes.

The Harrison Co. partner says high-value, low-price (HVLP) gyms can look to partner with local doctors’ offices who are prescribing GLP-1s, working together with physicians to develop training programs that best support the fitness needs of people on weight-loss drugs. Those programs would undoubtedly include a healthy dose of strength training, which is important in helping people preserve muscle mass while dropping weight.

Gyms can also design digital programs that introduce GLP-1 users to the fundamentals of working out. This is especially useful since many people on GLP-1s have never attended a gym.

“If you have an app that’s specifically targeted to GLP-1 users, you kind of get over the hurdle of intimidation,” Byrne says.

Zwiefel, meanwhile, is aware that most brands can’t offer a Miora type of program. But he wants to see industry leaders work collectively to educate fitness professionals on how to coach clients who take GLP-1s. This expertise will funnel down to gym-goers, whether they attend Planet Fitness or Life Time.

“I would encourage operators to make sure they have foundational certification expectations,” he says. “I want to work with the industry to ensure there’s an accredited certification so that pros can gain this (knowledge).”

Right now, much of the talk around GLP-1s and fitness is highly speculative. But the ball appears to be in gym operators’ court when it comes to harnessing the power of weight-loss drugs to get more Americans working out.

“I think it’s going to be a massive game-changer and a tremendous tailwind for the industry,” Zwiefel says of the increased adoption of GLP-1s . “But it’s like any tool, it can be used wrong and abused, and it can be used right.”

Fitness and Wellness a Hot Topic on Nasdaq TradeTalks

The fitness and wellness industry is on the upswing — but what’s next? Here’s what leading thought leaders and market anaylsts say

A recent roundtable aired this week on Nasdaq TradeTalks, with leading analysts and thought leaders discussing the growth and deal activity in the connected health and wellness solutions market.

“It’s a really exciting space,” Athletech Media Group founder and CEO Ed Hertzman said. “One of the difficulties is that it’s an extremely fragmented market, but at a macro level, without question, you see more and more consumers are interested in this. There are more and more modalities and retail locations available to the consumer — the wearable market is trending up, wellness is trending up. All in all, I think there’s a lot of positive activity happening, and we’re going to see a lot of investment moving forward into this space.”

Max Rakhlenko, TD Cowen’s director of Hardlines & Wellness, added that he projects an omnichannel experience, combining the in-gym experience with at-home fitness.

“Those two are going to continue to blend together,” Rakhlenko said, adding that he sees a future that includes wellness within the traditional gym space. He also pointed out the positive impact of social drivers, gamification and Gen Z’s interest in living a healthy lifestyle.

The discussion also touched on the impact of GLP-1s on the fitness and wellness industry.

credit: Nasdaq TradeTalks

“When I first started covering the health and fitness space, one of the primary reasons that people didn’t go to the gym was they felt like they had to work out to go to the gym,” said Hugh Paisley, managing director at RBC Capital Markets. “And that stereotype has [changed] by models like Planet Fitness, Crunch Fitness. Now with GLP-1s, it just accelerates that process. There’s still people that are sitting on the sidelines, and now they’re getting more involved.”

Jon Canarick, Managing Partner of North Castle Partners, noted the evolution of the home fitness trend, which he said spurred the growth of wellness products, recovery products and wearables. Advertising has also changed its approach, no longer targeting just athletes but a broader audience.

“It’s working quite well,” he said, using Therabody as an example of a recovery and wellness tech company that now appeals to a wider segment of wellness seekers, including those on their feet all day, such as nurses and UPS drivers.
