Whether you’re looking for fitness tips, motivation, or insight into his personal growth, Alec’s story offers powerful lessons for everyone. Ready to discover what keeps him going?

2. Early Life and Introduction to Fitness

Alec’s athletic journey began at a young age, with a deep involvement in sports such as gymnastics and swimming. These early activities honed his physical abilities, giving him a foundation in flexibility, strength, and coordination. Gymnastics, in particular, played a crucial role in shaping Alec’s body awareness, which would later benefit him in the demanding world of CrossFit.

His first steps into fitness came as a way to build confidence and strength. Like many, Alec faced personal struggles growing up, which included mental hurdles that he overcame through sports. These experiences not only built his physical strength but also instilled in him resilience, laying the groundwork for his future as a CrossFit athlete.

3. Transition to CrossFit

Alec was introduced to CrossFit through his older brother, Ben Smith, a well-known CrossFit Games champion. Watching his brother succeed sparked Alec’s curiosity, leading him to try the sport for himself. Initially, Alec found CrossFit challenging, especially the intensity and variety of the workouts, which were far different from his previous sports experience.

His early CrossFit competitions were marked by a steep learning curve. Despite setbacks and the physical demands of the sport, Alec persevered. These early experiences helped him develop a competitive edge, and he began to thrive in the fast-paced and community-driven CrossFit environment. His love for the sport grew quickly, and soon Alec was competing at a higher level.

4. Rise in the Competitive CrossFit Scene

Alec’s rise in the CrossFit world was fueled by key milestones. His breakthrough came when he qualified for the CrossFit Games, a significant achievement for any CrossFit athlete. Competing at this level placed him among the world’s best, and Alec seized the opportunity to showcase his skills.

Notable competitions where Alec excelled included his performances at regional and national CrossFit events. Over time, he set personal records in events like the snatch, clean and jerk, and gymnastics-based movements, showcasing his versatility as an athlete. His standout moments, including overcoming challenging WODs (Workouts of the Day), made him a fan favorite in the community.

Alec’s success can be attributed to his rigorous training regimen. His daily workouts focus on strength, conditioning, and skill-based drills, all tailored to the demands of CrossFit. His coaches and mentors within the community have also played a vital role, guiding him through difficult phases and helping refine his techniques. Alec’s commitment to the sport, coupled with unique training methods such as gymnastics-based mobility work, set him apart from other athletes.

5. Overcoming Injuries and Setbacks

Like many top-tier athletes, Alec Smith has faced his fair share of injuries. Intense CrossFit training comes with risks, and Alec has endured injuries that forced him to take breaks from competition. Among the most notable setbacks were shoulder injuries sustained during heavy lifting sessions and competitions.

Despite these challenges, Alec’s approach to recovery has been disciplined and strategic. He works closely with physical therapists to ensure a smooth rehabilitation process, focusing on rebuilding strength while preventing further injury. Mentally, Alec adopted a resilient mindset, viewing each setback as an opportunity to grow stronger. His ability to bounce back, often returning to competition in better form than before, is a testament to his mental fortitude.

Alec’s comeback stories, particularly after significant injuries, have inspired many within the fitness community. His ability to maintain focus, stay positive, and persevere through difficult periods has cemented his reputation as a determined and dedicated athlete.

6. Transition from Athlete to Coach and Fitness Influencer

While Alec’s competitive career remains impressive, his transition into coaching and fitness influencing has broadened his impact. He began coaching to help others reach their fitness goals, combining his knowledge of CrossFit with a deep understanding of movement and technique.

Alec’s coaching style emphasizes consistency, technique, and mindset. He believes that mastering the basics is crucial before progressing to more advanced skills. His philosophy centers on the idea that fitness is a long-term journey, and success comes from dedication and perseverance over time. Alec’s holistic approach encourages athletes to focus on mental well-being and resilience, just as much as physical strength.

As a fitness influencer, Alec has built a substantial following on platforms like Instagram and YouTube, where he shares workout tips, behind-the-scenes glimpses into his training, and personal stories. His content creation strategy revolves around authenticity—showing both the highs and lows of his journey. Alec’s engagement with his followers is genuine, often responding to questions, offering advice, and motivating others through his experiences.

7. Personal Approach to Fitness and Life Balance

Alec’s personal approach to fitness goes beyond just physical performance. He advocates for a holistic balance of physical, mental, and emotional health. While his workouts are intense, Alec prioritizes recovery, mindfulness, and nutrition as essential components of his overall well-being.

Incorporating mindfulness practices into his routine, Alec has been open about his struggles with mental health. By sharing his experiences with anxiety and self-doubt, he has shed light on the importance of mental health in the fitness community. His openness has encouraged others to take care of their mental well-being alongside their physical training.

Nutrition plays a significant role in Alec’s fitness philosophy. He follows a well-balanced diet, focusing on nutrient-dense foods that support recovery and performance. Coupled with proper sleep and regular recovery practices like stretching and mobility work, Alec’s fitness routine is a reflection of his belief in long-term health, not just short-term gains.

8. Alec Smith and the LGBTQ+ Community

In 2019, Alec publicly came out as gay, a decision that had a profound impact on his personal life and career. His coming out journey was met with overwhelming support, both within the CrossFit community and from his social media followers. This milestone made Alec a role model for inclusivity, particularly in a sport often perceived as hyper-masculine.

By being open about his sexuality, Alec has broken barriers and challenged stereotypes in both CrossFit and the broader fitness industry. His presence as a high-profile LGBTQ+ athlete has paved the way for greater acceptance and visibility in sports, inspiring others to embrace their true selves.

Alec is also an advocate for diversity and inclusivity in fitness. Through his platform, he promotes LGBTQ+ visibility, encouraging everyone—regardless of background or identity—to find their place in the fitness world. His advocacy work continues to make a positive impact, fostering a more inclusive community in both CrossFit and the fitness industry at large.

