Past Champions

A new champion for this division is guaranteed because 2023 Olympia winner Jennifer Dorie will not compete in the 2024 contest. That leaves four previous winners in the lineup:

2022 winner Maureen Blanquisco

2019 champion and 2024 Texas Pro winner Elisa Pecini

Two-time champion Angelica Teixeira

Ashley Kaltwasser — most Olympia wins (three) and pro victories overall across all divisions (49)

[Related: 2024 Women’s Physique Olympia Preview]

With Dorie out, conventional wisdom makes Blanquisco the favorite to reclaim the crown. She was second to Dorie in 2023 and is poised to be a front-runner in 2024. However, Kaltwasser ranked third and has been pushing for 50 pro wins. She has six wins in 2024.

Pecini has been a perennial top-10 finisher but has not placed above fifth since she won the title in 2019. After an extended absence, Teixeira returned to the stage at the 2024 Arnold Classic. This will be her first Olympia appearance since she finished fourth in 2020.

Top Contenders

Many fans are talking about Aimee Leann Delgado, who won four pro shows in 2024 and ranked sixth in the 2023 Bikini Olympia to become the new Olympia champion. With another year of experience gained and Dorie out, Delgado could push for the top.

Three-time Bikini International champion Lauralie Chapados will stand in her way. Chapados beat Delgado for her third Arnold Classic in 2024 in Columbus, OH. Chapados placed as high as second at the Olympia in 2021 behind Dorie. This could be as good of a chance as Chapados has of finally winning the one title that has eluded her.

Dark Horses

The other top 10 finalists from 2023 returning in 2024 include the Ariana Brothers (seventh), Ashlyn Little (eighth), and Jourdanne Lee (10th). If the favorites do not arrive in their best shape, they could break into the top six.

Other Notes

Pre-judging for this competition will occur on the Olympia Expo stage at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The top 10 from that round will move on to the finals in Resorts World later that evening.

Fans who won’t be in Las Vegas can watch both rounds of competition for all 11 contests by purchasing the 2024 Olympia pay-per-view on the Olympia Productions website.

BarBend will share updates for all pro divisions, as well as developments leading to the big weekend in Las Vegas.

How to Qualify

Past champions are automatically qualified within five years of their last Olympia win. Former winners beyond five years are eligible but must obtain permission from the IFBB Pro League to enter.

The top three finishers from the previous year’s Olympia are also locked into next year’s contest. The rest of the field comprises show winners during the qualifying season. The only other path to the stage is by special invite, and none are expected to be issued by the promoters in 2024.

Past Champion

The only past winner in this lineup is seven-time champion and defending titleholder Cydney Gillon. She has been the most dominant champion of any division in recent years, and it appears no one will derail her momentum in 2024.

Gillon is considered the strong favorite to win her eighth Olympia in Las Vegas. If she does, she will extend her record for the most wins in this division and tie Lenda MurrayRonnie Coleman, and Lee Haney for the second-most Olympia wins in any division. Iris Kyle holds the record with 10 Ms. Olympia titles.

Top Contenders

If someone dethrones Gillon, they would be the eighth champion in the contest’s 21-year history. Jessica Reyes Padilla has finished second to Gillon in the last two Olympias and won three pro contests in 2024, most recently the 2024 Arizona Pro. The 2023 Masters Olympia champion is considered the one who could take advantage of the opportunity if Gillon happened to be off her game during pre-judging.

Lola Montez was third in the 2023 Olympia and will likely join Gillon and Padilla in the first callout. Thanks to her bronze medal at the 2023 Olympia, Montez was not required to compete in 2024. She could show significant improvement at this show.

Dark Horses

The division has multiple rising stars who could potentially impact the final standings. Cherish Richardson was fourth at the 2023 Olympia and won the 2024 Chicago Pro and 2024 Lenda Murray Atlanta Pro shows to secure her spot in the 2024 Olympia.

Natalia Soltero rounded out the top five from the 2023 Figure Olympia and placed first in the 2024 Pittsburgh Pro. She won the 2024 Daytona Pro, which also qualified her for the 2025 Olympia. She placed second to Gillon in 2020 and 2021.

Other Notes

Both rounds of this contest and all 11 pro shows in Las Vegas will be streamed live on the 2024 Olympia pay-per-view, available for purchase at the Olympia Productions website.

BarBend will provide updates for every contest and placing in the Olympia throughout the weekend. Stay tuned for the latest news and developments leading up to the big weekend in Sin City.

