ProForm Pro R10 Rower (2024): A Free Rower? Yep, If You Really Love iFIT

Asking experienced rowers and rowing newbies to identify the best rowing machines will likely yield different answers. Air rowers or water rowers may best replicate that on-water feel, but “smart” rowers like the ProForm Pro R10 that use magnetic resistance can allow for integration with workout apps like iFIT. Fortunately for the normies among us (hello!), the proliferation of these app-connected rowers has brought virtual studio classes and scenic rows straight to our touchscreens.

The Pro R10’s built-in display is the vessel for iFIT, but as part of ProForm’s Plus program, a three-year subscription will also get you…the rower? Yep — anyone who’s ready to propose to iFIT can technically bring home this rower for free. After strapping in our feet on the Pro R10, we think it’s a good fit for people short on space, short on cash, and who are ready to settle down with iFIT. Take a look through our in-depth ProForm Pro R10 Rower review for all the specifics. Plus, for detailed information on how we test all our equipment, be sure to check out BarBend’s equipment testing methodology page.

The ProForm Pro R10 has silent magnetic resistance, and it comes with one month of iFit classes for free. It also features a 10-inch touchscreen display, and has 24 levels of resistance.

Main Takeaways

The 10-inch touchscreen display on the Pro R10 streams studio rowing workouts and scenic, trainer-led rows from around the world.

While you can get the machine for “free,” with the ProForm Plus program, you’ll need to commit to (and pay for) a three-year iFIT membership.

Its SpaceSaver design allows you to raise and lock the alloy steel sliding rail in place, cutting its footprint in half.

ProForm Pro R10 Rower Specs

Investing in an at-home rowing machine can be an expensive endeavor, so when a deal like the ProForm Pro R10 falls into your lap, it may be worth a second look. The machine itself is as solid as it comes. A solid build, a solid display, and a solid stroke. But what separates it from other “smart” rowers is what you get for the price.

As part of the ProForm Plus program, you can technically bring home the Pro R10 for…free? Not so fast. “Free” is what you’ll see on the product page, but you’re actually paying for a three-year iFIT membership. You do get to keep the rower forever, but you’ll either need to drop the $1,404 total upfront or commit to paying $39 per month for 36 months.

Now, $39 per month is the actual price for iFIT, whether you have a connected machine like the Pro R10 or not. So anyone who knows they’re ready to commit to three years of iFIT should be seeing dollar signs. During testing, we did feel like the 10-inch touchscreen may seem a bit small at times, but iFIT’s world-class programming might make it a little easier to squint.

When your rowing muscles (aka most of your body) need a break, you’ll also have access to over 17,000 workouts, classes, challenges, and races across disciplines like strength training, yoga, Pilates, and even circuits that will have you hopping on and off your new rower. “iFIT programming is absolutely amazing,” our tester says. “You can choose from endless great workouts with plenty of filter options to find your ideal workouts and programs. The trainers are easy to follow and it also works with an app on your phone for different training styles.”

Unfortunately, at 250 pounds, this machine’s weight capacity is around 50 pounds lower than the 300-pound max we typically recommend, but as another of our testers emphasizes, the Pro R10’s alloy steel build makes for a durable, quiet workhorse. “ProForm’s Silent Magnetic Resistance is exactly what it says it is — silent,” they say. At any point in your endurance or HIIT rowing workout, you can either jump straight to a specific resistance level or cycle through them with just a touch of the plus and minus buttons. The fabric belt also helps out in reducing the noise generated by the machine, which will be welcome news for any napping toddlers or snippy neighbors.

OK, so the ProForm Plus program will help squeeze a rower into my budget — but how will it squeeze into my living room? Glad you asked. Many rowers land somewhere around near the 22-inch width and 86.5-inch length of the Pro R10, but not many utilize its foldable rail design. A quick lift of the steel seat rail lets you reclaim half of its footprint and if you need it to disappear, simply roll it away with the built-in transport wheels. In a word, solid.

Pros

Three years of iFIT included with purchase

24 digital resistance levels

Quiet during use, per our tester
Cons

Below-average weight capacity

Warranty is shorter than most rowers

Display may be too small for some

Who Should Use / Who Shouldn’t Use the ProForm Pro R10 Rower

The ProForm Pro R10’s foldable design lands it squarely among the best compact exercise equipment we’ve tested at BarBend, but that doesn’t mean it’s a fit for everyone. Take a look at who we think might most benefit — and not — from making this rower part of their fitness journey.

Recommended for:

People who know they want to make iFIT the centerpiece of their home fitness routine

Anyone needing to maximize their floor space

Those who want to keep noise to a minimum

Not Recommended for:

Athletes not sold on iFIT’s virtual programming

People on limited budgets who can’t squeeze in another monthly payment

Someone who prefers a massive touchscreen

Our Experience Training With the ProForm Pro R10 Rower

After climbing aboard over 20 different rowing machines, the BarBend team of collegiate rowers, rowing coaches, and certified personal trainers knows what to look for a in a high-quality model. One of our testers, themself a certified personal trainer, traveled to the iFIT headquarters in Utah to get hands-on with the ProForm Pro R10. After putting it to the test, they rated it on a scale of 1 (boo!) to 5 (yay!) across categories like durability, tech capabilities, footprint, and portability. Additionally, many members of our team (including yours truly) have extensive experience using iFIT, the app powering the Pro R10’s virtual workouts.

Foldability

As anyone reading this in a studio apartment or while being climbed upon by small children can attest, it’s hard to find space for at-home fitness equipment. Fortunately for the space-deficient, the best compact rowing machines — like the Pro R10 — find creative ways to maximize your square footage. In this case, ProForm’s SpaceSaver design can reduce its overall footprint by about half.

With rowing machines, the width is not typically overwhelming and at just under two feet wide (plus an extra foot or so on each side for your elbows), the R10’s main space consideration is its 86.5-inch length. When you’re mapping out where yours will take up residence, ask yourself whether dropping a three-seater sofa in that spot is feasible before introducing it to your family or roommates. (1)

But as our tester points out, its foldable design helped it earn a 4 out of 5 for footprint and portability. “Even though it’s pretty long, using the two handles made folding it up quick and painless,” they say. “Also, once it’s folded up, there are clips to lock it in place so you don’t have to worry about it crashing down.” With those two handles — one under the rail and one between the foot pedals — and the relatively light 120-pound weight, the R10 is a good option for anyone tight on space.

Magnetic Resistance

The mechanism powering the resistance on the ProForm Pro R10 resembles many of the best magnetic exercise bikes we’ve tested. Inside the housing is the inertia-enhanced flywheel with a magnet on each side. As you change the 24 resistance levels on the control panel, those magnets move ever so slightly toward or away from the flywheel, which dictates the amount of effort required to spin it.

As BarBend editorial member and former collegiate rower Lauren Keary explains, though, it’s far from the only kind. “There are several types of rowing machines, including water rowers, air rowers, magnetic rowers, and hydraulic rowers, and each type offers a different experience,” she says.