9. Current Projects and Future Goals

Alec’s career continues to evolve, with several exciting projects in the works. He has launched training programs that cater to both CrossFit athletes and general fitness enthusiasts, providing personalized coaching through online platforms. Additionally, Alec has partnered with fitness brands to promote products that align with his philosophy of health and wellness.

Looking to the future, Alec aims to expand his reach as both a coach and influencer. He envisions growing his online presence, creating more content that highlights fitness, mindfulness, and inclusivity. Beyond the gym, Alec is also focused on personal growth, seeking new ways to inspire and help others on their fitness journeys.

In the coming years, Alec’s goals include further business ventures, continued advocacy for LGBTQ+ inclusion, and perhaps stepping into new roles within the fitness industry. His long-term vision encompasses not only personal success but also the desire to make a lasting, positive impact on the fitness community.

10. Alec Smith’s Impact on Fitness

Alec Smith’s influence on the fitness world extends beyond his athletic achievements. As both an athlete and advocate for inclusivity, he has inspired countless individuals to pursue fitness while staying true to themselves. His journey of resilience, authenticity, and growth offers valuable lessons for anyone striving to overcome challenges in their personal or professional life.

Alec’s legacy in CrossFit and fitness is one of breaking barriers, not just physically, but also socially and emotionally. His openness about mental health, his role in the LGBTQ+ community, and his dedication to helping others achieve their goals have made him a respected and admired figure in fitness. For Alec, the journey is far from over, and his continued efforts to motivate and inspire others will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact for years to come.

Mark Mastrov, a Fitness Industry Legend, Honored for Storied Career

The founder of 24 Hour Fitness, Mastrov is one of the pioneers of the modern gym movement. He also helped create an organization that’s raised over $100 million for ALS research

Many people at the top are hated. Or at the very least they divide opinion. That isn’t the case for Mark Mastrov, one of the fitness industry’s most highly respected and well-liked figures.

You’d be hard-pressed to find someone in the industry with a bad word to say about Mastrov, who founded 24 Hour Fitness in the 1980s and turned it into one of the world’s largest and most successful gym chains upon his exit from the brand in 2008.

Mastrov will be honored with the first-ever Augie Nieto Fitness Legacy Award at this year’s Augie’s Quest BASH fundraiser, to be held October 22nd at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas as part of the 12th annual Fitness Technology Summit.

The award is more than deserved, both for Mastrov’s achievements in the fitness industry and for the integral role he played in the creation of Augie’s Quest to Cure ALS, a nonprofit organization that’s raised over $100 million for ALS research in the name of the late Augie Nieto, the founder of Life Fitness who passed away in 2023 after an 18-year battle with ALS.

BASH Is Born

Shortly after Nieto was diagnosed in 2005, Mastrov convinced his longtime friend and industry colleague to team up with him to create the first-ever BASH event, which raised $2.4 million for ALS research and set the stage for many millions more to come.

Mastrov tells Athletech News he got the idea for an ALS fundraiser after being put off by the somber tone of an event honoring Nieto right after the Life Fitness founder was diagnosed.

“I sat at the table with him, and as everybody came up and talked about Augie that night, they all talked as if he wasn’t going to be here very long,” Mastrov tells ATN. “It was kind of like a send-off night, and it just struck me as not appropriate and not the right way to look at it.”

A couple of days after that event, Mastrov called Nieto to arrange a meeting at Nieto’s house that would forever change the course of ALS fundraising. There, Mastrov told Nieto of his plan for a charity event to be held at the fitness industry’s annual IHRSA trade show, one that would be more optimistic in outlook.

“Augie is a hard-charging, super-high-intellect winner,” Mastrov says of his mindset at the time. “I just felt like if he got behind it with his name, his energy and his connectivity, he would help raise awareness and capital.”

It wasn’t a hard sell. Nieto agreed, and the pair got IHRSA’s leadership on board to stage the fundraising event at that year’s trade show in 2006.

“We created the BASH and we invited the whole industry to come and raise awareness around ALS. We sold tables, had auctions, all kinds of cool stuff,” Mastrov recalls. “We raised north of a couple of million bucks on the opening night – I was able to convince Lance Armstrong, who at the time was one of the highest-profile athletes in the world and is a cancer survivor, to come.”

The inaugural BASH event also featured the late Robin Williams, who delivered a very funny recorded speech to introduce Armstrong to the crowd, as well as Bob Saget, who stayed in touch with Nieto until Saget’s death in 2022.

BASH then became an annual event, raising over $18 million for ALS research between 2006 and 2019 (the pandemic caused the 2020 edition to be canceled, although the event is now back in full force).

The birth of BASH helped encourage various industry fundraising efforts – Orangetheory Fitness leads the way with over $10 million raised for ALS. Zumba and Newtown Athletic Club have each raised over $1 million, while Life Time, LA Fitness, The Atlantic Club (now part of Genesis), Bay Club, Crunch Fitness, CR Fitness and Life Fitness have all raised over $500,000.

This year, the fitness industry is projected to raise over $1 million for ALS research as it continues the fight started by Nieto and Mastrov in 2005 and carried on today by Lynne Nieto, Augie’s wife, Shannon Shryne, who together lead Augie’s Quest, which stages BASH and other philanthropic initiatives. Gretchen Simoneaux, Kelly Campbell, Angel Moser and Kelsey Storter also play key leadership roles.

As of today, Augie’s Quest has raised over $100 million for ALS research. Together with its research partner, the ALS Therapy Development Institute, that number grows to over $200 million, funding critical science that may one day help bring an end to the disease.

“They’ve done phenomenal work,” Mastrov says of Lynne Nieto and Shryne’s stewardship of the organization. “I honestly believe that, with all the breakthroughs in medicine and things that are going on in the world, we’re going to find a way to cure this terrible disease.”

The Ultimate ‘Point Guard’: A Look Back at Mastrov’s Career

Mastrov’s role in creating the BASH fundraiser would be reason enough to honor him with a Fitness Legacy award. But his impact goes further still: Mastrov is one of the pioneers of the modern gym movement and one of the fitness industry’s most influential people.