212 Winner — Giuseppe Zagarella

The 2024 Toronto Pro Supershow winner scored the first 2025 212 Olympia qualification thanks to a perfect score from the judges. The pre-judging round was the only scored round.

Zagarella was already in the final stages of prep for the 2024 212 Olympia in Las Vegas, NV, on Oct. 11-12, 2024, but this win allows him to take an extended offseason heading into 2025.

Figure Winner — Adela Ondrejovicova

Ondrejovicova was already qualified for the 2025 Figure Olympia thanks to her victory at the 2024 AGP Pro All Stars contest in Gyeonggi State, South Korea. Only pro show winners who have not previously qualified for the 2025 Olympia can earn a roster spot on that stage. The champion also earned a perfect score on the scorecards.

Wellness Winner — Alicia Romero

This was Romero’s pro debut, first pro win, and first Olympia qualification. Nerilde Garcia Strey looked to be in winning contention during comparisons, but the judges unanimously favored Romero for this contest.

HFA’s 2024 Global Report Spotlights Emerging Fitness Markets

Japan & Saudi Arabia are two areas to watch, as fitness brands like The Bar Method, Pure Barre, YogaSix, and GymNation see massive potential

It’s not just the U.S. that is pivoting towards health and fitness, according to the Health and Fitness Association’s (HFA) 2024 Global Report. In the last year, the U.K., Japan, and Spain have enjoyed record membership numbers and penetration rates, underscoring the optimism of the global health and fitness industry.

The report is comprehensive, but here are a few noteworthy takeaways from the 2024 HFA Global Report.

Credit: HFA

Japan Welcomes Boutique Fitness Brands

For 2023, Japan’s penetration rate reached 4.5% (approximately 5.6 million members) and a 21.4% increase from the year prior — a strong indicator that there’s a strong demand and commitment to fitness that is likely to continue, according to HFA.

Boutique brands have identified Japan as ripe with potential. The Bar Method, which was acquired by Self Esteem Brands in 2019 and offers the ultimate trifecta of yoga, Pilates and strength training, is opening its first Tokyo studios early next year following an agreement with Fast Fitness Japan (FFJ), which acquired the master franchise rights to the Barre brand.

“We are excited to introduce this exceptional exercise program to a wider audience in Japan, particularly women, to increase Japan’s fitness participation rate and promote the adoption and establishment of exercise habits,” said FFJ CEO Kio Yamabe of the deal. “We are confident that this will be an exciting fitness experience for the Japanese people.”

Boutique fitness and wellness franchisor Xponential Fitness is also making moves in Japan, with at least 50 Pure Barre and YogaSix studios expected to open following a master franchise agreement with Sunpark Co. Ltd., a StretchLab master franchisee and franchisor of restaurants, entertainment concepts, and fitness centers.

Saudi Arabia Emerges as Fertile Fitness Ground

In the Middle East — specifically Saudi Arabia — the penetration rate may be below 7%, but the HFA indicates growth potential, considering 74% of the fitness market consists of independent gyms and 26% is comprised of fitness chains. The report highlights that women-only gyms offer untapped potential, with 25% of women reporting a lack of nearby fitness centers.

While The Bar Method plans to head to Japan, the brand could potentially be a big hit in Saudi Arabia as well, according to Sander van den Born, executive vice president of international for Self Esteem Brands. In an interview earlier this year with Athletech News, he noted the changing landscape in the region.

“The females in the GCC (in particular, Saudi Arabia) there’s been quite an evaluation in the way they’re being seen in the community,” Born explained. “They can drive now. They have far more freedom than they used to have. They go out and are interested in sports, health and wellness. So we do feel that some of our offerings (especially The Bar Method) are very suitable for the female population in Saudi Arabia.”

GymNation, a well-known affordable GCC fitness chain, announced record-breaking demand ahead of its first six clubs in Saudi Arabia this summer, with over 120,000 people registering to show their interest and 12,000 memberships selling out in under 72 hours, setting a new pre-opening sales record in the Middle East.

“Selling such a high number of memberships in just three days highlights the strong demand and interest among citizens and residents to enhance their physical and mental health across the Kingdom,” GymNation’s founder and CEO Loren Holland said.

Holland added that the pipeline for new GymNation locations throughout Saudi Arabia is “exceptionally strong.”

“With support from our investment partners Tricap Investments and Ruya Partners, we anticipate a period of significant growth,” Holland added.

HVLP Gyms Head Overseas

While Japan and Saudi Arabia are expected to see immense growth, the HFA paints an overall rosy picture for the future of the fitness industry. The majority of club and studio operators (86.8%) expect membership growth in 2024, with over two-thirds expecting increases of over 5%. Similarly, 92.6% of operators project revenue growth.

