Ariel Khadr Wins 2024 Fitness International

The physique round of the 2024 Fitness International featured Tamara Vahn and Jaclyn Baker in the center of the final callout. However, the second round features each athlete’s routine — defending champion Ariel Khadr‘s strength.

The routine round, on the main stage at the Greater Columbus Convention Center on Friday, March 1, 2024, counts for two-thirds of the Fitness competitors’ final scores, so the crown was still up for grabs.

All 12 athletes put on entertaining routines for the live audience in Columbus, OH. The routines made the judges’ job of awarding a winner more challenging, but in the end, Ariel Khadr was crowned the three-time 2024 Fitness International champion.

CrossFit Open Workout 24.1 Livestream Numbers Surpass 2023 Figures

The 2024 CrossFit Open kicked off at 12 p.m. PT/3 p.m. ET on Thursday, February 29, with the announcement of 24.1. The livestream continued to show significant growth in viewership year over year and peaked during Dave Castro’s unveiling of the workout.

One big thing: Both maximum concurrent views (how many people were watching at once) and overall livestream views (after 24 hours) for 24.1 increased from last year. In fact, the total views after 24 hours for 24.1 surpassed the average views for all three announcements from 2023 in their first 24 hours.

[Related: 2024 CrossFit Open Workout 24.1 Released — Get Tips and Strategies From Top Coaches]

The details: The 24.1 announcement recorded a maximum concurrent viewership of 161,127 and a total view count of 872,651 after 24 hours.

How does this compare?

The max concurrent average for the 2023 Open was 120,873, well below what we saw this week with 24.1. We typically see viewership increase each week of the Open, so the next two weeks are expected to provide even higher numbers.

The total views per week average for the 2023 Open was 619,224, while total views (after 24 hours) for 24.1 came in at 872,651, a substantial difference of 253,427 views.

What they’re saying:

“24.1 was a huge success! It was an honor to host the 2024 CrossFit Open!” CrossFit Pleasanton posted on their Instagram account.

The drama is back: No one creates anticipation like Dave Castro.

“Let’s head over to the chalkboard for further explanation,” Castro said after releasing the two movements and the rep scheme of 21-15-9.

“When you look at that, you start to think, ‘What if,’” he asked while scribbling numbers and drawing mushrooms. He continued to add reps to the board, soliciting gasps from the crowd.

Let’s go back further: While the above numbers only include YouTube viewership, our 2020 data includes both YouTube and Facebook. Even so, the average total views after 24 hours for each of the five weeks was 367,857. With well over 800,000 views over the past 24 hours, the 24.1 statistics crush previous years.

The big picture: These numbers show positive growth and continue the upward trend we’ve seen since 2020. We will continue to track viewership through the Open this year.

Strongwoman Lucy Underdown Pulls 666LB (302KG) Elephant Bar Deadlift World Record

Lucy Underdown has knocked down another record. On Friday, Mar. 1, 2024, Underdown made history in Columbus, OH when she set a new all-time women’s Elephant Bar deadlift world record of 302 kilograms, or 665.7 pounds.

The 2023 winner of Europe’s Strongest Woman set the tone during the opening event of the 2024 Arnold Strongwoman Classic with yet another jaw-dropping deadlift record. Check it out:

[Check In: 2024 Arnold Strongman & Strongwoman Classic Leaderboard]

Underdown pulled off this spectacular feat of strength with the help of perhaps the world’s sturdiest lifting straps as well as a weight belt, and was personally congratulated on stage for her achievement by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

While Underknown is known for her prowess in the deadlift — she was the first woman in history to break the 700-pound mark — this was her first time competing at the Strongwoman Classic in Columbus. Based on this performance, it seems unlikely to be her last.

What Is the Elephant Bar Challenge?

The Elephant Bar is a specialty barbell crafted by Rogue Fitness. The Challenge was first unveiled at the ASF back in 2016 as a way for the strongest deadlifters in the world to continue pushing their limits on stage.

The Elephant Bar is longer than a traditional barbell and is intentionally designed to create significant whip, which is advantageous for top-class pullers.

The bar is also loaded with two-inch thick plates, distributing the overall weight further from the center of the bar, which aids the athlete’s leverage.

Unlike during a traditional powerlifting meet, athletes competing on the Elephant Bar are permitted to use lifting straps to aid their grip, given the inordinately heavy weights the bar allows for.