Mastrov got into the gym business in 1983 at 22 years old, borrowing $15,000 from his grandmother to become co-owner of a California gym he’d been working at part-time. Over the next two decades, Mastrov grew that single location into an empire, expanding 24 Hour Fitness across the country, then across the globe. In 2005, Mastrov sold 24 Hour Fitness in a deal worth over $1.6 billion, a watershed moment for the fitness industry, showing that gym chains could become billion-dollar businesses.

After staying on for a few years in an advisory role, Mastrov left 24 Hour Fitness for good in 2008. He then began investing in and advising brands including Crunch Fitness and UFC Gym, two of the fastest-growing brands in fitness today.

Perhaps even more importantly, Mastrov has influenced the careers of many of the industry’s current-day leaders: barre3 founder and CEO Sadie Lincoln, Crunch CEO Jim Rowley and UFC Gym CEO Adam Sedlack, among others, are all former 24 Hour Fitness employees.

These executives are quick to sing Mastrov’s praises, both for the impact he’s had on the industry as a whole and on them personally (see below for some industry leader’s thoughts on Mastrov’s impact).

But for all his fame within industry circles, there isn’t much written online about Mastrov, who was once a co-owner of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings. It’s fairly surprising for such a successful business person to be able to keep such a low profile. That’s an intentional move on Mastrov’s part.

“I’m not a publicity-seeking, high-profile person. I don’t really care about that stuff,” he says. “I’m very much team-oriented. I believe in the pyramids being upside down. I work for you, you don’t work for me.”

credit: Augie’s Quest

In terms of his leadership philosophy as an executive, Mastrov owes a lot to his basketball days.

“I look at the world through the eyes of a point guard,” he says. ”I’ve always looked at myself as the person that sets the table for everybody else, who gets them involved and lets them flourish on their own.”

Fighting for More

While Mastrov is still involved in the fitness industry as an investor and advisor, he’s no longer on the front lines. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have strong opinions on how the industry is doing.

At IHRSA 2024 last March, Mastrov gave a keynote where he called on industry leaders to work together to continue to fight for better recognition from lawmakers in Washington DC. Mastrov pointed to the infamous pandemic period where gyms were among the first businesses to be closed under government shutdown orders and among the last to be able to re-open, this despite exercise’s ability to help people ward off disease.

Speaking to ATN, Mastrov said he’d like to see the U.S. government implement tax incentives to encourage people to work out.

“I think we do a lot of good for society, and I think our industry has to continue to come together to push the message forward so that at some point, we can get government to step in and recognize that in a future pandemic, gyms need to stay open because they are the cure, not the cause,” he says.

Looking ahead, Mastrov is fairly bullish on the industry’s present and future. However, he notes large gym brands are facing challenges trying to keep membership prices down to a level consumers have come to expect while confronting rising labor, real estate and tax costs.

“To a certain extent, we’re at a crossroads,” he says. “We’ve got to figure out how we’re going to deal with the rising costs to operate and at the same time bring great service and product to our community.”

The challenges confronting the industry are real. But on October 22nd at least, the mood will be joyful, if bittersweet, as fitness leaders come together to honor Mastrov while continuing to remember his dear friend, Augie Nieto.

“I miss Augie, and love him,” Mastrov says. “He did phenomenal work – I don’t think anybody realizes what he went through and what he did for ALS. It’s an amazing story and he was a wonderful human being. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about that guy.”

Industry Leaders Reflect on Mastrov’s Impact

Below, Athletech News offers a collection of excerpts featuring some fitness industry leaders’ thoughts about Mastrov’s impact. This is just a small sample of the many executives, founders and leaders who have positive things to say about Mastrov.

“I am often asked what it’s like to work with or for Mark Mastrov, My answer is and has always been the same: it’s a privilege. From the beginning of my interaction with Mark some 25 years ago until now, he has always been humble and servant-minded whilst driving the business. His example for me to stay centered and focused while also maintaining life balance and driving teams towards success, but also doing so through building a strong community and causes around you, has always resonated. Mark deserves this honor as much as anyone and his impact on not only me but many others over the years is nothing short of Hall of Fame status. Thank you, Mark, for all that you do.”

Chris Smith, CEO of Fitness World and Chair of the Health & Fitness Association (formerly IHRSA)

“Mark has created countless opportunities for so many people. He has always provided a fair chance for individuals to excel, learn, grow, or even venture out on their own. Many who left went on to achieve remarkable careers and often cite their time with a Mastrov-backed company as the catalyst. Personally, it goes without saying: after years as an employee, Mark saw something in me and gave me the opportunity to become his partner. Professionally, it was the best thing that ever happened to me, and I could never fully express my gratitude for the chance he took on me.”

Jim Rowley, CEO, Crunch Fitness

“Mark Mastrov is a fitness industry icon. I have had the privilege to work with Mark for three decades. In each decade there were chapters of my personal and business journey, and in both cases, Mark showed a great example of being an icon at work and home. Depending on who you ask, there are so many unique examples of how he has impacted so many. My personal example is around his unparalleled ability to mentor and develop leaders. This focus on leadership development has profoundly influenced my own journey, encouraging me to take ownership of my personal growth while driving business aspirations. In a world where it is tricky to surround yourself with those who can positively impact your life, I am very fortunate to have Mark in my life.”

Adam Sedlack, CEO, UFC Gym

“When Augie Nieto got diagnosed with ALS, it was Mark who saw the vision for the entire industry to come together to support Augie and specifically, create funding for a cure. It was Mark who got even competitive fitness equipment companies to coalesce around Augie to fund the organization to pursue an independent research cure for ALS. It was Mark who continues to quietly support this direction after all of these years. And it is Mark to whom we all need to say “thank you” for your steadfast commitment to changing – and hopefully, saving – people’s lives”

Rick Caro, President of Management Vision, Inc., and founder, past president and director of IHRSA.