One advantage for magnetic rowers is they are relatively quiet, which could be a boon for those with sleeping babies or ornery neighbors nearby. “The fabric belt on the R10 makes it even quieter than other magnetic rowers I’ve used,” our tester says, rating its adjustability and ergonomics 4 out of 5. “It also pulls really smoothly.” To adjust the resistance, you’ll need to reach for the console. However, the quick-adjust buttons let you jump between the 24 levels in increments of two or cycle through them with the plus and minus buttons.

Tech Capabilities

Where the ProForm Pro R10 shines is the onboard programming provided by its integration with one of the best workout apps we’ve used, iFIT. Its library of over 17,000 total workouts provides a ton of variety, whether you want to hop in a virtual studio class or criss-cross the globe with an on-demand scenic row. There’s a reason it consistently earns scores of 5 out of 5 from our team, especially with iFIT-enabled equipment like the R10.

Let’s say you decide to traverse the English Channel — no big deal. As your row gets tougher, the resistance on your rower automatically adjusts to match your course, leaving you free to focus on the work instead of fiddling with the controls. “I think being able to utilize iFIT on the built-in screen really makes this rower stand out,” our tester says. They also think the 10-inch touchscreen is plenty clear, but might be a bit small, especially at full extension. The R10’s overall tech capabilities earn a 4 out of 5 from our team.

Part of iFIT’s appeal is its cross-training capabilities. When you browse the library, you’ll find classes that might break up your row with an off-machine strength or cardio workout, as well. Just make sure your WiFi capabilities are up to snuff. “You need a trusty Wi-Fi signal if you don’t want to experience lags mid-workout,” says our tester. “But activation is super easy, plus you can use multiple profiles.”

All this quality training does not come cheap, as an iFIT subscription starts at $39 per month. However, the Pro R10 is part of the ProForm Plus program, which offers the machine for “free” when you commit to a three-year membership. That means, if you’re ready to make iFIT your one-stop-shop for home training from yoga and Pilates to strength and, of course, rowing, this could be a great deal. At checkout, you also can opt for 36 monthly payments of $39 or a one-time payment of $1,404.

Construction

The backbone of the best foldable rowing machines and non-folding models alike is the monorail. On the Pro R10, the alloy steel build of both the rail and stabilizers provide a sturdy workout that kept our tester’s fanny gliding smoothly. “The 250-pound weight capacity is actually a bit below average,” they say, rating its durability a solid 3 out of 5. “When I saw that, I wasn’t expecting such a sturdy workout, but I never felt unstable at all.”

One miniature red flag is the length of the warranty. “Most home fitness brands will offer 5 to 10 years for the frame, plus at least a year for parts and labor,” they explain. “So the 5 years of coverage on the R10 is fine, but it’s kind of the bare minimum.” Our team didn’t find any reason to anticipate issues with its construction, but the Pro R10 still earns a 3 out of 5 for its 5-year frame and 1-year parts and labor warranty.

What to Consider Before Buying the ProForm Pro R10 Rower

Although the ProForm Pro R10 folding capability makes it one of the best rowing machines for apartments and small homes, dropping a sofa-sized machine in your living room or home gym requires careful consideration. (1) Before committing to the Pro R10 as your forever rower, our expert reviewers — certified personal trainer Amanda Capritto and former collegiate rower Lauren Keary — suggest taking a few key factors into consideration.

Type of Resistance: “They’re a bit noisy, but air rowers are sturdy and provide adjustable resistance that can emulate the resistance you’d feel on the water,” Keary says. Consider how important the quiet workouts afforded ProForm’s Silent Magnetic Resistance are when you decide which type of rower is best for you.

Weight Capacity: Most rowing machines we’ve tested can support users up to at least 300 pounds, so the 250-pound max capacity on the Pro R10 falls short of industry standards. Before making it your at-home rower, make sure it’s sturdy enough for all the people who plan to use it.

Footprint and Portability: As Capritto explains, think about whether the folding capability of the Pro R10 will enable it to function in your available space. “Size, weight and portability are important, as you’ll need to ensure the machine will fit in your space and it’s relatively easy to move if you won’t be able to leave it stationary,” she says.

Technology: The 10-inch, iFIT-enabled touchscreen on the R10 unlocks virtual rowing workouts, but as Capritto notes, “Smart rowing machines are more expensive and usually require a monthly subscription to access full functionality.”

ProForm Pro R10 Rower Vs. Competitors

Check out our breakdown to get a sense of how the ProForm Pro R10 Rower stacks up against some of the best home gym equipment we’ve tested for bringing rowing workouts to your home.

The NordicTrack RW900 Rower and the Pro R10 share many similarities, namely their magnetic resistance and iFIT-integration. This crown jewel from NordicTrack does, however, best the R10 with a 24-inch smart HD touchscreen, higher weight capacity, and shorter length. But because it lacks folding capability and weighs 38 pounds more, it may not be the best option for those with limited floor space.

The Pro R10 also rings up for $500 cheaper than the RW900, and remember, that $1,404 includes three years of iFIT. That number is actually the exact cost of a three-year membership, so if you purchased the RW900 and three years of iFIT, you’d be spending a grand total of $3,403. Yikes.

Comparing the Pro R10 to the Concept2 RowErg is a bit of a category shift because this air rower uses a fan to generate the resistance you feel. We wanted to line up the Pro R10 with a machine like this to provide a sense of what else is out there and the RowErg is one of the absolute best air rowing machines on the market.

This CrossFit favorite doesn’t offer the touchscreen display and virtual programming of the other two, but that’s because its rugged construction is designed for one purpose: work. Since the user is driving the resistance, this air rower is ideal for interval training and intense workouts instead of gentle virtual glides.

Ordering and Assembling the ProForm Pro R10 Rower

Since the ProForm Pro R10 is part of the ProForm Plus program, you’re essentially paying for a three-year iFIT membership and receiving the rower for free. When you order, you can choose to pay the total $1,404 at once or spread it out over 36 months, which would make your $39 monthly payment equivalent to the typical subscription price.

It’s important to note that, as part of the ProForm Plus program, opting for the 36-month payment option carries a different return policy. “ProForm’s general return policy does not apply to the FREE items promo. You may return your ProForm equipment and cancel your iFIT membership within 30 days of receipt of the product,” the ProForm website reads. “After 30 days, you may cancel your iFIT membership at any time, but your remaining balance will then be due.”

Because our tester, a certified personal trainer, traveled to the iFIT headquarters in Utah to test it out, we didn’t assemble the Pro R10 ourselves. However, their rep explained that it arrives in just a few pieces and takes about one hour to put together.

Places to Buy the ProForm Pro R10 Rower

You can purchase the ProForm Pro R10 at major retailers like Target or Walmart, but to take advantage of the ProForm Plus program, you’ll need to go through proform.com.

Brand Reputation and Customer Reviews

ProForm manufactures some of the best treadmills, rowing machines, ellipticals, and exercise bikes the BarBend team has tested. Along with NordicTrack, many of their cardio machines are integrated with iFIT, which offers top-notch virtual programming.

In our tester’s experience, ProForm’s customer service can be spotty and earns a 3.75 out of 5 overall. “There are several ways to contact ProForm, but it seems like it usually takes up to a week to receive a response,” they say. Customer reviews indicate that, while many people love their equipment, issues reaching the customer care team are consistent.