High-value, low-priced gym operators Crunch Fitness and Planet Fitness are also planning to expand internationally. Crunch Fitness onboarded former Xponential Fitness chief international development officer John Kersh this past spring to drive domestic and international growth.

As for Planet Fitness, the big box gym giant opened its first European club in Barcelona this summer. The first several Planet Fitness locations will be a joint venture with a franchisee partner, while the remainder will be franchised, according to the gym brand.

“We see strong growth potential in Spain and are working tirelessly to build a solid, long-term foundation within the country,” said Vicente Bañobre, who is overseeing Planet’s expansion in Spain. “We’re thrilled to offer an affordable fitness solution and best-in-class member experience to the Sabadell community.”

Classic Physique Winner — Damien Patrick

This is the first time Patrick has competed in 2024. He was already prepping for the 2024 Classic Physique Olympia in Las Vegas, NV, on Oct. 11-12, 2024. This gave him some momentum going into this year’s Olympia. After he competes in Las Vegas, he can take an extended offseason to prepare for the 2025 Olympia.

Bikini Division Winner — Ashley Hampton

Hampton won the 2024 San Antonio Pro in San Antonio, TX, on Sept. 14, 2024, qualifying her for the 2024 Bikini Olympia. This is her second consecutive pro show victory; she earned it with a perfect score.

Winner — Jefferson Lima

This was considered an upset since Lima had not been onstage throughout the year and ranked 14th in his most recent contest, the 2023 Musclecontest Bahia Pro. Lima won with perfect scorecards from the judges. This is Lima’s first win and Olympia qualification.

This win allows Lima to wait for the 2025 Olympia to compete or attempt to block other athletes’ qualifications by winning additional pro shows. Only pro show winners qualify for the 2025 Olympia.

Second Place — Lucas Lage

Lage was the early favorite of the experts going into this show because of his second-place finish at the 2024 Musclecontest Rio Pro on Sept. 28, 2024. This is his second straight runner-up finish, so he still seeks his first win in the pro ranks.

Third Place — William Aguiar Amorim

A former Classic Physique pro, Amorim transitioned to Men’s Physique for this contest. He may have found his new division because this was his highest placing in the pro ranks yet.

Other Notes

There was a second Men’s Physique show taking place on this particular weekend. The Koloseum Pro was held in Milan, Italy, and Alessandro Cavagnola won. He qualified for the 2025 Olympia as a result.

There are no 2025 qualifying shows on the weekend of Oct. 11-12, 2024, because the 2024 Men’s Physique Olympia will be held in Las Vegas, NV, as part of the 2024 Olympia.

Classic Physique Winner — Andrea Mammoli

Mammoli put the division on notice that he was coming up the ranks after placing second at the 2024 Tsunami Nutrition Showdown Pro in Metz, France, on Sept. 28, 2024. He looked improved enough to earn a perfect score from the judges. This is his first win and Olympia qualification.

Men’s Physique Winner — Alessandro Cavagnola

Cavagnola is preparing to enter the 2024 Men’s Physique Olympia in Las Vegas, NV, on the weekend of Oct. 11-12, 2024, but this win gave him some momentum going into that contest. If he chooses to take it, it could also earn him an extended offseason after the 2024 Olympia to focus on 2025. He earned a perfect score from the judges.

Bikini Winner — Jess Feeney

Feeney scored her first pro win and Bikini Olympia qualification. The judges often compared her to runner-up Kerry Sexton, but the Ireland native came out on top.

Feeney could wait until the 2025 Olympia or keep competing and try to block qualifications—they don’t hand down if an already-Olympia-qualified athlete wins a pro show.

Mitchell Hooper Issues Deadlift Challenge to Hafthor Bjornsson

“This isn’t clickbait,” said Mitchell Hooper moments before issuing a deadlift challenge to 2018 World’s Strongest Man (WSM) champion Hafthor Björnsson.

Hooper, hot off a recent win at the 2024 Strongest Man on Earth competition and 2024 USA Strongman Championships, believes he can beat Björnsson to set a new all-time deadlift world record.

“I’m formally requesting to be involved in any event that Thor goes to,” Hooper continued on Oct. 2, 2024. Hooper has his eyes on a new all-time strongman deadlift record — the mythical 505 kilograms (1,113 pounds), that has thus far eluded the world’s top pullers.

Can Hooper Topple the Mountain?

Last September, Björnsson, who hadn’t made a run in strongman since his retirement in 2020, announced a surprising comeback to the sport.