“If Augie were with us, I believe he’d describe Mark as the entrepreneur’s entrepreneur. Mark did for Augie’s Quest what he did for so many brands – really shared his vision and expertise to allow us to succeed and be relevant. We’re proud to be on the long list of people and organizations Mark inspired and supported.”

Shannon Shryne, Co-Founder & President, Augie’s Quest to Cure ALS

“Mark and I have been friends for over 25 years. Your friendship is truly defined when adversity happens. Mark was one of the first people to reach out. He has held my hand and helped me have the courage to dream of a day that ALS will be a treatable disease, not a death sentence.”

I Tried Dr. Frank Lipman’s Eleven Eleven Wellness Center

Dr. Lipman’s wellness center is focused on improving longevity through holistic and integrative medicine. But how does it compare to competitors?

Dr. Frank Lipman has made a name for himself in the world of longevity through his practice of integrative and functional medicine. A New York Times bestselling author of seven health-focused books, like The New Rules of Aging Well, Dr. Lipman has spent the past 40 years researching and exploring best practices for living longer, healthier lives.

He founded the Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in New York City and advises wellness companies like The Well and Hearty. Athletech News visited Eleven Eleven Wellness Center to try out its services, including an InBody Scan, Red Light Therapy, a One Mind Brain Mapping Program and Shiftwave.

Pros

Although I was new to preventative and integrative medicine, Dr. Lipman’s team made me feel comfortable going through each service in the wellness center. I started with the InBody Scan, which was a surprisingly in-depth view of my body composition. It uses Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis to measure the amount of body water by reading low-level currents. The scan itself involves standing on a scale-like device for several minutes while it takes your measurements.

Almost immediately, users receive an in-depth view into their body composition, including body fat, muscle mass and even water weight. The results that I received were so detailed that it even showed that my dominant leg had slightly more muscle mass than the other. The InBody Scan also provides a holistic view of your health; instead of merely encouraging weight loss, it also encourages weight gain if your body fat percentage is too low.

Next, I tried Eleven Eleven Wellness Center’s Right Light Therapy. Unlike some red light therapy services, it involved lying down in a machine, rather than standing between two panels. I found this experience much more comfortable than the alternative and felt rejuvenated after the services.

I then explored a new service called Shiftwave, a nervous system training technology that applies pulsed pressure waves to the body to rebalance the nervous system. Although I was unsure about the efficacy of the treatment after one use, I found myself in a deeper relaxation state after trying the guided meditation that syncs to the patterns and frequencies of pulsed pressure waves.

Lastly, I was brought to a quiet room where I underwent a brain scan. A dome-shaped device was tightly attached to my head, and I shut my eyes for the scanning process. The technology behind the tool is brain mapping or QEEG (Quantitative Electroenceophalogram), which maps brain activity. According to Dr. Lipman, it helps patients understand how your body responds to stimulus using HRV analytics and heart rhythm dynamics predicts anxiety, depression and stress levels. After a week or so, I received results that mapped my brain and predicted my levels of depression and anxiety.

After visiting many wellness centers for similar services, I found that the biggest benefit of Dr. Lipman’s office was having a medical perspective on-site. Instead of just a wellness center where one can seek out longevity-focused services like red light, cold plunges and nutritional consultations, Eleven Eleven feels more like a doctor’s office with the added benefit of these services woven into its practice.

Cons

Although I found the process enjoyable, I remain doubtful about the accuracy of the brain scan. Many medical studies have not found sufficient evidence to assess if such brain scans can provide an accurate report of anxiety levels and other cognitive disorders. Some of the claims on Dr. Lipman’s website also seemed a little too good to be true from the brain scan report, including improving clarity and decision-making, increasing speed of thought and awareness, and combating burnout. Before reserving judgment on the QEEG report, I would need additional scientific proof through studies.

Second, while I enjoyed the Shiftwave chair, I think there is more of an opportunity for those with acute anxiety or PTSD to find comfort in the chair, rather than using it as an everyday health service. However, if one were able to use it before sleep or during particularly stressful periods of time, it may help provide short-term relief through a meditative-like state with the pulsed pressure waves.

One downside of the services offered by Dr. Lipman’s office is their prices. For example, one ShiftWave session costs $50, as does one Red Light Therapy session. Other wellness centers offer services like Red Light Therapy for far less.

Overall, I was impressed by Eleven Eleven Wellness Center, which offers so many more services than the ones that I tried, including nutrition, sleep, stress management, and social connections. For those seeking to have a more holistic and preventative approach to their health, Eleven Eleven Wellness Center might be the perfect one-stop shop.

GoRuck and Birdwell Create Limited-Edition Capsule

The two American brands have joined forces to bring together a new GoRuck rucksack and Birdwell boardshorts

Two quintessential American brands, GoRuck and Birdwell, have partnered for a capsule collaboration. This limited-edition collection brings together GoRuck’s GR1 rucksack and Birdwell’s 300 boardshorts, fusing surfing and military culture.

GoRuck was founded by former Green Beret Jason McCarthy in 2008 and creates gear that can go from combat to everyday life. Birdwell, established in 1961 by Carrie Birdwell Mann, has been a staple for surfers, crafting popular boardshorts. Together, the brands have released the ultimate outdoor accessory and apparel collection.

Jason McCarthy, GoRuck’s founder, spoke about the synergies between the brands. “Toughness, quality, and functionality are the pillars of GoRuck products, and the GR1 was built to thrive in both Baghdad and NYC,” McCarthy said. “This collaboration with Birdwell highlights these shared values, creating gear that’s built to endure.”

At the heart of the collaboration is GoRuck’s GR1 rucksack, which has been customized using Birdwell’s tough SurfNyl fabric in a black camo design. SurfNy is water-repellent and quick-drying. The 26L GR1 Birdwell, made in the USA, is priced at $345 and comes with a co-branded patch.

Birdwell contributed its 300 boardshorts to the collection, accompanied by a special co-branded patch. Priced at $125, these board shorts are crafted from the same SurfNyl fabric, offering functionality in the water.