Warranties

Unfortunately, ProForm’s warranty for the Pro R10 Rower lands right at the minimum for what we typically see from the best cardio machines and garners a 3 out of 5 from our team. While the single year of coverage for parts and labor matches industry standards, the 5-year frame warranty is roughly half of what we like to see on big ticket items like rowing machines.

Final Thoughts on the ProForm Pro R10 Rower

When it comes to mid-range rowing machines, the ProForm Pro R10 offers a lot of value. While much of that value is found in its durability, smooth resistance, and quiet operation, pairing it with an iFIT membership unlocks its potential. Not only will you have virtual rowing workouts pumping through the touchscreen, if you take advantage of ProForm’s unique offer, you can get the rower for free. Sort of.

If you’re already sold on iFIT and are in the market for a rowing machine, you can lock in a three-year membership and essentially get the Pro R10 for no additional cost. You’ll be committed to using iFIT for several years, but there are worse things in life than gaining access to a huge library of at-home workouts. For those who need a quiet, full-body workout experience and are ready to make iFIT the focus of their home fitness routine, you could do a lot worse than the ProForm Pro R10.

ProForm Pro R10 Rower FAQs

Can I use ProForm R10 rower without iFIT?

You can use the ProForm Pro R10 without iFIT, but we don’t think it’s worth it. It’s available at some big box retailers, but if you purchase through proform.com and commit to a three-year iFIT family membership, the smart rower itself is included in the price.

Does the ProForm R10 rower have Bluetooth?

Yes, you can connect any of the best bluetooth earbuds or headphones seamlessly. You’ll also be able to plug in wired headphones to the auxiliary port to isolate the sound during interactive iFIT workouts. This allows you to listen to your iFIT trainer while keeping noise to a minimum.

What is the warranty on the ProForm R10 rower?

When you purchase the ProForm Pro R10 rowing machine, you’ll get a 5-year frame warranty, plus a 1-year parts and labor warranty.

Matrix Fitness Teams with Welld Health On Integration

Data exported from Matrix connected fitness equipment will enable clinicians and personal trainers to recommend evidence-based workouts

Commercial fitness leader Matrix Fitness has teamed up with all-in-one wellness solutions provider Welld Health in an integration partnership to validate fitness programs supported by Matrix.

The integration is compatible with Matrix’s Touch, Touch XL, Target Training, and Virtual Training Cycle Consoles. Specialized results from Matrix’s cardio workouts (such as Sprint 8, a 20-minute HIIT program) have begun integrating into Welld’s platform, allowing health professionals to track and report outcomes.

“At Matrix, our technology is designed to meet the diverse needs of our customers,” said Matt McConley, senior digital product manager for Johnson Health Tech/Matrix Fitness. “By exporting data from Matrix-connected equipment, Welld makes it easier for clinicians, personal trainers, and health coaches to add evidence-informed exercise programs like Sprint 8 as part of broader therapeutic strategies. Welld’s robust outcomes data reporting makes it easy to tell your impact story and, in return, earn more clinical referrals.”

Matrix’s integration with Welld broadens the wellness solution’s program offerings to include Sprint 8, which can benefit personal training and corporate wellness programs, weight loss, and diabetes prevention with its complete cardio workout system.

Matrix signed a three-year contract earlier this year with Omnia Partners, a purchasing organization with extensive public and non-profit reach, giving partnership members such as K-12 schools, colleges, local governments, and healthcare institutions easier access to Matrix’s suite of fitness products and connected solutions.

Jocko Greens vs. Athletic Greens — Which Popular Greens Powder Can Earn a Place in Your Diet?

In the ever-expanding world of quick-fix health supplements, it’s easy to find wild claims and dubious research. Although even the best greens powders aren’t a replacement for good old-fashioned fruits and veggies, their impressive vitamin and mineral counts, antioxidants, and adaptogenics may earn a place in your diet. Our experts caution that the research on these supplements is in its infancy, but some studies indicate they could potentially help lower blood pressure, improve heart health, and boost the immune system. (1)(2)(3)(4)

Two of the most recognizable powders on the market  (thanks, social media algorithms) are likely familiar names — Jocko Greens and AG1 (aka Athletic Greens). While it may seem like these popular greens powders are the magic potion for avoiding actual veggies, what exactly do they have to offer? After testing out nearly 40 greens powders, we know what separates the too-good-to-be-true’s from the best-for-you’s. Check out what our team of registered dietitian nutritionists, certified nutrition coaches, and overall health nuts have to say in our head-to-head showdown of Jocko Greens vs. Athletic Greens.

What is Jocko Greens?

Jocko Greens is the greens powder offering from Jocko Fuel, the health and performance supplement company founded by retired U.S. Navy Seal Jocko Willink. Greens powder supplements like Jocko Greens are designed to help supplement important micronutrients that many of us struggle to incorporate into our diets. But with so many vitamins and minerals (and proprietary greens blends of vitamins and minerals), examining the ingredient list of any greens powder can be an exhausting task.

Jocko Greens with a shaker cup

When we had our expert reviewer and registered dietitian nutritionist Chelsea Rae Bourgeois scrutinize the label, she points out that, unlike some others in this crowded market, what you see is what you get. “While I’m usually wary of greens powders, I appreciate that Jocko is transparent with their ingredient blends,” she says. “They include the amount of each ingredient in their blends, giving customers a clear picture of what they’re buying. I also appreciate that it’s free from added sugars.”

One key inclusion in its formula is the handful of adaptogens — ashwagandha, milk thistle, and rhodiola — that caught the eye of certified nutrition coach Jesse Zucker when they checked it out for themself. “These are advertised to increase your energy, and ashwagandha is often taken to promote relaxation,” they say. “Adaptogens are essentially substances that help your body return to homeostasis from what you’re lacking — so if you’re tired, they could help you feel more alert. If stress levels are too high, they may help bring them down.” (5)

A scoop of Jocko Greens with the container

Many greens powders only come in an unflavored — but really, grass-flavored — option, but Jocko Greens offers Pineapple Coconut and Peach. Not only can these tasty flavors make it a bit more palatable, but they use the natural sweeteners cane sugar and monk fruit extract. “I know it’s not everyone’s favorite, but for me, the Peach flavor is pretty good,” says certified nutrition coach and BarBend editorial team member Alex Polish. “I think I’m sensitive to artificial sweeteners (they’re usually way too strong for me), so this one tastes a lot milder than most greens powders for me.”

Read our full Jocko Greens Review.

What is Athletic Greens?

When I said that greens powders labels can be a lengthy read, I was thinking of social media and wellness podcast darling AG1. With over 75 whole food-sourced ingredients, this do-it-all supplement can support a wide range of positive health outcomes, like improved gut health, hormone function, immunity, liver function, increased energy, and more.

Our tester dumps a scoop of AG1 greens powder.