While competitive strongman evolved since Björnsson’s departure — a power vacuum that relative newcomer Hooper has capitalized on — the Icelandic native has done well so far:

2024 Arnold Strongman Classic: Fourth Place

2024 Strongman Champions League: First Place

2024 Arnold Pro Strongman World Series: Second Place

2024 Iceland’s Strongest Man: First Place

Medal Cabinet: Björnsson’s victory at the 2024 Iceland’s Strongest Man in August marked his 11th consecutive title in that contest since 2011, though he did not participate in 2021, 2022, or 2023.

Most relevant, Björnsson earned second place at the 2024 Strongest Man on Earth competition behind Hooper. As the competitive strongman season winds down, both athletes have their eyes on the same prize.

“I think I’m a worthy candidate,” Hooper continued on social media. To build his case, Hooper cited several strong deadlift performances he’s had over the past few months.

“Despite my training and nutrition being chaotic, I believe I had the closest attempt at 505 kilograms of anyone, ever,” Hooper remarked of his performance in Event 1 of the 2024 Giants Live World Deadlift Championships in Las Vegas. “I got it to my knees, without a preparatory cycle.”

The Moose vs. The Mountain

I will not avoid any show, any competitor, or any lift,” Hooper proudly declared. Björnsson’s resurgence in competitive strongman seems to have lit a fire under Hooper — that, or he just loves a good strongman showdown as much as we do.

Hooper and Björnsson will collide in Aberdeen, Scotland, at the 2024 Rogue Strongman Invitational on Nov. 8-10, 2024. Hooper is the defending champion, and Event 1 is a one-rep max raw deadlift.

MyFitnessPal White Paper Explores Link Between Nutrition and Mood

Using comfort foods as a quick fix can have long-term effects on mood and well-being, according to a new paper from the nutrition and food tracking app and Dr. Taitz

Experiencing complex emotions can trigger a tendency to reach for less nutrient-dense foods, according to a new white paper, “Food + Mood,” authored by MyFitnessPal and Dr. Jenny L. Taitz, Psy.D.

The global nutrition and food tracking app, along with Dr. Taitz—assistant clinical professor in psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles, and author of “Stress Resets: How to Soothe Your Body and Mind in Minutes” and “End Emotional Eating: Using Dialectical Behavior Therapy to Cope with Difficult Emotions and Develop a Healthy Relationship with Food” — set out to explore the science behind how nutrition affects mood and coping strategies.

“In analyzing the results of nutritional research tied to mood, it’s clear that our mood drives our eating, and our eating drives our mood,” Dr. Taitz said. “Many people turn to highly palatable foods for a quick fix, only to face long-term repercussions on their emotional well-being.”

One valuable technique to help support emotional well-being, Dr. Taitz advises, is food tracking.

“Using a food and nutrition tracking tool like MyFitnessPal may help empower a shift from mindless eating to mindful choices that support our health goals,” she continued.

Credit: MyFitnessPal

While many people have drowned their sorrows in a pint of ice cream, the white paper reveals the long-term effects of such choices on mood and emotional well-being.

The paper also aims at the average American diet, which MyFitnessPal and Dr. Taitz note may not support holistic wellness goals, as it often contains nearly double the recommended daily limit of added sugar. A study published earlier this year found that a diet high in sugar is linked to a higher prevalence of depression, while a Mediterranean diet may lower the risk of depression.

Although some people cope with stress by overeating, others may eat less, resulting in increased feelings of tension, anger, and fatigue. The white paper highlights that nutrients such as B12, folate, and zinc play crucial roles in maintaining emotional balance, while deficiencies in these nutrients may increase irritability and depression.

Dr. Taitz and MyFitnessPal suggest viewing food choices as opportunities for long-term well-being instead of immediate comfort can be helpful. Other strategies – such as meal prepping, resisting the urge to eat “comfort foods” and allowing the feeling to pass, practicing meditation and positive self-talk, and identifying triggers to chart a better course, can also be solutions that support health and well-being.

“At MyFitnessPal, we’ve always seen tracking as a tool for gaining insight on overall nutrition intake and for supporting small behavioral shifts that can add up to big, more sustainable change,” said Melissa Jaeger, head of nutrition for MyFitnessPal and registered dietician. “In reviewing the analysis, the connection between food and mood is clear, and it’s our priority to support members with their health through nutrition tracking to bring awareness to the foods impacting their overall goals.”

In September, MyFitnessPal became the nutrition tracking app of the Philadelphia Eagles — a multi-year collaboration that will serve as a tool for the NFL players.