Birdwell CEO Eric Crane commented, “Birdwell is passionate about creating functional, high-quality beach styles that help people lead healthy lives. This collaboration with GoRuck upholds our shared value of keeping people active long-term by promoting exercise in and out of the water.”

GoRuck made waves earlier this year when it became CrossFit’s official apparel and footwear partner, replacing Nobull, which held the title between 2021 and 2023 after taking over for Reebok.

“Equinox members embody the same relentless drive that fuels ASRV — individuals who are passionate about fitness and demand top-tier quality in performance and style,” Barton said.

He launched the activewear company in 2017, telling WWD that the idea of womenswear had always lingered in the back of his mind, but he wanted to solidify the brand in the men’s category first. Slow and steady appears to have paid off; he told the publication that ASRV is on track to do between $30 million and $40 million in revenue this year, with the addition of a woman’s line projected to outperform the men’s line within two years.

World of Hyatt Members Rewarded for Peloton Workouts

Travelers can earn points for future bookings, upgrades, experiences, and more for a Row or Bike workout at Hyatt properties

World of Hyatt members can now earn points for future bookings, upgrades, and experiences by fitting in a Peloton workout while staying at 700+ participating Hyatt hotels.

The two forged a partnership earlier this year, with the hotel brand noting that its booking data revealed travelers are increasingly prioritizing health and well-being amenities when planning vacations.

World of Hyatt members who link their accounts to their Peloton member account can earn 100 bonus points per completed workout on up to ten workouts of at least 20 minutes each month on Peloton equipment at participating Hyatt hotels.

“We have taken feedback from our guests and members that they want to keep their routines while traveling,” Hyatt’s VP of global wellbeing, TJ Abrams, said. “This new collaboration ensures guests can be at their best while on the road by making their wellbeing routines easier and more rewarding.”

The partnership also offers in-room Peloton content, such as stretching routines and bodyweight workouts in select locations.

In addition to sticking to their fitness routines, Word of Hyatt members can enjoy additional perks, including earning 2x bonus points per $1 spent on Peloton equipment and subscriptions, a limited-time discount on Bikes, Row, Tread, and Peloton Guide, and exclusive VIP access to special member events at Peloton’s New York and London studios.

“With Hyatt, we are making it easier and more rewarding than ever for Peloton Members and Hyatt guests to do more of what they love while they travel,” said Greg Hybl, senior vice president and general manager of Peloton for Business. “By integrating Peloton equipment and our world-class content into Hyatt hotels in markets where we operate, together we’re redefining what it means to stay active and motivated on the road, delivering innovative ways to support the wellbeing of guests no matter how they choose to work out.”

Select Hyatt hotels will also offer equipment-free Peloton classes for corporate meetings and conference attendees. World of Hyatt members without an existing Peloton account can create one for free at participating hotels in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Germany, Austria, and Australia.

What’s Next for Peloton in 2025?

In a fireside chat last month at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia & Technology Conference, Peloton CFO Liz Coddington reiterated that the connected fitness giant is focused on delivering profitability and is looking to enhance its content and product offerings about running and walking.

“We’re evolving our marketing to really better associate the Peloton brand with running, walking, and hiking, and that includes focusing on marketing campaigns to drive awareness of Peloton and our Tread product offerings,” Coddington added.

Over the summer, Peloton added a new entertainment option with the integration of Amazon Kindle, so Pelotoners could sink into their favorite books while working up a sweat.

The connected fitness company also recently launched a new app, Strength Plus, which is in beta and focuses on workout programs that cater to a gym setting with audio guidance, expert coaching, and a custom workout generator, where users can share what equipment they have available, areas they’d like to work on and duration preferences.

U.S. Fitness Facility Membership Hits Record 72.9 Million

Gyms hit a historic membership milestone in 2023, reflecting a growing national emphasis on health and wellness, with fitness centers seeing significant increases in both membership and attendance

Membership at U.S. fitness facilities reached an all-time high in 2023, with 72.9 million Americans—equivalent to 23.7% of the population aged six and older—holding memberships, according to the latest data from the Health & Fitness Association (HFA). The findings, published in the 2024 U.S. Health & Fitness Consumer Report, highlight a 5.8% year-over-year membership growth, marking the fastest increase since 2017.

The report, which tracks trends in consumer engagement with fitness facilities, also noted a 9.7% rise in total facility and studio users, reaching 90.7 million, including both members and non-members. Growth was consistent across various types of fitness facilities, including fitness-only gyms, multipurpose centers, and boutique studios.

“Last year’s robust growth underscores the increasing demand for fitness services nationwide,” said HFA President and CEO Liz Clark. “As more Americans recognize the benefits of fitness for both physical and mental health, our industry continues to play a vital role in promoting healthier lifestyles across the country.”

Fitness facility attendance also saw gains for the third consecutive year. The average member visited their facility 81 times in 2023, up from 78 visits in 2022 and 72 visits in 2021. While attendance has steadily increased, it remains below the pre-pandemic average of 119 visits in 2019.

The report offers a comprehensive analysis of fitness consumers in the U.S., with data on membership growth by facility type, demographics, attendance patterns, equipment utilization, and participation in activities such as personal and small group training. The findings are based on a 2023 study conducted by Sports Marketing Surveys USA in collaboration with the Physical Activity Council (PAC), involving 18,000 interviews with a representative sample of individuals aged six and older.

The 2024 U.S. Health & Fitness Consumer Report is available for download, with free access for premium HFA members and discounted pricing for other membership tiers. Non-members can purchase the report for $399.

Earlier this month, the HFA released its  2024 Global Report in which it shared that, in the past year, the U.K., Japan and Spain have enjoyed record membership numbers and penetration rates, underscoring the optimism of the global health and fitness industry.

Polar Monkeys Brainpod

Polar Monkeys Brainpod

This luxury cold plunge is 5.5 feet long, just under two feet tall, and a little over four feet wide with the plumbing and chiller attached. Polar Monkeys designed the Brainpod out of fiberglass, plus it features water as cold as 36 degrees, and as hot as 103 degrees.