“AG1’s lineup has so many quality ingredients — vitamins, probiotics, minerals, adaptogens — I can’t really see a downside to using it,” says one member of our team, a certified personal trainer. In fact, the combination of ingredients aims to serve as all of the following:

Multivitamin

Multimineral

Stress adaptogens

Prebiotics

Probiotics

Antioxidants

Superfoods

Functional mushrooms

Digestive enzymes

Just as impressive may be what it lacks — artificial flavors, sweeteners, colors, preservatives, and GMOs. AG1 has also been tested by independent labs for impurities like heavy metals, pathogens, mold, and yeasts. Plus, competitive athletes can breathe easier knowing it is NSF Certified for Sport, so it is free of banned substances.

AG1 in the BarBend gym.

“The flavor is a bit subtle, but it is easily the best-tasting greens powder I’ve had,” says another of our testers. Rather than compromise its formulation with artificial sweeteners like sucralose or aspartame, each serving of AG1 contains less than one gram of sugar derived from stevia leaves. “It’s tough to make these powders taste like anything, so using natural sources of pineapple and vanilla is really going the extra mile,” they add.

For our expert reviewer, Chelsea Rae Bourgeois, RDN, AG1’s formula makes it a standout in a crowded market, but she notes that it comes at a steep cost. “AG1 Athletic Greens provide a concentrated source of nutrients, along with beneficial probiotics,” she says. “[It] gets a 3 out of 5 for its formulation, with major deductions for its proprietary blends and cost. For many, the cost doesn’t match the purported benefits.”

Jocko Greens vs. Athletic Greens At a Glance

For a look at the cold, hard facts, check out the key stats for both of these greens powder supplements.

Jocko Greens vs. Athletic Greens: The Nitty Gritty

As two of the more popular greens supplements out there, Jocko Greens and Athletic Greens both have plenty of health benefits to offer. To get a better sense of which might be the best fit for whom, I’ve tapped registered dietitian nutritionist Chelsea Rae Bourgeois and certified nutrition coach Jesse Zucker to dive a little deeper.

Pricing

Most greens powders will run you about $1 to $1.50 per serving. For a bit more context, two others that we like, Transparent Labs Prebiotic Greens and Nested Naturals Super Greens, cost $1.53 and $1.07 per serving, respectively. So right off the bat, both Jocko Greens and AG1 exceed the average price of a greens powder.

Our tester dumping a scoop of AG1.

While both offer a slight discount with a subscription, when stacked up head-to-head, it’s not even close. At $1.66 per serving ($1.50 if you subscribe), Jocko Greens just eclipses the typical range we see among greens powders. On the other hand, as Bourgeois highlights, AG1’s $3.30 per serving ($2.63 with a subscription) pulverizes that average range like a finely-grained, well, greens powder.

“The cost is the biggest turn-off for me with this product,” she says. “AG1 Athletic Greens may help boost your intake of important nutrients, but it definitely comes at a cost — and the cost ain’t cheap! On a budget, I’d be more inclined to add more nutrient-dense whole foods to my diet to obtain the same effects.”

Our tester with a scoop of Jocko Greens

A 30-serving container of Jocko Greens rings up at $49.99, just half the price of the equivalent AG1 pouch. That $100 monthly expense might be the end of the discussion for most, although you can reduce the cost of a single container to $79 ($2.63 per serving) by signing up for a subscription. That 20% price cut bests the 10% you save when subscribing to Jocko Greens ($1.50 per serving), but the bottom line is that Jocko Greens is way more affordable.

The winner: Jocko Greens

Third-Party Testing

Because the FDA doesn’t approve health or performance supplements before they hit the market, seeing some type of independent verification of the formula is vital. The best pre-workout supplements, protein powders, and creatine are often tested for banned substances to give competitive athletes peace of mind, as well.

A likely culprit of AG1’s high price is the amount of testing that batch goes through. It’s tested for nearly 1,000 impurities, like heavy metals, pesticides, and herbicides. Although, it isn’t clear whether this testing is done independently or by AG1. It is, however, stamped with the NSF Certified for Sport seal of approval, which means it’s free of nearly 300 substances that are banned in sports.

Our tester with AG1 in the BarBend gym.

While NSF certification is nothing to sneeze at, AG1 includes several proprietary blends, so we can’t know for sure exactly how much of each ingredient is included within each one. We would have liked to see the formula itself, but seeing that NSF stamp on the label is enough for our testers to score its third-party testing 5 out of 5. For Bourgeois, it also added a bit of reassurance. “Since the research behind greens powders is lacking, I like that this product is third-party tested for safety,” she says.

The Jocko Greens story is a bit murkier. According to the Jocko Fuel website, Jocko Greens has been third-party tested, but as Zucker notes, there is no information on which lab performed the testing or verified those statements. “They say their products and ingredients come from GMP-certified facilities and FDA-licensed manufacturers, which is great,” they say. “They also state that a third-party lab verified each of these ingredients before making their supplements, [but] knowing the lab’s name and the report results would be better since it’s something other companies do. I’ll give it a 3 out of 5 for the facilities used in production.”

The Winner: Athletic Greens

Standout Ingredients

For any of the best supplements for weight loss, building muscle, or overall health that Bourgeois and Zucker examine, the inclusion of proprietary blends is a big deal. Business-wise, we get it. Publishing exact amounts of each ingredient would make it easier for another company to replicate. But for the consumer (the person literally consuming it), proprietary blends make it impossible to know exactly how much of each ingredient is present. In this case, it’s pretty simple. AG1 has them and Jocko Greens doesn’t.

A look at AG1’s supplement facts.

What we can see, however, is pretty impressive in both of these powders. Both contain blends loaded with whole food ingredients, like organic spirulina, wheatgrass, and chlorella. “Spirulina (blue-green algae) is a green superfood that has strong antioxidant properties,” Zucker says. “Wheatgrass is a grass that also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Chlorella is another type of antioxidant-rich algae high in iron.” (6)(7)(8)

Supplement Facts label on a container of Jocko Greens

Another highlight for both is the inclusion of adaptogens, like ashwagandha, milk thistle, and rhodiola. While more research is needed on these ingredients, they are thought to boost energy levels and focus. (5) Both also include digestion-supporting probiotics. “Jocko Greens has 9 billion CFUs of probiotics, which help balance gut bacteria and can boost digestive health,” Zucker notes. ‘They’re a good addition to this product, where you’re ingesting many raw ingredients at once.” (9

AG1’s 7.2 billion CFUs from two strains — Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum — may similarly improve gut health and aid digestion. It also includes prebiotics and digestive enzymes, whereas Jocko Greens only contains probiotics. (10)(11

The winner: It’s a tie.

Nutrition Per Scoop

With so many ingredients in these greens powders, it can be easy to get overwhelmed. First, let’s start with your macronutrients. Here’s a quick per-serving breakdown to help make counting macros easier.

Jocko Greens:

30 calories

6g carbs (1g fiber, 2g sugar)

0.5g fat

2g protein

AG1:

50 calories

6g carbs (2g fiber, <1g sugar)

Fat content not disclosed

2g protein

Beyond those key figures, Bourgeois likes what she sees from AG1, scoring its formulation 3 out of 5. But after factoring in its eye-popping price per serving, she has some reservations. “Unfortunately, AG1 Athletic Greens is packed with proprietary blends, so you don’t really even know what you’re spending your money on,” she notes.