How to Watch the 2024 Arnold Strongwoman Classic

Underdown may be leading the way at the ASF this year, but the 2024 Strongwoman Classic is a two-day event, and there’s plenty more great lifting on the way. The event opened on Mar. 1 and will conclude with the Finals on Saturday, Mar. 2, 2024.

While Underdown is certainly in a good position thanks to her world-record deadlift, she hasn’t secured the $25,000 first-place check just yet. If you want to tune in to the action yourself, you can tune in to the live stream over on the Arnold Sports website and the Rogue Fitness YouTube channel.

Maxime Boudreault Withdraws From the 2024 Arnold Strongman Classic Due to Lat Injury

Another injury plagues the 2024 Arnold Sports Festival. During the opening event of the 2024 Arnold Strongman Classic (ASC) — the Max Elephant Bar DeadliftMaxime Boudreault of Canada suffered a left lat injury on his opening attempt.

Although Boudreault could not perform a deadlift following the initial injury, he did not immediately withdraw from the competition. However, Boudreault did not enter the arena to perform during his slot during the Timber Carry event, and the commentary team confirmed that Boudreault withdrew from the 2024 ASC.

[Related: 2024 Arnold Classic Physique Pre-Judging Report]

Boudreault has dealt with an ongoing series of injuries after bursting to the top of the elite strongman scene at the 2021 World’s Strongest Man (WSM) contest, where he won a bronze medal in his WSM debut.

Boudreault’s return to the competitive strongman scene was recent and highly anticipated. He suffered a broken shin bone that sidelined him from the 2023 ASC and 2023 WSM. He has competed three times since returning to competition: a fourth-place finish at the 2023 North America’s Strongest Man, an eighth-place rank at the 2023 Shaw Classic, and a sixth-place finish at the 2023 Rogue Strongman Invitational.

Boudreault was not the first athlete to withdraw from the competition. Defending Arnold Strongwoman Classic (ASWC) champion Victoria Long withdrew after suffering a hamstring injury during her third Elephant Bar Deadlift attempt.

The 2024 ASC and 2024 ASWC can be viewed for free via the livestream on the Arnold Sports website and the Rogue Fitness YouTube channel.

Victoria Long Suffers Hamstring Injury; Withdraws From the 2024 Arnold Strongwoman Classic

The 2024 World’s Strongwoman Classic (ASWC) kicked off on March 1, 2024, in Columbus, OH, as part of the 2024 Arnold Sports Festival. The defending champion, Victoria Long, touched down in the Buckeye State intending to retain her throne.

However, disaster struck during the opening event — the Max Elephant Bar Deadlift. Long collapsed to the floor on her third attempt with a hamstring injury that threatened her competition.

Right before the second event — the Timber Carry — began, it was announced that Long withdrew from the 2024 ASWC.

[Related: 2024 Arnold Classic Physique Pre-Judging Report]

Long had a dominant performance in her gold-medal-winning 2023 ASWC. She was certainly a favorite to go back-to-back in the static-strength-focused competition.

Long looked strong in her first attempt in the Max Elephant Bar Deadlift event, locking out 261 kilograms. She furthered her leaderboard-leading pursuit on her second attempt of 288 kilograms, which saw a good-lift call from the judge.

Unfortunately, Long’s final attempt of 302 kilograms never reached lockout, and instead, Long dropped to the floor alongside the barbell. Long ranked third in the event, worth 10 points on the overall leaderboard.

Long’s withdrawal from the competition was not officially announced until the commentary team returned to cover the Timber Carry event, which began at 4:10 p.m. EST. With Long out of the competition, a new ASWC champion is guaranteed in Columbus.

Those who wish to tune in can watch the coverage live for free via the livestream on the Arnold Sports website and the Rogue Fitness YouTube channel.

2024 Wellness International Pre-Judging Report

The 2024 Wellness International had more initial buzz than in years past. That is not only because a new champion is guaranteed since 2023 winner Kassandra Gillis opted not to compete, but also because of who was competing. Three-time Wellness Olympia champion Francielle Mattos made her Arnold Classic debut, and many experts considered her the favorite to win the show.

However, 2022 Arnold champion Isabelle Pereira Nunes was in the show and sought to upset Mattos for her second Wellness International win. Those two and the rest of the lineup were ready to take the Arnold Expo Stage in the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, OH, on Friday, March 1, 2024, for the pre-judging round.