Polar Monkeys Brainpod 2.0

Unlike many cold plunge tubs, the Polar Monkeys Brainpod 2.0 can be used outdoors without concern over freezing pipes. Its durable acrylic build also supports its ultra-wide temperature range of 32 to 107 degrees, allowing it to double as a hot tub.

“This tub is incredibly solid, even though it’s relatively lightweight compared to other cold plunges,” BarBend tester Jake Herod says, rating its durability a 5 out of 5. “It held its shape just fine and even the hose and attached pieces felt high quality.”

Polar Monkeys Polar X

Polar Monkeys Polar X

The Polar Monkeys Polar X is easy to use — simply fill it with water, and set your tub to your desired temperature using the chiller. You can also choose between dimensions of 4’ x 2’ x 2’ or 6’ x 2’ x 2′, as well as three different colors.

Whether you are looking to heat up or cool down, the Polar Monkeys Polar X has you covered. Before hopping in (or slowly stepping in), you can easily set the chiller temperature remotely with their app. We also loved that once we were finished, we could save a little energy by securing the insulated cover on top.

Why Choose Polar Monkeys

After suffering from chronic injuries, the founders of Polar Monkeys found relief in cold therapy by using DIY ice baths. Now, they aim to design effective cold plunge tubs to support others with similar challenges. Having used one of their tubs myself, I can attest to the quality.

ProForm Pro R10 Rower (2024): A Free Rower? Yep, If You Really Love iFIT

Asking experienced rowers and rowing newbies to identify the best rowing machines will likely yield different answers. Air rowers or water rowers may best replicate that on-water feel, but “smart” rowers like the ProForm Pro R10 that use magnetic resistance can allow for integration with workout apps like iFIT. Fortunately for the normies among us (hello!), the proliferation of these app-connected rowers has brought virtual studio classes and scenic rows straight to our touchscreens.

The Pro R10’s built-in display is the vessel for iFIT, but as part of ProForm’s Plus program, a three-year subscription will also get you…the rower? Yep — anyone who’s ready to propose to iFIT can technically bring home this rower for free. After strapping in our feet on the Pro R10, we think it’s a good fit for people short on space, short on cash, and who are ready to settle down with iFIT. Take a look through our in-depth ProForm Pro R10 Rower review for all the specifics. Plus, for detailed information on how we test all our equipment, be sure to check out BarBend’s equipment testing methodology page.

ProForm Pro R10

ProForm Pro R10

The ProForm Pro R10 has silent magnetic resistance, and it comes with one month of iFit classes for free. It also features a 10-inch touchscreen display, and has 24 levels of resistance.

Shop ProForm

Main Takeaways

The 10-inch touchscreen display on the Pro R10 streams studio rowing workouts and scenic, trainer-led rows from around the world.

While you can get the machine for “free,” with the ProForm Plus program, you’ll need to commit to (and pay for) a three-year iFIT membership.

Its SpaceSaver design allows you to raise and lock the alloy steel sliding rail in place, cutting its footprint in half.

ProForm Pro R10 Rower Specs

Investing in an at-home rowing machine can be an expensive endeavor, so when a deal like the ProForm Pro R10 falls into your lap, it may be worth a second look. The machine itself is as solid as it comes. A solid build, a solid display, and a solid stroke. But what separates it from other “smart” rowers is what you get for the price.

As part of the ProForm Plus program, you can technically bring home the Pro R10 for…free? Not so fast. “Free” is what you’ll see on the product page, but you’re actually paying for a three-year iFIT membership. You do get to keep the rower forever, but you’ll either need to drop the $1,404 total upfront or commit to paying $39 per month for 36 months.

Now, $39 per month is the actual price for iFIT, whether you have a connected machine like the Pro R10 or not. So anyone who knows they’re ready to commit to three years of iFIT should be seeing dollar signs. During testing, we did feel like the 10-inch touchscreen may seem a bit small at times, but iFIT’s world-class programming might make it a little easier to squint.

When your rowing muscles (aka most of your body) need a break, you’ll also have access to over 17,000 workouts, classes, challenges, and races across disciplines like strength training, yoga, Pilates, and even circuits that will have you hopping on and off your new rower. “iFIT programming is absolutely amazing,” our tester says. “You can choose from endless great workouts with plenty of filter options to find your ideal workouts and programs. The trainers are easy to follow and it also works with an app on your phone for different training styles.”

Unfortunately, at 250 pounds, this machine’s weight capacity is around 50 pounds lower than the 300-pound max we typically recommend, but as another of our testers emphasizes, the Pro R10’s alloy steel build makes for a durable, quiet workhorse. “ProForm’s Silent Magnetic Resistance is exactly what it says it is — silent,” they say. At any point in your endurance or HIIT rowing workout, you can either jump straight to a specific resistance level or cycle through them with just a touch of the plus and minus buttons. The fabric belt also helps out in reducing the noise generated by the machine, which will be welcome news for any napping toddlers or snippy neighbors.

OK, so the ProForm Plus program will help squeeze a rower into my budget — but how will it squeeze into my living room? Glad you asked. Many rowers land somewhere around near the 22-inch width and 86.5-inch length of the Pro R10, but not many utilize its foldable rail design. A quick lift of the steel seat rail lets you reclaim half of its footprint and if you need it to disappear, simply roll it away with the built-in transport wheels. In a word, solid.

Pros

Three years of iFIT included with purchase

24 digital resistance levels

Quiet during use, per our tester
Cons

Below-average weight capacity

Warranty is shorter than most rowers

Display may be too small for some

Who Should Use / Who Shouldn’t Use the ProForm Pro R10 Rower

The ProForm Pro R10’s foldable design lands it squarely among the best compact exercise equipment we’ve tested at BarBend, but that doesn’t mean it’s a fit for everyone. Take a look at who we think might most benefit — and not — from making this rower part of their fitness journey.