Side label on a container of Jocko Greens

Now, while the amounts of the ingredients in its four blends — Alkaline, Nutrient-Dense, Raw Superfood Complex; Nutrient-Dense Natural Extracts, Herbs, & Antioxidants; Digestive Enzyme & Super Mushroom Complex; Dairy-Free Probiotics — are obscured, the exact amounts of 26 vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients are listed on the label.

On its own, AG1 might well be one of the best multivitamin supplements on the market. In each serving, you’re getting over 100% of your daily recommended value of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, and some B vitamins. The mineral content also includes solid dosages of calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium.

A look inside the AG1 bag.

So, what about the nutrition content for Jocko Greens? That’s exactly what Bourgeois was wondering, too. “Jocko Greens Powder seems pretty standard when it comes to greens powders,” she says. “It includes a few impressive ingredients in small amounts, but the nutrition facts are a little underwhelming. Other than its macronutrients, Jocko Greens Powder only provides the nutrition facts for potassium, sodium, iron, and calcium provided in the product.”

“Each serving provides 18% of the daily value for iron and just 2 to 4% for the remaining nutrients,” she adds, rating its formula 2.5 out of 5. “While the blends in Jocko Greens Powder may include small amounts of foods that you might not typically eat, the nutrition facts do not indicate they’re significantly contributing to your daily nutrient needs. There are many other more cost-effective and enjoyable ways to get these nutrients (and in higher amounts) through whole foods.”

The winner: Athletic Greens

Sweeteners Used

Greens powders aren’t typically regarded as tasty additions to your diet and most only come in the ever-appealing “unflavored” variety. This is the case for AG1, although it does use stevia and the, according to the company, “natural essence of pineapple core and vanilla bean.”

Related: Is Stevia the Most Gut-Healthy Sweetener?

Stevia has been known to leave a strong aftertaste or even cause digestive issues for some people. Jocko Greens, on the other hand, utilizes fermented cane sugar and the natural sweetener monk fruit extract to achieve its two flavors — Pineapple Coconut and Peach.

The winner: It’s a tie.

Available Flavors

While technically AG1 is not flavored, one of our testers definitely picked up on the tropical feel the brand is aiming for. “It doesn’t bother me that there aren’t flavor options for Athletic Greens because the grassiness is pretty mild,” they say. “But I will say, I detect notes of pineapple and vanilla.”

Our tester drinking AG1.

We haven’t had the chance to try out the Pineapple Coconut variety from Jocko Greens, but the Peach was a bit of a lightning rod for two members of our team. “I feel so bad saying this, but the Peach flavor is just not something I can drink all the way through,” one says. “It’s just too overpowering.” However, certified personal trainer and nutrition coach Alex Polish feels differently. “I do get the Peach flavor, which is also unusual (for me, most powders taste generically sweet rather than like whatever they’re advertising),” they say. “So, an impressive 4 out of 5 for me.”

The Winner: Jocko Greens

Taste

First off, greens powders don’t offer the wide-ranging flavors of the best protein powders or creatine supplements. While it might technically be “unflavored,” AG1 earns a 4.5 out of 5 for taste from two members of our team — both certified personal trainers. “With so many unsweetened, unadorned greens powders out there that taste like literal dirt, I like AG1’s pineapple and vanilla notes that border on tropical,” says BarBend tester Nick English. “However, I still get a bit too much of an earthy and grassy taste.”

Our tester scooping a serving of AG1.

“AG1 certainly has a ‘healthy’ taste, but it’s superior to even other flavored powders,” another tester says. “You still need to temper expectations, but there’s a decent amount of sweetness to it thanks to the stevia and natural pineapple and vanilla flavoring.”

The Peach flavor of Jocko Greens earnesa 4 out of 5 from Polish, but another of our testers are not so impressed. “I hate wasting food — or supplements, as it were — but I always have to dump this out halfway through drinking it,” they say, scoring this option just 2 out of 5. “You can tell that they’re trying to mask the earthy, leafy flavors — but it’s way too much overcompensation for me.”

The Winner: Athletic Greens

Solubility

In life and in greens powders, setting expectations is important. Even the best shaker bottles can struggle to completely mix a greens powder, so the fact that both Jocko Greens and AG1 earned scores of 4 out of 5 from our team was noteworthy. We just suggest giving it a shake before each sip.

“The good thing here is that it mixes right up with a shaker, or even by stirring it in a glass,” one tester says of Jocko Greens. “It does settle a bit at the bottom if you leave it out, but a quick shake or stir before each drink should take care of that easily.”

Our tester mixing a shake of Athletic Greens AG1

“This mixes like many other greens powders I’ve tried — pretty well. I use a shaker cup and it just takes a few strong shakes,” Polish adds. “If you’re taking your time drinking it and letting it sit instead of just downing it, I’d recommend giving it an extra shake before each sip”

Our team relayed a similar story for AG1. “It’ll settle if you let it sit for a while, but generally, I drink mine in one sitting so it’s not an issue,” our tester notes. “Be prepared for just a little grit, but you won’t get any clumps with a shaker bottle, and it goes down nice and easy.”

The Winner:  It’s a tie.

Effects

Even after hands-on testing or extended use, it can be difficult to pinpoint the acute effects of supplements like greens superfood powders. With such robust lineups for vitamins and minerals, it’s easy to feel good about beefing up the micronutrient count with a daily greens powder scoop. But as Bourgeois explains, she would like to see a bit more scientific evidence regarding their efficacy.

Related: Micronutrients for Athletes

“There’s a lot of mystery surrounding the hype of greens powders,” she says. “You might be surprised to find that a greens powder only adds more to an already met need. A dietitian can help you decide if a greens powder is necessary.”

After trying both Jocko Greens and AG1, our team hasn’t noticed any immediate side effects. The only note that one tester relayed about Jocko Greens is most likely applicable across many greens powders. “I wouldn’t advise taking this on an empty stomach,” they note. “It’s not bad, but I’ve had a bit of bloating or a stomach ache when I had this and nothing else in my system.”

Our tester showing the AG1 label.

One member of our team who tried Athletic Greens appreciated the positive effect of adding vitamins and minerals to their diet on their mental well-being. “Nothing felt overly negative and nothing felt overly positive,” they say. “That’s standard for this kind of dietary supplement, but it did give me a lot of comfort to know that I’m getting more micronutrients than I otherwise might!”

“There’s no real downside here because it’s packed with all the right stuff — except the price,” another tester adds. “But if you can afford it, it’s a 5 out of 5 from me.”

The Winner: It’s a tie.

Jocko Greens vs. Athletic Greens FAQ

Is Jocko Greens the same as AG1?

Both are gluten-free and share some similarities in their micronutrient content. AG1 includes four proprietary blends while Jocko Greens contains none. AG1 does include prebiotics and digestive enzymes, but its price per serving is roughly double Jocko Greens. But anyone looking for a non-GMO greens powder should go with AG1.

What greens are better than Athletic Greens?

AG1 is our top overall pick among the nearly 40 plant-based greens powders that we have personally tested. Others that rate highly are Transparent Labs Prebiotic Greens and Ora Organic Greens.

Is Jocko Greens third-party tested for contaminants?

Jocko Fuel states that Jocko Greens has been third-party tested, but there are no details about which lab or organization performed the testing.

Do greens powders work?

While our experts caution that these supplements need more research as to their safety and efficacy, some studies suggest that greens powders may potentially support immune function, improve heart health, and aid lowering blood pressure. (1)(2)(3)(4)

And you get a blend of several nutritious protein sources, including pea, pumpkin seed, watermelon seed, and sunflower seed protein,” says Chelsea Rae Bourgeois, registered dietitian and BarBend expert contributor.

This mixture of protein sources covers all of the bases, offering all of the essential amino acids. (1) “A complete protein refers to a protein source that contains all 9 essential amino acids, this is considered superior because you have all the necessary building blocks for muscle growth, repair, and hormone synthesis, as well as other support like to hair, skin and nails,” says Leona West Fox, BarBend expert contributor and Integrative Functional Nutritionist. “This is why it’s important to… purchase a brand that combines them.”

Onnit Plant-Based Protein can give you 21 grams of protein per serving.

There are 20 servings in each container, and each serving costs about $2.25, which is above the average $1.25 to $2 cost per serving we see with many of the best whey protein powders. However, if plant protein is a must to support your plant-based diet or dairy sensitivity, the cost is typical for vegan protein powders, which tend to come in between $2 and $3 per serving.

Our Experience Using Onnit Plant-Based Protein

The BarBend team is filled with athletes, certified personal trainers, nutritionists, and desk jockeys looking to build and maintain muscle while balancing a 9-to-5. We’ve dabbled in greens powders, pre-workouts, protein shakes, and some of the best creatine supplements, all in the search for the best products to support sports nutrition, training, and muscle gain. We put Onnit Plant-Based Protein to the test, adding it to blender bottles and downing the mixture whenever we needed a boost of protein.

To provide you with the clearest understanding of our testing, we’ve rated categories such as solubility, third-party testing, ingredients, and more on a scale of 1 (not good) to 5 (A+). We’ll get into all of the details below.

Ingredients and Formulation

Onnit scored an impressive 4 out of 5 for its formulation with Chelsea Rae Bourgeois, BarBend expert contributor and registered dietitian.Onnit’s Plant-Based Protein features an impressive ingredients list and nutrition profile,” says Bourgeois. “With 21 grams of protein and minimal carbohydrates and fat, it’s a lean option for those on a plant-based diet in need of some extra protein.”

With this amount of protein, 3 grams of carbs, and 1.5 grams of fats, this may be an ideal lean protein powder to support weight loss or body recomposition when paired with resistance training. (2)

However, one area we found worth a callout was the sodium content. “Each scoop of Onnit’s Plant-Based Protein contains 430 milligrams of sodium, which is around 19% of the recommended limit for the average healthy adult,” says Bourgeois. “If you lose a lot of sweat, this might not be a dealbreaker. But it’s definitely worth noting.”

The FDA recommends a limit of sodium intake for adults to be less than 2,300 milligrams per day, though additional studies have suggested that the ideal amount of sodium is 1,500 milligrams per day. (3)(4) What’s more, endurance athletes will want to consume 300 to 600 milligrams of sodium per hour while competing or training. (4)

Our tester mixes Onnit Plant-Based Protein powder in a bottle.

Lastly, leucine, a branched-chain amino acid (BCAA), is an important amino acid for muscle growth. (5) While whey protein powders tend to have between 2 and 3 grams of leucine, a majority of plant-based powders fall much lower than this. (6) Onnit recognized this disparity and added additional leucine into their formulation, providing 2.3 grams per serving.

Taste

“I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t usually like plant-based protein powders,” says our tester. “But this Chocolate flavor was really good. It’s got this familiar chocolate milk type of flavor.” They gave high marks for taste, providing a 4 out of 5 score in this category. This is high praise, seeing as how our list of the best-tasting protein powders is primarily comprised of whey protein powders.

While many of the plant-based protein powders we’ve tried can have a gritty taste and texture, Onnit’s made an effort to mask this grit (often caused by pea protein) with their inclusion of “Smooth Protein” — aka, pumpkin seed protein powder — which helps create a more creamy consistency.

Cocoa powder is the third ingredient listed on the nutrition label, meaning it’s the third most-used ingredient. You won’t find any artificial sweeteners or added sugars, but instead, stevia extract, monk fruit extract, and sea salt are added to boost the flavor profile.

Solubility

Even some of the best vegan protein powders can be a pain to mix, especially in comparison to whey protein options. However, we were surprised at how well Onnit Plant-Based Protein powder dissolved in our blender bottle.

“I added water to a scoop of this powder, shook it a bit in my blender bottle, and while the end result was a little on the thin side, there weren’t any lumps or sediment that dropped to the bottom,” says our tester, who gave solubility a 4 out of 5. However, they did warn that you’ll likely still get a little grit, as that’s often inevitable with plant-based protein powders.

Price Per Serving

If you’re looking for ways to eat healthy on a budget, adding Onnit Plant-Based Protein to your plate may not be ideal. For $44.95, you get a tub with 20 servings, which comes out to a hefty price of $2.25 per serving. If you plan to double scoop or have two shakes a day, you’ll plow through this tub in a little over a week!

This cost is in the higher range of typical protein powders (between $1.25 and $2 per serving on average) and standard for plant-based protein powders (between $2 and $3 per serving). This price per serving scored a 1 out of 5, a large reason why the overall score dropped to 3.9 out of 5.

Third-Party Testing

Onnit provides third-party testing for some of their products, utilizing Informed Sport, one of the most respected third-party testing certifications for dietary supplements. Onnit Plant-Based Protein is verified by Informed Sport, which tests for banned or prohibited substances. Our tester gave this category a perfect 5 out of 5.

What to Consider Before Buying Onnit Plant-Based Protein

After testing almost 150 protein powders, we’ve gleaned a thing or two about what to consider when choosing the right protein powder based on your preferences, needs, and goals. The following are areas to mull over before making your purchase.

Vegan: If you’re following a vegan diet, you’ll want an option such as this that utilizes plant proteins (pea, pumpkin seed, sunflower seed, and watermelon seed protein sources) instead of a whey or casein protein.

Leucine Content: “If a person is taking protein powder specifically to fill any protein gaps in the day and after their workout to maximize protein muscle synthesis then it’s important to choose protein powder with a higher leucine content,” says Leona West Fox, Barbend expert contributor and Integrative Functional Nutritionist. You’ll find 2.3 grams of leucine in each serving of Onnit Plant-Based Protein, which brings you closer to the 3 to 4 grams per meal that studies suggest can prevent muscle loss. (7)

Price: If you don’t really want/need a vegan protein powder, there are less expensive options to consider.

Digestibility: If you struggle with digestion issues or a lactose intolerance, a plant-based protein can be a useful alternative. “On the plant side, pea protein is often referred to as the easiest to digest,” says West.

Protein: Whether you’re looking for the best supplements for muscle growth, or just need help filling in some dietary insufficiencies, consider how much protein you need and whether the 21 grams per serving provided here will support your goals.