Recommended for:

People who know they want to make iFIT the centerpiece of their home fitness routine

Anyone needing to maximize their floor space

Those who want to keep noise to a minimum

Not Recommended for:

Athletes not sold on iFIT’s virtual programming

People on limited budgets who can’t squeeze in another monthly payment

Someone who prefers a massive touchscreen

Our Experience Training With the ProForm Pro R10 Rower

After climbing aboard over 20 different rowing machines, the BarBend team of collegiate rowers, rowing coaches, and certified personal trainers knows what to look for a in a high-quality model. One of our testers, themself a certified personal trainer, traveled to the iFIT headquarters in Utah to get hands-on with the ProForm Pro R10. After putting it to the test, they rated it on a scale of 1 (boo!) to 5 (yay!) across categories like durability, tech capabilities, footprint, and portability. Additionally, many members of our team (including yours truly) have extensive experience using iFIT, the app powering the Pro R10’s virtual workouts.

Foldability

As anyone reading this in a studio apartment or while being climbed upon by small children can attest, it’s hard to find space for at-home fitness equipment. Fortunately for the space-deficient, the best compact rowing machines — like the Pro R10 — find creative ways to maximize your square footage. In this case, ProForm’s SpaceSaver design can reduce its overall footprint by about half.

With rowing machines, the width is not typically overwhelming and at just under two feet wide (plus an extra foot or so on each side for your elbows), the R10’s main space consideration is its 86.5-inch length. When you’re mapping out where yours will take up residence, ask yourself whether dropping a three-seater sofa in that spot is feasible before introducing it to your family or roommates. (1)

But as our tester points out, its foldable design helped it earn a 4 out of 5 for footprint and portability. “Even though it’s pretty long, using the two handles made folding it up quick and painless,” they say. “Also, once it’s folded up, there are clips to lock it in place so you don’t have to worry about it crashing down.” With those two handles — one under the rail and one between the foot pedals — and the relatively light 120-pound weight, the R10 is a good option for anyone tight on space.

Magnetic Resistance

The mechanism powering the resistance on the ProForm Pro R10 resembles many of the best magnetic exercise bikes we’ve tested. Inside the housing is the inertia-enhanced flywheel with a magnet on each side. As you change the 24 resistance levels on the control panel, those magnets move ever so slightly toward or away from the flywheel, which dictates the amount of effort required to spin it.

As BarBend editorial member and former collegiate rower Lauren Keary explains, though, it’s far from the only kind. “There are several types of rowing machines, including water rowers, air rowers, magnetic rowers, and hydraulic rowers, and each type offers a different experience,” she says.

One advantage for magnetic rowers is they are relatively quiet, which could be a boon for those with sleeping babies or ornery neighbors nearby. “The fabric belt on the R10 makes it even quieter than other magnetic rowers I’ve used,” our tester says, rating its adjustability and ergonomics 4 out of 5. “It also pulls really smoothly.” To adjust the resistance, you’ll need to reach for the console. However, the quick-adjust buttons let you jump between the 24 levels in increments of two or cycle through them with the plus and minus buttons.

Tech Capabilities

Where the ProForm Pro R10 shines is the onboard programming provided by its integration with one of the best workout apps we’ve used, iFIT. Its library of over 17,000 total workouts provides a ton of variety, whether you want to hop in a virtual studio class or criss-cross the globe with an on-demand scenic row. There’s a reason it consistently earns scores of 5 out of 5 from our team, especially with iFIT-enabled equipment like the R10.

Let’s say you decide to traverse the English Channel — no big deal. As your row gets tougher, the resistance on your rower automatically adjusts to match your course, leaving you free to focus on the work instead of fiddling with the controls. “I think being able to utilize iFIT on the built-in screen really makes this rower stand out,” our tester says. They also think the 10-inch touchscreen is plenty clear, but might be a bit small, especially at full extension. The R10’s overall tech capabilities earn a 4 out of 5 from our team.

Part of iFIT’s appeal is its cross-training capabilities. When you browse the library, you’ll find classes that might break up your row with an off-machine strength or cardio workout, as well. Just make sure your WiFi capabilities are up to snuff. “You need a trusty Wi-Fi signal if you don’t want to experience lags mid-workout,” says our tester. “But activation is super easy, plus you can use multiple profiles.”

All this quality training does not come cheap, as an iFIT subscription starts at $39 per month. However, the Pro R10 is part of the ProForm Plus program, which offers the machine for “free” when you commit to a three-year membership. That means, if you’re ready to make iFIT your one-stop-shop for home training from yoga and Pilates to strength and, of course, rowing, this could be a great deal. At checkout, you also can opt for 36 monthly payments of $39 or a one-time payment of $1,404.

Construction

The backbone of the best foldable rowing machines and non-folding models alike is the monorail. On the Pro R10, the alloy steel build of both the rail and stabilizers provide a sturdy workout that kept our tester’s fanny gliding smoothly. “The 250-pound weight capacity is actually a bit below average,” they say, rating its durability a solid 3 out of 5. “When I saw that, I wasn’t expecting such a sturdy workout, but I never felt unstable at all.”

One miniature red flag is the length of the warranty. “Most home fitness brands will offer 5 to 10 years for the frame, plus at least a year for parts and labor,” they explain. “So the 5 years of coverage on the R10 is fine, but it’s kind of the bare minimum.” Our team didn’t find any reason to anticipate issues with its construction, but the Pro R10 still earns a 3 out of 5 for its 5-year frame and 1-year parts and labor warranty.

What to Consider Before Buying the ProForm Pro R10 Rower

Although the ProForm Pro R10 folding capability makes it one of the best rowing machines for apartments and small homes, dropping a sofa-sized machine in your living room or home gym requires careful consideration. (1) Before committing to the Pro R10 as your forever rower, our expert reviewers — certified personal trainer Amanda Capritto and former collegiate rower Lauren Keary — suggest taking a few key factors into consideration.