Onnit Plant-Based Protein Vs. Competitors

To help you compare from one protein to the next, we’ve rounded up our favorite vegan protein powders so you can see how Onnit stacks up against the competition.

We chose to compare Onnit Plant-Based Protein with Transparent Labs Organic Vegan and Gainful Plant-Based Protein because they’re three of our favorite plant-based protein options.

While much of what makes a protein powder the right protein powder for you depends on preference, Transparent Labs and Gainful may be the right choice if you appreciate organic ingredients. Both of those options feature organic protein sources while Onnit does not. However, for those working with a calorie deficit, Onnit’s 110 calories may be more enticing than the higher range of calories in Transparent Labs and Gainful’s shakes.

Onnit Plant-Based Protein is gluten-, soy-, and dairy-free.

What Gainful offers over both Onnit and Transparent Labs is that it’s unflavored, with the option to add flavor packs to create the flavor of your choosing. However, Gainful is quite a bit more expensive than both Onnit and Transparent Labs, with the cost per serving coming out to a grand $3.21. That’s about a dollar more than Onnit and almost $1.50 more than Transparent Labs.

Our Final Verdict on Onnit Plant-Based Protein

Onnit Plant-Based Protein provides 21 grams of protein, 3 grams of carbohydrates, 1.5 grams of fat, and all 9 essential amino acids. While everybody is different, and some people may like one chocolate-flavored protein shake over another, those who are following a vegan diet or are sensitive or allergic to lactose or dairy can rest easy.

Finding your favorite protein powder may take some trial and error, but we’re here to point you in the right direction of where to start. Whether your journey started with a little Google search about “how to gain muscle,” or you simply want to make the switch from whey to plant-based protein, Onnit Plant-Based Protein should definitely be on your radar.

Plant-based proteins are a great way to hit your protein goals. Plus, swapping in some plant-based options over animal-based options may help reduce cardiovascular disease risk factors and chronic diseases like diabetes, cancers, and heart disease. (8) However, many plant-based proteins are incomplete proteins, so you’ll want to either buy a protein powder with a mixture of protein sources or be sure to consume a diet with a variety of plant-based products.

Is plant protein powder bad for your gut?

You know your body best, so if there’s an ingredient in the plant-based protein powder you’re eyeing that has previously caused you any bloating or cramping, you’ll want to proceed cautiously. This is especially true for those that have IBS or are sensitive to FODMAPs. (9)

Celebrating the 2024 Rogue Invitational Legends Roster

The Rogue Legends event is back for another year at the 2024 Rogue Invitational

The 2024 Legends include 16 of the greatest ever in the sport of CrossFit, featuring five athletes who have been crowned Fittest on Earth

This year’s Legends made a total of 94 appearances at the CrossFit Games, and at least one participated in every CrossFit Games from 2007-2021.

Among the 16 athletes, all but three have stood on the CrossFit Games podium.

During 11 of the first 15 years of the CrossFit Games, at least one of the 2024 Rogue Invitational Legends finished on the podium.

Let’s take a closer look.

Rogue Invitational Legends — Women

Annie Sakamoto

In her only appearance as an individual at the CrossFit Games, Annie Sakamoto, one of the original “Nasty Girls,” finished ninth in 2011.

As a Master’s athlete, Sakamoto has finished on the podium three times, including a first in the 45-49 division in 2021. She is also the namesake of the CrossFit benchmark workout “Annie.”

Kari Pearce

Kari Pearce qualified for the CrossFit Games for seven straight years from 2015 to 2021.

She had five top-10 finishes in those years, including a memorable third-place finish in 2020, thanks to her dominant event win in the final event, “Atalanta.”

Kristan Clever

Kristan Clever was the 2010 Fittest Women on Earth and had a second-place finish in 2011.

She won the inaugural CrossFit Open in 2011 and then became the first athlete to win two CrossFit Opens when she won again the following year.

Kristin Holte

Kristin Holte is an eight-time CrossFit Games athlete and finished in the top 10 five times, including second place in 2019.

Interestingly, these five top-10 finishes were the final five years of her CrossFit Games career.

Holte is still one of the fittest women in the sport, as she has finished 69th overall in this year’s CrossFit Open.

Her 2024 Open performance was the best in the 35-39-year-old division. Today, she leads Kriger Training, which boasts several 2024 Games athletes and teams.

Margaux Alvarez

Margaux Alvarez was a mainstay at the CrossFit Games with seven straight appearances from 2013 to 2019.

Her first six years were as an individual, with a best finish of ninth place.

In 2019, she was a member of Invictus X and ended up seventh on the CrossFit Games leaderboard.

Rebecca Voigt Miller

CrossFit’s “Iron Woman,” Rebecca Voigt Miller, has competed at every CrossFit Games since 2008.

She has 10 individual appearances and six Masters appearances.

Miller had her best year as an individual in 2011 when she finished third. She also had two third-place finishes in the Masters Games in the 35-39-year-old division. In the 40-44 division, she earned second place in 2021 and another third in 2022.

Miller qualified for the 2020 CrossFit Games, but the age group divisions were canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Samantha Briggs

The “Engine from England” was the Fittest Woman on Earth in 2013 and had three other top-five finishes at the CrossFit Games in her nine individual appearances.

Briggs podiumed in her two appearances as a Masters athlete at the CrossFit Games, including a first in the 40-44 division in 2023.

Tanya Wagner

Tanya Wagner only made two appearances at the CrossFit Games but made the most of them.

In her rookie year of 2008, Wagner finished second. The following year, Wagner would become the Fittest Woman on Earth.

Rogue Invitational Legends — Men

Ben Smith

Ben Smith has 11 CrossFit Games appearances, which included four podium finishes. This was highlighted by his Fittest Man on Earth title in 2015.

In 2023, he was a member of the CrossFit Krypton team that finished 19th at the Games.

Currently, Smith is coach to two-time defending Rogue Invitational champion Laura Horvath and the Second Fittest Woman on Earth, Gabriela Migala.

Chris Spealler

Chris Spealler competed in the first seven CrossFit Games and had a career-best finish of third in 2010.

The former Division 1 wrestler entered the Master’s division in 2017, where he earned a third-place finish.

Dan Bailey

Dan Bailey finished in the top 10 in all of his five individual CrossFit Games appearances.

His career-best fourth-place finish happened in his final individual Games appearance in 2015.

Bailey won the first-ever CrossFit Open in 2011.

[Related: Best Weightlifting Shoes]

With a background in collegiate sprinting, Bailey had the iconic catching-his-sunglasses-mid-sprint moment during his win in the 2015 Sprint course.

Josh Bridges

Over his six appearances at the CrossFit Games, Josh Bridges had eight event wins, which places him third in career event wins behind only Mat Fraser and Rich Froning Jr.

In his rookie year in 2011, Bridges was the Second Fittest Man on Earth.

[Related: Best Barbells]

CrossFit fans, new and old, remember Bridges’ celebration after crossing the finish line to win “Push Pull” at the 2014 CrossFit Games.