Type of Resistance: “They’re a bit noisy, but air rowers are sturdy and provide adjustable resistance that can emulate the resistance you’d feel on the water,” Keary says. Consider how important the quiet workouts afforded ProForm’s Silent Magnetic Resistance are when you decide which type of rower is best for you.

Weight Capacity: Most rowing machines we’ve tested can support users up to at least 300 pounds, so the 250-pound max capacity on the Pro R10 falls short of industry standards. Before making it your at-home rower, make sure it’s sturdy enough for all the people who plan to use it.

Footprint and Portability: As Capritto explains, think about whether the folding capability of the Pro R10 will enable it to function in your available space. “Size, weight and portability are important, as you’ll need to ensure the machine will fit in your space and it’s relatively easy to move if you won’t be able to leave it stationary,” she says.

Technology: The 10-inch, iFIT-enabled touchscreen on the R10 unlocks virtual rowing workouts, but as Capritto notes, “Smart rowing machines are more expensive and usually require a monthly subscription to access full functionality.”

ProForm Pro R10 Rower Vs. Competitors

Check out our breakdown to get a sense of how the ProForm Pro R10 Rower stacks up against some of the best home gym equipment we’ve tested for bringing rowing workouts to your home.

The NordicTrack RW900 Rower and the Pro R10 share many similarities, namely their magnetic resistance and iFIT-integration. This crown jewel from NordicTrack does, however, best the R10 with a 24-inch smart HD touchscreen, higher weight capacity, and shorter length. But because it lacks folding capability and weighs 38 pounds more, it may not be the best option for those with limited floor space.

The Pro R10 also rings up for $500 cheaper than the RW900, and remember, that $1,404 includes three years of iFIT. That number is actually the exact cost of a three-year membership, so if you purchased the RW900 and three years of iFIT, you’d be spending a grand total of $3,403. Yikes.

Comparing the Pro R10 to the Concept2 RowErg is a bit of a category shift because this air rower uses a fan to generate the resistance you feel. We wanted to line up the Pro R10 with a machine like this to provide a sense of what else is out there and the RowErg is one of the absolute best air rowing machines on the market.

This CrossFit favorite doesn’t offer the touchscreen display and virtual programming of the other two, but that’s because its rugged construction is designed for one purpose: work. Since the user is driving the resistance, this air rower is ideal for interval training and intense workouts instead of gentle virtual glides.

Ordering and Assembling the ProForm Pro R10 Rower

Since the ProForm Pro R10 is part of the ProForm Plus program, you’re essentially paying for a three-year iFIT membership and receiving the rower for free. When you order, you can choose to pay the total $1,404 at once or spread it out over 36 months, which would make your $39 monthly payment equivalent to the typical subscription price.

It’s important to note that, as part of the ProForm Plus program, opting for the 36-month payment option carries a different return policy. “ProForm’s general return policy does not apply to the FREE items promo. You may return your ProForm equipment and cancel your iFIT membership within 30 days of receipt of the product,” the ProForm website reads. “After 30 days, you may cancel your iFIT membership at any time, but your remaining balance will then be due.”

Because our tester, a certified personal trainer, traveled to the iFIT headquarters in Utah to test it out, we didn’t assemble the Pro R10 ourselves. However, their rep explained that it arrives in just a few pieces and takes about one hour to put together.

Places to Buy the ProForm Pro R10 Rower

You can purchase the ProForm Pro R10 at major retailers like Target or Walmart, but to take advantage of the ProForm Plus program, you’ll need to go through proform.com.

Brand Reputation and Customer Reviews

ProForm manufactures some of the best treadmills, rowing machines, ellipticals, and exercise bikes the BarBend team has tested. Along with NordicTrack, many of their cardio machines are integrated with iFIT, which offers top-notch virtual programming.

In our tester’s experience, ProForm’s customer service can be spotty and earns a 3.75 out of 5 overall. “There are several ways to contact ProForm, but it seems like it usually takes up to a week to receive a response,” they say. Customer reviews indicate that, while many people love their equipment, issues reaching the customer care team are consistent.

Warranties

Unfortunately, ProForm’s warranty for the Pro R10 Rower lands right at the minimum for what we typically see from the best cardio machines and garners a 3 out of 5 from our team. While the single year of coverage for parts and labor matches industry standards, the 5-year frame warranty is roughly half of what we like to see on big ticket items like rowing machines.

Final Thoughts on the ProForm Pro R10 Rower

When it comes to mid-range rowing machines, the ProForm Pro R10 offers a lot of value. While much of that value is found in its durability, smooth resistance, and quiet operation, pairing it with an iFIT membership unlocks its potential. Not only will you have virtual rowing workouts pumping through the touchscreen, if you take advantage of ProForm’s unique offer, you can get the rower for free. Sort of.

If you’re already sold on iFIT and are in the market for a rowing machine, you can lock in a three-year membership and essentially get the Pro R10 for no additional cost. You’ll be committed to using iFIT for several years, but there are worse things in life than gaining access to a huge library of at-home workouts. For those who need a quiet, full-body workout experience and are ready to make iFIT the focus of their home fitness routine, you could do a lot worse than the ProForm Pro R10.

ProForm Pro R10 Rower FAQs

Can I use ProForm R10 rower without iFIT?

You can use the ProForm Pro R10 without iFIT, but we don’t think it’s worth it. It’s available at some big box retailers, but if you purchase through proform.com and commit to a three-year iFIT family membership, the smart rower itself is included in the price.

Does the ProForm R10 rower have Bluetooth?

Yes, you can connect any of the best bluetooth earbuds or headphones seamlessly. You’ll also be able to plug in wired headphones to the auxiliary port to isolate the sound during interactive iFIT workouts. This allows you to listen to your iFIT trainer while keeping noise to a minimum.

What is the warranty on the ProForm R10 rower?

When you purchase the ProForm Pro R10 rowing machine, you’ll get a 5-year frame warranty, plus a 1-year parts and labor warranty.