Josh Everett

Josh Everett competed at the first three CrossFit Games and stood on the podium in both 2007 and 2008.

Everett is still active in the CrossFit community, competing in the CrossFit Open every year.

Matt Chan

Matt Chan was a perennial CrossFit Games athlete in the early years of the sport, competing for six consecutive years from 2008 to 2013.

Chan’s best finish was second place in 2012. He also highlighted his athleticism by winning the NBC’s The Titan Games in 2020.

Mikko Salo

In 2009, Mikko Salo went to Aramos, CA, for his first CrossFit Games and left as the Fittest Man on Earth.

Salo would compete at the Games the following two years.

Before competing at the CrossFit Games, Salo was a professional football player in the Finnish Premier League.

Tommy Hackenbruck

Tommy Hackenbruck has made seven trips to the CrossFit Games, four as an individual and three as part of a team.

In his rookie year in 2009, Hackenbruck finished second behind Mikko Salo and had top-10 finishes in 2010 and 2014.

In 2012 and 2013, he was part of the Fittest Team on Earth, “Hack’s Pack” CrossFit Ute. In his final year of competition in 2015, he was a member of the CrossFit Ute team that finished third at the CrossFit Games.

The Bottom Line

The Rogue Invitational Legends is a fan-favorite event that gives some of the best to ever do it a chance to show that the competitive fire is still there.

Getting a chance to see them compete in a fun environment allows the CrossFit world to reminisce about the great moments of the sport’s history.

Power Plate Technology Boosts Results, Retention & Referrals

Industry veteran Victor Verhage touts Power Plate’s power as a catalyst for revenue generation

At Power Plate® we get asked two questions virtually every day, “What is it?” and, “How does it work?” To put it simply, Power Plate is a vibrating platform on which a user performs simple or complex exercises which are traditionally performed on the ground. Exercising with Power Plate accelerates the benefits and impact of your efforts and leaves you feeling better in a fraction of the time of other exercise modalities. And, dare we say, it’s fun!

According to Scott Hopson, head of Power Plate’s Education & Training Advisory Board, “In life, when we walk, run, jump, exercise we are always moving against gravity and ground reaction forces – these are the foundations of building strength, bone and muscle. Power Plate simply amplifies this natural reaction 25-50 times per second upgrading movements we usually do on the ground, resulting in more muscles, doing more work, more often.”

For fitness clubs worldwide, Power Plate delivers a boost in personal training revenue, an overall enhanced member experience and greater client retention resulting in a positive return on investment (ROI).

Verhage Touts Personal Training Wins

We turned to fitness industry veteran Victor Verhage to get his real-world insights on how a club can turn Power Plate into a personal training revenue generator.

According to Verhage, the introduction of Power Plate gives personal trainers a tool that differentiates both the trainers and the gym itself from competitors.

“In my 15+ years as National Personal Training and Fitness Sales Director for a large chain of fitness clubs, I found Power Plate to be an incredible tool for our personal trainers to engage members,” Verhage shared.

“The Power Plate helped us offer more tailored and engaging training sessions. The platform’s vibration technology allows trainers to offer more customized, efficient and engaging workouts, leading to higher client satisfaction – making personal training sessions more appealing and help us upsell additional packages.”

“For me, Power Plate is a no-brainer,” Verhage continued. “The positive impact on personal training revenue paid for the investment very quickly.”

Creating Stickiness

Client retention has also seen a significant boost. Verhage explained that Power Plate’s ability to deliver measurable results sets it apart.

“Clients experience improved movement, faster recovery, and overall better fitness outcomes, which keep them coming back for more,” he said.

The Power Plate’s on-screen guidance further expands its utility outside of personal training sessions.

“The self-guided functionality allows members to use it on their own,” Verhage explained. “Members with PT packages use it to complement trainer-led sessions, while those who don’t engage in PT still benefit from the Power Plate’s functionality.” This dual-use aspect allows all members to engage with and use Power Plate to increase performance levels.

Attracting New Members & Converting Them

The integration of Power Plate technology not only enhanced the current member experience but has also proven to be a catalyst in attracting new members and increasing conversion rates.

Verhage highlights that Power Plate has become a standout feature during gym tours, impressing prospective members with its unique benefits and making a lasting impression.

“Prospective members see the Power Plate as a tool that can accelerate their progress toward fitness goals,” Verhage noted. “This boosts their confidence in our gym’s ability to deliver tangible results.”

Moreover, Power Plate has proven to be a compelling feature for walk-ins. Personalized demonstrations showcasing its effectiveness create a “wow” factor that often led to quick sign-ups from guests.

credit: Power Plate

“A personalized demo of how quickly it can help guests achieve results leaves a lasting impression,” Verhage said. “This innovative approach has played a key role in improving membership closing rates.”

And further, Power Plate can play a key role in a club’s new member onboarding process, which differentiates the gym from competitors. Verhage explains that, “by introducing the technology during fitness assessments, clubs can provide new members with an innovative and engaging experience right from the start. This strategy elevated the perceived value of membership, ultimately driving higher conversion rates.”

Creating Gym Ambassadors

Verhage points out that members who see better results with Power Plate compared to traditional gym equipment often become advocates for the gym, “driving an increase in word-of-mouth referrals and further cementing the positive ROI of an investment in Power Plate vibration technology.”

“Members share their positive experiences with friends and family, and the uniqueness of Power Plate makes a real impression,” Verhage said. “It’s absolutely led to more referrals, which in turn brings in new members.”

In his experience, Verhage attributes the inclusion of Power Plate in a club’s offering to his success.

“Having the Power Plate in our arsenal positioned our clubs as leaders in fitness innovation,” he said. “It attracted significant attention, not just from new members but also from industry insiders, and this helped grow brand recognition.”

Ultimately, by offering cutting-edge technology like Power Plate, fitness clubs are able to consistently enhance their members’ experience, improve retention, and boost acquisition — making it a win-win for both the gym and its clients.

Redwood Extra-Wide Thermowood Barrel Sauna

Redwood Extra-Wide Thermowood Barrel Sauna

Redwood Outdoors keeps the traditional look of Finnish saunas but adds modern amenities like WiFi capabilities and specially treated materials to resist rot and warping. Bi-level seating and a large seven-foot diameter make this sauna roomy too.

“I’ve been loving my time with it,” says Jake Herod, Barbend expert contributor and certified nutrition coach. “It’s going to heat up to 195 degrees in less than an hour, so if you don’t have a lot of time to sit there and wait around for it, an hour is not that bad.”

This sauna is more versatile than others, as you can use it with both dry and steam heat. Plus, the thermowood is treated with heat so it won’t crack or rot.

Redwood Alaskan Cold Plunge

This cold plunge is a great option for people who want a kit that has everything you need to start plunging. The chiller can drop the water to 37 degrees Fahrenheit and uses a standard outlet plug so you don’t need special wiring. You can even control the settings from your phone and pre-cool your water.

This ice-powered barrel-shaped ice bath, one of the best cold plunges we’ve tried and tested, features a built-in seat so you can relax while your temperature drops. “I really like this seat — it’s deep enough so that pretty much my whole body fits in it,” says Herod.
